One of the most important & timely documentaries of late. Mr. Reich is an American hero & patriot. He shines a light on the inner workings of a complex & diverse economy & how those at the top of said economy seek to manipulate political & financial institutions in an attempt to accrue an even bigger share of America's economic pie. A must-see for all freethinkers.

juicyappleish Everything is wrong with it 2 a fucking idiot. What wealth the government hasn't stifled the people from creating has been destroyed under the pretense of taking care of everyone. Idiots like Reich have no idea where wages and prices come from. Who cares if by BLS statistics in 2012 on 1.6 million people made exactly the minimum wage? This movie was presented in my Community College. This film is a fantastic piece of work. A great non-biased, fact rich film that shows what really went on 60 years ago to today! It was cool to see his facts matching up to what my Econ class has been studying!
Everything this guy mentioned in this documentary seemed like common sense yet the sadly, nothing will likely to change. 0.1% that is running the show would not allow it.
O'Reilly is misconstruing USSR, the cold war, and Fascism with marxism and communism. IN part because we have called it communism for decades, but it was never actually communism- it was fascism. So some ideas ARE communist or socialist- that doesn't mean they are bad ideas or will lead to fascism.
James Gant Agreed. If said about my idealism it would be a combination of liberalism and 'Orwellism'. Stalin and Mao were neither. Funny now Communism is not big boogie man any more but Islam: "The war is not meant to be won, it is meant to be continuous. Hierarchical society is only possible on the basis of poverty and ignorance. This new version is the past and no different past can ever have existed. In principle the war effort is always planned to keep society on the brink of starvation. The war is waged by the ruling group against its own subjects and its object is not the victory over either Eurasia or East Asia, but to keep the very structure of society intact." George Orwell.
I have worked all my life, and over the last 20 years I have lost my paid holidays, paid vacations, and a lot of my benefits. Those were all taken from me during recessions - so the company could "stay competitive". When the media told me the economy was recovering, I never got my paid time off back (but the CEO and his cronies all got huge bonuses - on top of their large salaries). I am tired of doing more for less. I am tired of the American middle class being eroded into poverty. When are the working people going to start regaining what they've lost?
Love Robert Reich. Finally somebody who can explain progressive economics clearly and simply to the mass public. Conservative political economic policies or destructive.
so cool thx for telling ppl about that. people in north america dont know how bad they have it. we work long hours, have no vacation, high student debt, america locks up sooo many ppl in private prisons, no high speed trains, no protests or strikes.
I'd like a few spoilers: does Reich have a practical fix for the problem? I like pie charts, graphs, and comparisons as much as the next person. It bothers me, though, how the graph of inequality we see at 0:39 shows things getting worse during the years Reich was in a position to make a difference. The time to act is always "now". I'm a fan of his but how does he account for what he did "then," while in D.C. during the Carter and Clinton years? I guess I'm asking: will this film tell me what can be done by tiny little citizens like me?
I saw a sneak preview if this film Thursday night, and it was GREAT. This film, along with "Capitalism: A Love Story", absolutely must be seen by as many Americans as possible, in order for us to remove the blinders, and intelligently form solutions for our economic nightmare.
I highly recommend seeing 'Park Avenue' it's a documentary about this very subject. It opened my eyes. I think it's free here on TH-cam, I saw it on Netflix streaming.
I will be writing a review on the movie Inequality for All. The movie stars Robert Reich, former secretary of labor for the Clinton administration. He goes deeply into the causation of the income inequality gap in America. He explains each factor in great detail, without any bias input, considering the man is worth way more than any of the labor workers he is fighting for. He believes the greed of filthy rich CEO’s, unfair tax policies for the wealthy, excessive use of technological advances, and etc. need to change in order to help the 99% of the U.S. population which is average working Americans. If there isn’t a change, then the economy will suffer and the middle class as we know it will become extinct. This film had a Michael Moore feel to it, even though it was not a major democratic point of view, it still expressed concern for the United States and the average working Joe’s like a Michael Moore film might do. It was an eye opening movie and helped me become more aware of what is happening in the workforce as of late.
