LUKAS NELSON AND THE PROMISE OF THE REAL live at THE OLD FRUITMARKET, GLASGOW 20th June 2023 Starting a music career as the child of a famous musician has proved to be a difficult path for some who have fought the constant comparisons to the parent and accusations about coat tail riding while trying to carve out their own niche. Lukas Nelson, son of legend Willie Nelson, must have to deal with these same issues, but is already creating his own music with a natural grace. He certainly has everything going for him: talent, good looks with a winning smile, a strong work ethic on top of an amazing pedigree. He grew up traveling the country on his father’s tour bus the Honey Suckle Rose while being exposed to legendary musicians giving him the best music education one could hope for. Nelson’s music is soulful rock with influences like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix and certainly from his father and famous friends. Nelson ventured on stage tonight in The Old Fruitmarket and launched into ‘Sticks And Stones’, the title track from their upcoming album. It’s a rollicking, twangy number with a big sing-a-long chorus and the bluesy touches that are now a staple of their live performances, really started the evening off on a high. They followed that with ‘Every Time He Drinks He Thinks Of Her’, a song Lukas previously covered with his dad Willie Nelson, which gave him the first chance of the night to show off his incredible vocal belt. Ahead of the release of the new album, the band took the opportunity to play a few tracks from it. ‘More Than Friends’, the group’s track with Lainey Wilson which has just topped the Americana chart in the US, was an early standout with its slinky bass-line and playful tone, whilst ‘Ladder Of Love’ - which Lukas described as a “real country song” - rattled along at breakneck pace and current single ‘Alcohallelujah’ had a swampy feel about it and a soaring, anthemic chorus that disguised its bittersweet lyrics. Lukas plays so effortlessly and manages to make the big hall in Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket feel like the most intimate of spaces. There is something about the blues that stirs the depths of your soul and tonight Nelson was setting us all on fire. Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real were a great treat for me tonight in Glasgow as I’ve been following the band for a good few years and they delivered up to my high expectations. This is a band chock full of amazingly talented musicians who go all the way with Lukas. If you get the chance to see them then take it as I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
