Makes perfect sense now “the interaction of two rhythms”. Can’t wait to start trying this out
I find sometimes I write to a beat but hear another beat and the verse sits on that beat better and I get really confused. like I made a diss track and wrote it to "swizZz cheese" by P-MC and I rapped it to takeover by Jay and it sounded better.
That's very true. I got a buddy who likes to write lyrics before he hears the beat and I try telling him his flow is off beat.. it doesn't work.! But he just doesn't get it. God damn boy.!
turkey thug0420 I been rappin about 15 years, the majority of this locked up with no beat. I have epic songs that I’m having a hard time staying on rhythm. *bleh*
Writing to beats is good for making a track, but if you want to write acapella(you don't yet have a beat or something) then you should count the syllables and get a consistent rate of syllables in your bars on every verse, works every time but is very time consuming vs. making it straight to a beat, which is faster than trying to morph your bars to all hit f. ex. 8 syllables.
I literally can’t freestyle. whenever I’ve tried my brain has alway’s shut down completely due to the fact that what I’m sayin either make’s no sense, or my rhyme’s are nursery book. I start out good, then my brain freeze’s, and I can’t even think of simple rhyme’s anymore once it freeze’s... I also have horrible ADD which cause’s me to only be able to focus on one thing at a time, and take month’s at a time just to write a 16 bar acapella verse to a beat in my head, so I’m not able to even think of anything to write while listenin to a beat. whenever I listen to a beat that’s literally all I’m able to do is listen to a beat. I’ve tried scattin to beat’s as well in order to form rhythm’s, and flow’s only to repeatedly have my tongue naturally, and unintentionally slow down, and/or quickly become tied which in turn cause’s me to become mushed mouth, and quickly lose what little bit of rhythm, and flow I had established previously. I have never been able to scat slower 90’s boom bap type rhythm’s, and flow’s to beat’s either due to the fact that slower 90’s boom bap type rhythm’s, and flow’s seem more like talkin w rhyme’s to a beat than they do rhythm’s, and flow’s to me. there have been a handful of time’s where I’ve either been able to write a verse, or verse’s to a specific beat, or beat’s w out listenin to the beat, or beat’s, and have them be completely on point rhythm, and beat wise, or damn near completely on point, and I think that’s what in turn has caused my way of one track mindedness, and stubborn thinkin as far as writin w out a beat playin. when I 1st started recordin a little over a year, and a half ago I hit the ground runnin, and released a song once every month, or so... which for me is extremely productive, but it’s been almost a year since I’ve dropped anything at all music wise, and I feel as if I’ve lost some of the skill, and drive that I had previously acquired in the beginnin from stayin, by my standard’s, some what consistent. I’ve tried to give up doin music more time’s than I can count, and for a few day’s to a week at the most I’ve been able to do so, but my brain all the sudden begin’s to alway’s wanna start puttin word’s, and phrase’s together outta nowhere for no reason, then come up w rhyme’s for those word’s, and phrase’s, and before I know it I’m back writin down rhyme’s which turn into lyric’s, and ultimately verse’s. it’s honestly extremely debilitatin. I’m stuck in between a rock, and a hard place, and need to find some way to either be more productive if I’m to continue w tryna do music, or quit tryna do music all together for good. please help... Plz understand that a freestyle is a WRITTEN and rehearsed verse. It doesn't have any parameters, so how and what you write is free of set or particular style. When you rap spontaneously(no pen) or at will, this is called off the head or off the dome. You don't have to think hard. You just say what comes to you. Rapping off the dome helps to get your skill set up. Writing freestyles helps helps to get your memory exercised and helps build you up for songwriting
I used to not rap with a beat and because of that i didnt have flow so when id rap my stuff on a beat id be so off beat then i started rappin to a beat and it helped alot so thanks
Thank so much for this tip Drew!I remember when I was in your group I got a lot of useful and helpful tips but I couldn't figure out why I am sounding wack but now I actually get that it might be because of the fact I never write to the beat.Gonna try to do how you advice,Thank you homie!Big up for you:)
Hey Drew, I'm 16 and I've been rapping since 3rd grade. I spend some of my freetime freestyling, making beats on GarageBand, and writing down some lyrics. My goal is to be heard by my peers. Tips?
Hey Drew, what's your take on rappers like Biggie, Jay-Z and Lil Wayne, who comes up with lyrics spontaneously in their songs instead of writing them down?
What if you make the song then make it flow with the beat by the way you say it or make a instrumental yourself after the lyrics and you see if what way you feel the lyrics match up the best
Where do you find beats if your just starting out? Most of them you need to pay for, but what are some good websites or TH-cam channels that have beats you can use?