The problem of income inequalities is that while companies continue to profit, the workers are getting paid less and less in proportion. Once many jobs in the manufacturing sector are now subcontracted out to smaller companies, through employment agencies and other countries where workers are unable to unionize. Walk into a typical department store and you'll see how much stuff actually carry the label "Made in USA"...
On the other hand, if you give businesses tax breaks, corporations would distribute the money to shareholders. Other companies would give bigger bonuses to their bosses and execs. Otherwise you wouldn't have Walmart subcontracting manufacturers to ship Chinese made stuff to the US no matter which party (left or right) gets into power. Apple generates huge profits so why do you think all the iPhones are made in China? Not everybody is a Henry Ford. Back in the 1930s Ford paid his workers $12/h for making the Model-T instead of distributing his profits to his shareholders. At least Ford cared for his workers. Some corporations just don't give a d... about their workers.
@@shk00design Unless you can raise the wages in China/Asia/Central America, this problem is not going away. People in the USA want middle class lifestyles doing manufacturing work but that same work can be done in those countries for 1/10th the wage. This is the real dirty secret and it cannot be solved really. It doens't help that Democratic policies, meant to help the middle class, only end up hurting them even more by putting costly burdens on corporations.
He reiterated a fact that I found compelling. From the 1970s up to the Great Recession (2007), Americans have coped with declining real wages by greater worker participation, i.e., women entering; then, they increased their work hours; then, they took on debt because they felt a wealth effect from rising real estate prices. It is no wonder that when the real estate bubble burst that the 99%ers and Tea Party rose up. I find the latter scary because austerity, as Reich said is not the answer.
You have it exactly backwards. It was a lack of government "meddling" - i.e. regulation - that caused the 2008 financial collapse. Also you appear to be confused as to the definition of neoliberal, which means the opposite of what you are stating. Neoliberalism is actually associated with laissez-faire capitalism.
> It's not easy to be a millionaire. You sound like not only are you saying that anyone can be a millionaire, but that everyone can be a millionaire. One interesting stat: A majority of millionaires are the first in their family to have that amount of money (but it only lasts 2 generations, tops).
Watched this and was most disappointed. The whole documentary felt like it was Robert Reich (who seems like a nice guy) showing off his achievements in life. It was a case of "Look who I knew", "Look where I worked", "Look what TV shows I was on" etc ...
Sorry that you feel that way. Unfortunately our society greatly depends upon credentialism. This is likely targeted to an audience that is not very familiar with this topic, or his name, so to establish a since of trust, he needed to show that he has experience. If you look past that, the information given is incredibly important.
***** I understood it, and I agree with what was said. Too much of the documentary was about Robert Reich though, and not the title subject. Judging people on their user names says a lot about you though!
That's quite a statement considering the rising cost of getting a college education. Many people get into debt by tens of thousands of dollars, and if they struggle at some point to make payments (as in the recession, remember?) and default, the sum owed balloons to twice the amount. Even if they are able to continue to make payments, it affects quality of life. But if they don't get a college education, they find more and more the most basic of jobs require a college degree. You are very naive.
Are you trying to say that the parents of the rich kid and the parents of the poor kid did not get a free education from K-12th? The government's job is to set conditions for people to have "a chance" in life. K-12 is the fairest that it can get. Are you suggesting government should pay from college freshman-senior? If I have student loan debt, then it's my fault for not working while going to college. It's great that a person works hard at college, but don't blame others who also work.
I disagree. Most of the rich kids I know sit on their ass and inherit their parents money. There is a growing class system in America. Kids who work hard and get into a good school are more often then not crippled with student loans. University costs more than it ever did. Not to mention that internships seldom lead to careers nowadays.
people think that the rich take advantage of there money but not all of them do....every Christmas my family and i donate over 10 thousand dollars towards kids in Africa in need. so no we are not all taking advantage of our money
No, you don't have to apologize. I'm not offended by an idiot who has a master degree and still can't make a decent living with his life. There are many underprivileged people who made it in life. There are people who don't complain. There are people who've been dealt with a bad hand and never bitch about inequality. By the way, I'm not white. I don't have to be white or support republican to be rich or successful. I voted for Obama. I worked for a living. I am the 1% of the 99%.
