Chopper used to shop at our store in Nth Fitzroy, as a joke, he comes in one day and says to the new Indian guy " A wheres that 50 bucks you owe me?'' The Indian was all Nah Nah Nah IIIII don't owe you Nah Nah Nah after that the Indian guy didn't want to serve any Aussie guys.

the TV series 'UNDERBELLY' ......was KIND of our The Wire. Each season peels back a generation of REAL Notorious Underworld Figures in Australia. With dramatised factual accounts of events from police reprots & those who were involved.
S1 deals with Carl Williams & the Melbourne Gangland Druglord War that raged for years, S2 is in the 70s and 80s and the prominant figures who were big in drug running and basically BUILT the drug black market in this country. Chopper is portrayed in s2 or 3 i think.
There is 6 or 7 season from memeory and each season covers a different figure and story. again all real figures and real accounts just dramatised but it is probably the most famous and well known big budget crime series this country ever produced.
The first series is based on the Book Leadbelly: The story of the Australian Criminal Underworld

S1 The Melbourne Gangland Killings in which 36 prominant Criminal Underworld figures were killed.

Sequel Series: The series Fat Tony & Co. Based on Tony Mokbel, the series covered the manhunt for Mokbel that lasted 18 months and dismantled a drug empire.
Fat Tony and Co actually runs chronologically alongside of Underbelly, with the storyline being told from the point of view of Mokbel. The first few episodes chronicle his rise while the "Melbourne gangland war" is taking place but the later episodes focus on his disappearance and arrest in Greece, and other events that unfolded after the original series of Underbelly concluded.
Worth a watch if you're curious about our countries criminal history and why figures like Reid are so reverred.

There's a few different series of a show called "Underbelly" which explains a lot of different underworld / gangland figures. The only other 2 i can really think of that are as famous are Ivan Milat (Serial killer of Backpackers up in NSW back in the 1990's) and Ned Kelly back in the 1800's. Ned Kelly is the most famous of all as he was in shoot outs with the police and made armour out of parts of a plough. There's a good story about a crooked cop called Roger Rogerson. He was killing all sorts of people.

You need to watch the underbelly series, carl williams , he knew chopper but was way more deadly, he started a gangland war in Melbourne and the murders did not stop, the series is brilliant and true.. it will give you crazy insight into how aussie crims work... theres afew different underbelly series and there all about different gang wars in Australia.. but the carl williams one is the one to start with
