So if you can use light to manipulate the world around you and you can theoretically make you're own techniques could I make a SunToaster titan? So could my titan summon a flaming toaster and shoot overly burnt toast at people?
Perhaps the guardian who developed these new light techniques could simply be us. We are very powerful, experienced and skillful guardians in our own right having slain gods and have been using the light for some time.
From a lore point of view you could make the assumption the that perhaps we need to move to more aggressive uses of light as opposed to, for example, the Defender's almost exclusively defensive techniques. The new Defender subclass maintains some of its defensive capabilities in the form of their wall, and in the fact that you still summon a Void shield. But that shield can be used as a weapon as well, to great effectiveness in the right hands. We have little need to defend against the Cabal now. They are have already broken through our defenses, there is nothing left to fortify. So now we must change our tactics. We must take their tactics from them, and drive them from our solar system.
I wonder if, like marshal arts, it is possible to mix and match techniques? Like having a solar bomb instead of a nova Bomb? Then we would be able to get rid of the classes i.e hunter, Warlock, and titan.
And what do you mean by "mix and match"? As in "combining Pathfinder and Trapper, you can shoot multiple trapper arrows"? Combining Defender's shield melee with shield throwing?
9:10 The lore-point of view of each Guardian having slightly different abilities actually shows in game to a small extent. To use the striker Titan as an example: the Vanguard teaches them all the same technique (Fist of Havok) but each Guardian develops a variation (the Aftermath, Death from Above, and Shockwave abilities.) Really enjoyed the video. You do some amazing work.
I'm so hyped for Destiny 2. I've been playing D1 since the beta and have always had a fair understanding for the lore. Although, I have been watching your lore videos on my offline playlist while I'm at work everyday for the past few months. There's a lot of rich story for existing races, rising threats and lost guardians that I hope make it into the next game. Fingers crossed that some of this stuff makes it in, but either way your content has informed me a lot about a game that I love and have always enjoyed. The wait is almost over!
Great video! I've been thinking about a nice way to put a bow around what's going on with guardian subclasses after Destiny 1 and I've come up with a few fun explanations that satisfy my need for a cohesive timeline. 1) Some (ambiguous) time has passed since the events of D1. Since guardians are effectively immortal, this can be months, years or decades. New discoveries were made on how to manipulate the light. 2) Maybe there was a group of guardians off doing other stuff during the events of D1 and they figured out new and unique ways to manipulate the light and are now returning to the tower. 3) These new subclasses have always been there, we just haven't heard of or seen them. We'll have to see if there are actual subclass factions mentioned by other existing guardians from D1 (ie - Ikora mentions 'the dawnblades' in passing as if they were always there, or Cayde explains that gunslingers were always able to shoot 6 golden gun bullets, sating our curiosity about how Jaren Ward did it back in Palamon)

Hey Myelin I've been tossing an idea around in my head since Beta. My opinion on the Subclasses is as follows. Firstly, Destiny 2 has Gunslinger, Striker and Voidwalker Subclasses from the original game. These subclasses are all subclasses known and practiced by the Vanguard, Ikora is a Voidwalker, Cayde-6 a Gunslinger, and we see in the Zavala trailer, that he is, or was a Striker (more on why Zavala is a Sentinel, not a Defender, in a bit). When we loose our light, part of our learning process, once we regain the use of light, is to learn the core techniques (the basics) from Cayde-6, Zavala, and Ikora. Now, the new classes all fit nicely into my theory in the following manner; Arc Striders clearly learned much of of their abilities from Striker Titans (namely Zavala), the storm fist type melee, the ground pounding area attack with the staff etc; in short, hunters learned the use of a more raw form of Arc attack incorporating it with some knowledge of the blade dancer. The Titans learned to use the void for more focused ranged attacks from Ikora( a Voidwalker), while still leaning on the Zavala knowledge of the Defender Sub-class. Coincidently I find it interesting that Zavala seems to be the only member of the Vanguard to be shown to use two different subclasses. And finally Warlocks more knowledgeable in the path of the Sunsinger have learned to fashion light into sword, fashioning Solar light into a weapon, or imbuing a weapon with Solar light, a skill which the Gunslingers are well known for. Essentially what I believe we have is, a cooperation among the remaining guardians as they work together, combining knowledge in order to discover new paths to mastering the light. This sharing of knowledge is not without precedent, as we have other sources in the lore which allude to shared abilities (think the Blink ability). As I believe, you have noted before, the Taken King subclasses were a more advanced form and much more rare approaches to the light, possibly even daring on the light in different ways than the other subclasses. Anyways just thought I would share. Great videos btw keep up the awesome work,
I was thinking about the differences in subclasses from individual understanding of the light being the different ability trees you get to pick from. Say, for instance, some strikers use shoulder charge while others use juggernaut. Or choice of grenades such as tripmines or incendiary for different gunslingers