I agree, more talk no change bla fricken bla and in the meantime he's another one getting richer /: My husband and I just watched a documentary last night called "The inside job"
This is INTENTIONAL. How best to hedge your power and wealth than to kick the economic mobility ladder out from under you once you're there? Less competition. Outsourcing US labor to slave-wage countries with low standard of living is dooming US to a low standard of living. I *like* living in a developed country and taxes pay for it. Want low taxes people? Go to Somalia.
Actually not. There was no slavery when the industrial economy of the North boomed while the agricultural South which had few factories had it feudalistic society connected to slave labor. Later after the Civil war there was no slavery at all and the economy was booming quickly outscoring the Great powers of Europe on all kinds of output. As for corporations - they need fair competition and not corporate welfare and government caretaking. No more special privileges, no more corporatism!
It's funny watching the students in the documentary. He totally mind fucked them, I remember this one chick who was staring at him like a zombie she was so concentrated and reeled in on what he had to say. Oh if only all of Americans could see it.
Most people would say the Swiss system is better. The problem is that the few people who prefer the USA system are in a position to keep it the way it is.
Because we know that MSNBC, CNN, ABC etc. are totally based in reality. Kevin, the fact that you brought up FOX tells me you yourself learn in sound bites. I'm an ex-liberal so I can read you like an open book.
It seems that a lot of people want that someone else would give them a job, a paycheck, a house, income, retirement. No one wants to work. They don't want to take their own bullet. Why don't they start their own company like most of the so claimed 1%. And all that bullshit about working hard for 70 hours a week is just stupid. The most CEO's of big companies work for 80-100 hours a week. No weekends, no holidays. Because in that situation even if you get hit by a car, you don't die. Man up. Nobody cares about you and nobody should. Everyone is pursuing his own interest including you. That is the human nature.
If someone made $100 billion because he sold products that people WILLINGLY purchased, what's wrong about that? If someone started a multinational company creating innovative products, that person totally deserves to become insanely rich.
***** If you say that it is not a problem to gain wealth by providing goods and services then you should understand that a deal (which is good for both sides) has to be made between two parties. If a deal does not satisfy one party they decline that deal. So explain me now how come "the rich" underpay their staff if they themselves decided that it was a good deal to exchange their work for that amount of money (their salary)? If you think that the pay is too small you should leave your job and then the employer will have to find someone new or increase the pay for that position. And about taxes: the share of their income that they pay is bigger both in percentage amount and actual amount. So they already pay more than most of the people but somehow it is never enough for them. Tell me who is greedy in this situation? The guy who runs his company providing goods or services thus creating new jobs for people or those who basically do nothing to create new opportunities or growth of economy? They just sit and shout how those who actually build the economy have to pay more so that he (being too lazy or stupid) could get more without actually doing more. I ask you again: who is greedy?
***** If you look at smart business owners, you will see that the profit doesn't just get dumped into their pockets. The successful businessmen put the majority of their profits back into the company! Sure, some of the cash goes into their pockets but the rest goes directly into funding more jobs. If they paid more to the workers you would expand the very gap that is being discussed in the film! If instead of hiring 10% more employees, a company simply increased the existing employees' salaries by 10% those 10% of potential new employees would have ZERO income. Thus affecting the wage gap more than paying the workers more.
Martynas misses the point. How many CEOs actually started their own company and are entrepreneurs? The great majority didn't start anything. Human nature = law of the jungle. What we recognising is the need for a civil society. You sound like Marie Antoinette "let them eat cake".
Haha over regulation caused the mortgage collapse? Banking is the only industry where consequences of mistakes don't happen until years after the mistakes are made and these consequences in too big to fail banks affect everyone, it is precisely why a degree of regulation is required.
Nah, unfortunately, not everyone can be a millionaire. It has more to do with one's mentality than the "1%-ers vs 99%-ers" ploy. Most people don't want that. They think they do, but, deep down, they don't. If they did, they would be willing to put in the blood, sweat, and tears. Whether it's sacrifice, self-control, will power, or whatever. There's plenty of rhetoric to go around, but that's really what it comes down to. If someone wants something bad enough, they'll find a way to get it...
