    On the construction of the book: We get spoiled with so many smaller occult publishers putting out beautifully constructed books which are often true works of art in themselves aside from their contents but Joseph H Peterson can't be commended enough for putting out his excellent books at such accessible price points, not to mention all the free work available on his amazing website. Dr. Skinner has also said as much in interviews where Peterson's work has come up. As much fun as it is to spend hundreds of dollars on deluxe collector's editions, thanks to Peterson it's possible for every practitioner to have reliable copies of critical works like the Greater and Lesser Keys of Solomon, the Grimorium Verum, the Arbatel, the Sixth & Seventh books of Moses, & John Dee's Five Books of Mystery.

      in 500 years from now, when they look back at who were greatest esoteric writers of our time, Joseph Peterson would be one of them, it would be nice to have this particular book and much of Petersons other works in my families private collection passed down the generations but sadly this particular book which is master piece in itself will not survive the test of time due to its poor construction. So it would be nice if they provided collectors editions of Joseph Petersons books for those of us who collect books with the next 7 generations of our families in mind.

    Thank you for the review Denis, my copy arrived yesterday with binding thankfully intact. Just one point I'd like to make in connection with your opening remarks, just to give credit where it is due. The Vatican and Ghent manuscripts have been known about for a long time, the former being identified by Graziella Federici Vescovini back in 1988 and the latter by Jean-Patrice Boudet in 2006. The 2013 article and partial edition of reg, lat. 1115 by Julien Véronèse was the first to look at the Elucidarius/Lucidarium in any detail, and by that time both manuscripts had been digitised and were available online. This is in no way diminishes Peterson's extraordinary work - he's made new discoveries, has gone far beyond anything written on the subject previously and made this valuable material available to the English-speaking world in an accessible form - but is rather a reminder that we all stand on the shoulders of giants.

    The construction is kind of a shame because historical grimoires given the multi-manuscript treatment don't seem to be that common. Usually it seems to be a translation of whatever they had on hand or personally considered the 'best' version.

    So now I am a bit concerned about the binding quality of my newer IBIS Press books. I opened one I purchased in 2020, and the spine separated from the bottom ribbon. I could hear the glue crack. The top of the spine also shows some separation. However, the books I purchased in 2012-2014 and read cover to cover show no such issues. I do hope that the Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses will hold up better than that.

  • @jamesfindice2871
    @jamesfindice2871 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wow, i just looked at this on amazon and seeing the quality of the book i’m happy i did not yet pull the trigger. Also i don’t think 62€ is a fair price for a ”mass market” bound.

    • @FoolishFishBooks
      @FoolishFishBooks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      In this instance you are very much paying for the content, not the paper. Joseph Peterson's insight here is worth th easking price ten times over. We have to remember that it not "actually" mass market, the demand for this type of book is tiny, and the people involved have to make a living or they'll have no choice but to move on to other things that will keep them alive...

  • @josephhpeterson5768
    @josephhpeterson5768 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hmm. The binding looks very similar to that on my $250 Routledge History of Medieval Magic. Maybe yours is different from mine. What exactly is the problem?

    • @FoolishFishBooks
      @FoolishFishBooks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Joseph, and first of all congratulations on the terrific release!
      To answer your question, take a look at 8:23 : the pages are barely being held to the cover by the incompletely glued endpapers so that the body of the book falls forward to the point that the pages poke out even beyond the edges of the cover when held upright (as it sits on the shelf). I wonder if your copy is maybe in better nick than mine.
      Again, as I stated, one needs to discern when one is buying a beautiful book from when one is buying invaluable information as in this case! 😊

    I didn’t keep my copy. Sent it back. Maybe it was just my copy, but the images were extremely low-res (nothing like Oberon) and the size of the book was not, in my opinion, equal to the cover price of the book. It was a pamphlet compared to Oberon, and they both cost the same.

    If you look at Peter's life you will undoubtedly find that he was a realist, he did not believe in the resurrection of Christ he did not believe in demons he did not believe in spirits or ghosts and this kind of falls into that category so it really would have gone against his grain. Sorry I'm not trying to bash a wonderful work of esotericism which I'm sure has many wonderful insights in it but I'm sure Peter what have been displeased with this work.