Hey, Myelin, when the Destiny 2 subclasses are fully released, will you do lore videos on them? If Dawnblade*, Arc Strider, and Sentinel aren't just modified Sunsingers, Bladedancers, and Defenders, that is. (*IDK what the name is.)
Luis Torres wouldn't work lore wise and the "new" subclasses still don't fit lore wise. Bungie just took away somethings like self revive because of the pvp tryhards it's as simple as that.
BeloseGaming I guess we'll see if you are right when the game comes out because I don't see any logical sense to why a sunsinger would want to trade self revive for a flame sword. I get the whole angel with a flaming sword thing but why trade a power of self revival for it. Btw I never play as sunsinger I was always voidwalker or stormcaller.
BeloseGaming Back to say, they don’t fit at all. There’s no development or training, the odd thing? The old classes still exist in the universe. Cayde is shown blinking and the old defender exists. The new classes are Flashy nerfs. Nothing more
I like this theory a lot! I have always wondered how and why enemy weapons are able to deal void\solar\arc damage when we guardians are the only ones with access to the travelers light and this answers that question! With this theory i now understand that they are not welding light at all but merely using weaponry infused with these energy's (as we do with our weapons) but only those gifted with the travelers light can transfer those energy's in to something more!
I have always believed that the Taken king subclasses weren't necessarily new sources of power but sort of an imitation of techniques used by others. We shaped our light differently to how it is used. And the D2 classes sort of cemented that for me as it appears we have just shaped our light differently. Kind of like a wizard/witch learning to use magic. The energy source is the same but the incantation leads to many varying results. Poor example but gets my point through.
ToxicMachine1 Arcstrider functions and is used fairly differently, but yeah. It's still an arc melee super so I get what you mean. Also Skyline, Self Rez wasn't really a crutch unless you were that bad at the game or were intentionally using it as one. And in the case of people that were that bad, it still wasn't really a crutch due to them just ending up dead again quickly anyways.
So having played through Destiny 2, it seems the Shard of the Traveler that restores our Light seems to show us also long-lost forms of using the Light, as the Arcstrider Lore says that "No one remembers the first Arcstrider" and that the Arcstriders existed before the City and its walls. In the same manner, I think a Dawnblade's sword and the Sentinel's Shield were used by Guardians long before the events of D1, and by that time had fallen out of practice, in favor of Sunsingers, Defenders, and Bladedancers
I always just assumed the new subclasses, To fit the balance changes. Were simply a change from the shard, from the traveler itself. The traveler showed a new, warped and changed way to manipulate the light. A new an empowered way to fight back and come to its rescue in the city.
By this point our guardian is a legendary Hero same as the ones we read of in the grimoir. Whos to say our guardian wasnt the one to develop the new tequnique for their respective subclass.
So the shard of the traveler fell off of it long ago right? So if we get our light from it we can assume it’s a form of light that has not been changed due to time. Hence Osiris and his Dawn caller ability not the sung singer. The older guardians those who came before the city have these abilities and have adapted to a more recent version of the light. But those who left still have the older ones and did not change to conform to the city
Though I really like night stalker and the other 3rd sun classes I do really hope that Bungie makes new 3rd sub classes. Having 1 from the first game is fine but I think people will see it as been too similar to being the first game that people might get bored faster with the sub classes unless there are at least 2 new sub classes
Can u do a lore on exos eating and drinking. Many dialogue has said that exos can drink and eat. But in that one strike cayde said he doesn't even have a stomach.
From you first point of 'some lore might not carry over': Does this mean you can't neccessarily speculate on new lore we get to know about that may or may not be connected to 'D1 lore' because it might not actually carry over? In other words, is this a puzzle that has removed some pieces to create a new, more defined puzzle?
Myelin games I have a question for the Destiny society. Can SIVA flood or even kill and extinct the Vex network or can vex take and master SIVA to take back all of the worlds that are taken from Oryx ?