I dunno...Maybe he does actually care? Or maybe he is strictly trying to make some cash off of his name recognition, and from his lectures and books by choosing a socially relevant topic? Just can never know these days.
Sorry, the if someone wants something bad enough argument is nonsense. If the slaves wanted freedom enough there would not have been slavery - just a BS way to blame the victim for their own oppression.
Scotty ... '' What after WW2 we prospered? Hmmm..maybe because we werent handing out money to blacks and hispanics '' You say "maybe", but you got nothing to prove that. You make no supporting factual statements or arguments, you merely raise the supposition. Reich's movie does prove the opposite, that as minorities have entered the work force and gained spending capacity - the economy grows.
Hey, I grew up "rich" and was bullied for it my whole life. I am also (partially) disabled. Think before you judge. How quickly this conversation has devolved into hating "rick kids" and "white" people. I think America's economic situation is a nightmare too, but please consider how the 1965 immigration act has flooded the labor market with cheap immigrant labor, both legal and illegal, outsourcing has decimated jobs, and single parent homes, more common among Blacks and Latinos, fuels poverty.
You don't have to bring race into it. I can tell from your comment that you don't go to school. If blaming the success of others for your failure helps you sleep at night, then please continue to do so.

But didn't Reich back NAFTA during the Clinton administration?! That hurt a lot of American workers. I am glad he change his tune.
Cogently stated, slavery, it appears, has flourished since it was "officially" abolished. Economic slavery/wage stagnation for all!
Do you agree that the slaves, that you refer to, are free?
No more special privileges, no more corporatism!
i believe in inequality for all yea because everyone does not look the same to and not live voice too vision too
It's funny watching the students in the documentary.
Isn’t this what President Trump is doing, by boosting the economy, trade and creating record jobs?
The unions
So small!
High immigration rates contribute to income inequality
And where are most these located? You do know these rich kids make up less than 1% of the American populace.
Haha over regulation caused the mortgage collapse? Banking is the only industry where consequences of mistakes don't happen until years after the mistakes are made and these consequences in too big to fail banks affect everyone, it is precisely why a degree of regulation is required.
such an american trailer, it's a shame, it foreshadows a probably ok doc
Where would you get the money to give to the middle class? Is this the russian Lenin? I am poor, where can I get the extra income?
Nah, unfortunately, not everyone can be a millionaire. It has more to do with one's mentality than the "1%-ers vs 99%-ers" ploy. Most people don't want that. They think they do, but, deep down, they don't. If they did, they would be willing to put in the blood, sweat, and tears. Whether it's sacrifice, self-control, will power, or whatever.
There's plenty of rhetoric to go around, but that's really what it comes down to.
If someone wants something bad enough, they'll find a way to get it...
Looks like he's really sticking up for the little guy ...pffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffft.
I dunno...Maybe he does actually care? Or maybe he is strictly trying to make some cash off of his name recognition, and from his lectures and books by choosing a socially relevant topic? Just can never know these days.
+Mike Echon I dont think so. Looks like you missed the point of the movie
Lol
Sorry, the if someone wants something bad enough argument is nonsense. If the slaves wanted freedom enough there would not have been slavery - just a BS way to blame the victim for their own oppression.
Scotty ... '' What after WW2 we prospered? Hmmm..maybe because we werent handing out money to blacks and hispanics ''
You say "maybe", but you got nothing to prove that.
This movie shows the whole world how Trump got elected
Watch "The House I Live In" Might open your eyes some.
search............The Decline And Fall Of The Human Race. a book by M.C. MacDonald.
Thanks, but we give more than our share. Not get your liberal hands out of our pocket.
JUST TAKE THE RICH PEOPLE'S MONEY AND EVERYTHING WILL BE PERFECT: THE MOVIE!
Uh, no. Protect the middle class and make them stronger, and it will in return help everyone and the economy, THAT's the message of the movie.
You don't have to bring race into it. I can tell from your comment that you don't go to school.
If blaming the success of others for your failure helps you sleep at night, then please continue to do so.
An ex-liberal. Hmm. Someone who forgot how to read?
Bigger offffgfgfff
they took our jerbs!