I want it to be that some items (staff, sheild, sword) have been infused by light. Or at least elemental energy. I want our new powers to come from those items instead of from our light. In d1 we manifested our powers from within us by channeling our light. But when that light is no longer within us we must find these lost hidden relics and we have to bind these items to us to allow us to manifest them from tge light/energy around us
Alyshia Parker are we sure we do though? We did in the beta but have they confirmed that we definitely will have them in our first missions. Or were we just able to play them in the beta so they could properly be tested?! If it has been confirmed then im sorry cuz i haven't heard
I had a theory that different parts of the traveler provided different types of arc void and solar light thus since the shard gives us our light in D2 we get different yet similar subclasses
As an altinitive means of the subclasses origin, and this is based on the knowledge that the Traveler is alive, perhaps the Traveler itself created them. What if the Traveler, by means of his light, experiences everything we do. Then by observing us and how we use the light it might form representitive ideas of us. Like a Titan being sheild to withstand the darkness. Then durring the fall of the city it might have realized what was about to happen. It couldn't reach the Vanguard or anyone else in the city, as they were both in a hyper focused panic and evacuating. Leaving the Traveler to its fate. Meanwhile, we were unconscious, making it easier to reach us. Not to mention stranded and in the city. Completely tied to the fate of the Traveler. So in a dream it showed us 3 forms, the representations it had built, and then the shard which could still give us a source of light. It then left the fight to us and since it no longer had light being sent out to maintain the Guardians, since we know it is a direct and constant feed, it was able to redirect it and prepare for the moment when it would break free of containment. Through the dream we concieve of the sheild because when the traveler showed us what it saw Titans to be we were shown that potential use of light.
Obviously in game we use three different sunglasses but, in the real iteration do guardians only use one subclass? For example we only see Zavala use void, Cayde Gunslinger, and Ikora Void. In lore we hear how different Guardians are classified as Sunbreakers, VoidWalkers, etc. Do guardians really only use one subclass?
I personally felt that the 6 new/remixed subclasses were a silent confirmation of the prowess of our Guardian. Cayde is the only one who really admits to us that "the Vanguard wouldn't be what it is today without you" and considering the crazy forces our guardian has faced and defeated, and short amount of years we've been around, we're canonically pretty badass, remarkably so even. So I think it pretty fitting that the 6 classes we have now are all the same 6 basic ones we were taught. It shows that our guardian is a prodigy, who mastered these techniques. improved them, used the styles of them interchangeably to better them all (ie all hunter classes getting the stalker dodge or all titan classes using the shielding light from the defender) and took them to places no other guardian had yet tried. I'll be disappointed if we are simply taught these new moves and abilities as I think it diminishes the skill level our guardian is supposed to have.
Alex Gavin i agree and while there have been badass guardians in the past ( saint-14, osiris , pahanin , iron lords etc) our generation of guardians could possibly be the most talented, slaying gods and unlocking classes that either were very rare ( nighstalker) very hard to master ( stormcaller) or havent been seen in thr city ( sunbreaker)
Personally I think the dark and the light are a bit like the force in that there's some in everything but the traveler is an extremely power catalyst for us to more easily touch the lifht
I thought our characters were just cosmetic clones, and the new guardians light is changed by the impure light from the shard. That's how the classes change. Since the vanguard use the d1 abilities
Jaguar I believe Felwinter to be a special case. Lore wise, the Ghost probably comes to a decision on what class would they suit the best. Since Felwinter was one of the first Guardians, it is possible his Ghost might have made him a hybrid of sorts.
I thought that the guardians in destiny 2 are more experienced guardians than the ones we played in destiny 1 sense the guardian is called into battle to fight the red leagion and the vanguard are calling the best guardians to stop them
Is it confirmed that the black garden contains void energy because in the nightstalker quest you get the void energy from Tevis not from the black garden
I hope we are forced to play as Voidwalker, Gunslinger and Striker so as to have the opportunity to have the showcase of the drastic changes from Sunsinger, Bladedancer, and Defender to Dawnblade, Arcstrider and Sentinel while the new minor changes to the first set is explained away with a quick "You had to relearn from scratch so you ended up with some slightly different results than when the Vanguard trained you."
Wouldn't it be cool if these advancements in subclasses were created because of the raid bosses? "I held the Aegis and now I have made it part of me." "I held a sword to defeat Crota now it's a part of me." The only one that stumps me is Arcstrider, which would be cool to match up with Orxy and the many jumping puzzles involved, but that's more of a stretch
does this mean that if a newborn guardian comes across a nuclear plant, they will gain a solar super ability? And if a guardian touches a power line, they'll gain an arc super ability??
Technique. I like when you go back on the quote that the various types of light is merely the light shined through a prism. I also enjoy the connection between learning a subclass is comparable to Martial Arts. It gets me thinking that while we only know of manipulation and use of Solar, Arc, and Void Light Energy within the current realms of Destiny's Story and Lore. I think it also opens the realm and possibilities of there being other types of light energy in the future that we Guardians can control and maybe even create a new subclass entirely from this discovery of light energy. I always thought if a fourth light energy was introduced it could be based around the water element because of the range water can have within it solid, liquid, and gaseous states.
I still don't like the extreme inconsistency of not being able to use self-res. At least the other subclasses retain much more continuity. The Warlocks don't.

Besides the video, since this second iteration is essentially Bungie clearing the air of the first; why did they place a "2" after the title of the game. Isn't the number "2" a progression in an arithmetic series? Isn't "2" a continuation in learning to count? Doesn't "2" come AFTER "1"? Bungie seems to have lost some coherence where progression and lore development came into play. Concerning Light. I think it was mentioned somewhere in the early content that Humans were fundamentally changed when we made contact with the Traveler. Human lifespans were extended and our mental faculties were expanded (let's assume that contact with the Traveler allowed homo sapiens to access a higher percentage of our brain). If we consider these changes, humans also gained the ability to tap into the energy source of the Traveler, this source of energy we deemed Light. Seeing as the universe of Destiny is grounded in science, then there should be an in-universe explanation as to what 'Light' is and why it can resurrect long dead individuals and be used in its various ways. Abilities/subclassess can easily be explained as 'schools of understanding'. Each school will teach different ways in which to interpret and manifest the energy which humans can now collect and receive int their bodies (Ghosts here are being thought of as transceivers that are making remote connections to the traveler, albeit unconsciously since the ghosts are not shown to actively reveal the Traveler's status) So the creation of new abilites/classes and the explanation of current ones can be summed up to the capability of individuals to tap into these energy sources. The multitude of ways that individuas harness these energies are what will create the different schools of understanding.

I think the new subclasses are the "pure form" of the original subclasses. They seem very similar to the original subclasses, with some modifications

Luis Torres wouldn't work lore wise and the "new" subclasses still don't fit lore wise. Bungie just took away somethings like self revive because of the pvp tryhards it's as simple as that.
BeloseGaming I guess we'll see if you are right when the game comes out because I don't see any logical sense to why a sunsinger would want to trade self revive for a flame sword. I get the whole angel with a flaming sword thing but why trade a power of self revival for it. Btw I never play as sunsinger I was always voidwalker or stormcaller.

I like this theory a lot! I have always wondered how and why enemy weapons are able to deal void\solar\arc damage when we guardians are the only ones with access to the travelers light and this answers that question! With this theory i now understand that they are not welding light at all but merely using weaponry infused with these energy's (as we do with our weapons) but only those gifted with the travelers light can transfer those energy's in to something more!
I have always believed that the Taken king subclasses weren't necessarily new sources of power but sort of an imitation of techniques used by others. We shaped our light differently to how it is used. And the D2 classes sort of cemented that for me as it appears we have just shaped our light differently.
Kind of like a wizard/witch learning to use magic. The energy source is the same but the incantation leads to many varying results. Poor example but gets my point through.

Also Skyline, Self Rez wasn't really a crutch unless you were that bad at the game or were intentionally using it as one. And in the case of people that were that bad, it still wasn't really a crutch due to them just ending up dead again quickly anyways.
So having played through Destiny 2, it seems the Shard of the Traveler that restores our Light seems to show us also long-lost forms of using the Light, as the Arcstrider Lore says that "No one remembers the first Arcstrider" and that the Arcstriders existed before the City and its walls. In the same manner, I think a Dawnblade's sword and the Sentinel's Shield were used by Guardians long before the events of D1, and by that time had fallen out of practice, in favor of Sunsingers, Defenders, and Bladedancers
I always just assumed the new subclasses, To fit the balance changes. Were simply a change from the shard, from the traveler itself. The traveler showed a new, warped and changed way to manipulate the light. A new an empowered way to fight back and come to its rescue in the city.

By this point our guardian is a legendary Hero same as the ones we read of in the grimoir. Whos to say our guardian wasnt the one to develop the new tequnique for their respective subclass.
So the shard of the traveler fell off of it long ago right? So if we get our light from it we can assume it’s a form of light that has not been changed due to time. Hence Osiris and his Dawn caller ability not the sung singer. The older guardians those who came before the city have these abilities and have adapted to a more recent version of the light. But those who left still have the older ones and did not change to conform to the city

Though I really like night stalker and the other 3rd sun classes I do really hope that Bungie makes new 3rd sub classes. Having 1 from the first game is fine but I think people will see it as been too similar to being the first game that people might get bored faster with the sub classes unless there are at least 2 new sub classes
Can u do a lore on exos eating and drinking. Many dialogue has said that exos can drink and eat. But in that one strike cayde said he doesn't even have a stomach.
From you first point of 'some lore might not carry over': Does this mean you can't neccessarily speculate on new lore we get to know about that may or may not be connected to 'D1 lore' because it might not actually carry over?
In other words, is this a puzzle that has removed some pieces to create a new, more defined puzzle?

I want it to be that some items (staff, sheild, sword) have been infused by light. Or at least elemental energy. I want our new powers to come from those items instead of from our light. In d1 we manifested our powers from within us by channeling our light. But when that light is no longer within us we must find these lost hidden relics and we have to bind these items to us to allow us to manifest them from tge light/energy around us

I had a theory that different parts of the traveler provided different types of arc void and solar light thus since the shard gives us our light in D2 we get different yet similar subclasses
As an altinitive means of the subclasses origin, and this is based on the knowledge that the Traveler is alive, perhaps the Traveler itself created them. What if the Traveler, by means of his light, experiences everything we do. Then by observing us and how we use the light it might form representitive ideas of us. Like a Titan being sheild to withstand the darkness. Then durring the fall of the city it might have realized what was about to happen. It couldn't reach the Vanguard or anyone else in the city, as they were both in a hyper focused panic and evacuating. Leaving the Traveler to its fate. Meanwhile, we were unconscious, making it easier to reach us. Not to mention stranded and in the city. Completely tied to the fate of the Traveler. So in a dream it showed us 3 forms, the representations it had built, and then the shard which could still give us a source of light. It then left the fight to us and since it no longer had light being sent out to maintain the Guardians, since we know it is a direct and constant feed, it was able to redirect it and prepare for the moment when it would break free of containment. Through the dream we concieve of the sheild because when the traveler showed us what it saw Titans to be we were shown that potential use of light.
Obviously in game we use three different sunglasses but, in the real iteration do guardians only use one subclass? For example we only see Zavala use void, Cayde Gunslinger, and Ikora Void. In lore we hear how different Guardians are classified as Sunbreakers, VoidWalkers, etc. Do guardians really only use one subclass?

I personally felt that the 6 new/remixed subclasses were a silent confirmation of the prowess of our Guardian. Cayde is the only one who really admits to us that "the Vanguard wouldn't be what it is today without you" and considering the crazy forces our guardian has faced and defeated, and short amount of years we've been around, we're canonically pretty badass, remarkably so even.
So I think it pretty fitting that the 6 classes we have now are all the same 6 basic ones we were taught. It shows that our guardian is a prodigy, who mastered these techniques. improved them, used the styles of them interchangeably to better them all (ie all hunter classes getting the stalker dodge or all titan classes using the shielding light from the defender) and took them to places no other guardian had yet tried.
I'll be disappointed if we are simply taught these new moves and abilities as I think it diminishes the skill level our guardian is supposed to have.
Alex Gavin i agree and while there have been badass guardians in the past ( saint-14, osiris , pahanin , iron lords etc) our generation of guardians could possibly be the most talented, slaying gods and unlocking classes that either were very rare ( nighstalker) very hard to master ( stormcaller) or havent been seen in thr city ( sunbreaker)
Personally I think the dark and the light are a bit like the force in that there's some in everything but the traveler is an extremely power catalyst for us to more easily touch the lifht
I thought our characters were just cosmetic clones, and the new guardians light is changed by the impure light from the shard. That's how the classes change. Since the vanguard use the d1 abilities

Jaguar I believe Felwinter to be a special case. Lore wise, the Ghost probably comes to a decision on what class would they suit the best. Since Felwinter was one of the first Guardians, it is possible his Ghost might have made him a hybrid of sorts.

Oh I know. I don't always use my supper, but when I do, I always accidentally create a bubble instead of summoning my shield.
I hope we are forced to play as Voidwalker, Gunslinger and Striker so as to have the opportunity to have the showcase of the drastic changes from Sunsinger, Bladedancer, and Defender to Dawnblade, Arcstrider and Sentinel while the new minor changes to the first set is explained away with a quick "You had to relearn from scratch so you ended up with some slightly different results than when the Vanguard trained you."

The only one that stumps me is Arcstrider, which would be cool to match up with Orxy and the many jumping puzzles involved, but that's more of a stretch

Technique. I like when you go back on the quote that the various types of light is merely the light shined through a prism. I also enjoy the connection between learning a subclass is comparable to Martial Arts.
It gets me thinking that while we only know of manipulation and use of Solar, Arc, and Void Light Energy within the current realms of Destiny's Story and Lore. I think it also opens the realm and possibilities of there being other types of light energy in the future that we Guardians can control and maybe even create a new subclass entirely from this discovery of light energy.
I always thought if a fourth light energy was introduced it could be based around the water element because of the range water can have within it solid, liquid, and gaseous states.
They are supposed to be Dark Age subclasses just read the Arcstrider lore it hints you a lot of things

Besides the video, since this second iteration is essentially Bungie clearing the air of the first; why did they place a "2" after the title of the game. Isn't the number "2" a progression in an arithmetic series? Isn't "2" a continuation in learning to count? Doesn't "2" come AFTER "1"? Bungie seems to have lost some coherence where progression and lore development came into play.
Concerning Light. I think it was mentioned somewhere in the early content that Humans were fundamentally changed when we made contact with the Traveler. Human lifespans were extended and our mental faculties were expanded (let's assume that contact with the Traveler allowed homo sapiens to access a higher percentage of our brain).
If we consider these changes, humans also gained the ability to tap into the energy source of the Traveler, this source of energy we deemed Light. Seeing as the universe of Destiny is grounded in science, then there should be an in-universe explanation as to what 'Light' is and why it can resurrect long dead individuals and be used in its various ways.
Abilities/subclassess can easily be explained as 'schools of understanding'. Each school will teach different ways in which to interpret and manifest the energy which humans can now collect and receive int their bodies (Ghosts here are being thought of as transceivers that are making remote connections to the traveler, albeit unconsciously since the ghosts are not shown to actively reveal the Traveler's status)
So the creation of new abilites/classes and the explanation of current ones can be summed up to the capability of individuals to tap into these energy sources. The multitude of ways that individuas harness these energies are what will create the different schools of understanding.
I completely agreee with your comments about humans changing. Almost like mutant DNA being activated allowing them to use the light and be guardians. CHeck out my vid about how guardians are revived, I htink I speak about it then. Thanks for the comment
