    Also point the torch slightly towards the direction you are cutting. Even when cutting bevels.

    First time I saw one of those was in the 1970's (yeah, I'm old) guy working for my dad had one (bless you Ernie I learned a lot from you), he used it to true up the end of 16-inch 0.219 wall well casing (before that we used a torch and soapstone marker). Just add more chain and it could cut almost any diameter steel pipe. His used combine or thresher machine chain not roller chain (much easier to add and subtract links). Add a couple of rollers to your pipe stands and you'll really have something.

    You aren't the only one who buys tools in advance of when you need them and getting something at a bargain price is always good. I picked up a demonstration small wood lathe a few years ago that was incomplete and had no tools. I got some wood turning tools on eBay and once I get my new shop finished, I'll set it up and have a go with it. I did woodwork in school, but I never used a wood lathe, so like you, this will be a first for me.

    Used one of these in New Zealand back in the 80s....They were common on the site of the oil refinery build. The ones we used were called a "Pipe Mate"..... cleanest cut is if you turn off the acetylene once the cut is established and just use oxygen......

  • @mikec.9177
    @mikec.9177 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Josh if you need a better quality cut you can grind the seam down flush and the machine won’t hop as it crosses over it. If you run your torch closer to the machine you won’t get the shake out at the torch.

    • @TopperMachineLLC
      @TopperMachineLLC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It really wasn't an issue on the seam. We slowed it thinking it would be a problem, but it blew right through. The reason for the torch being so far out is the angle of the torch. That far out was how it cleared the main unit.

    Good video! I have to cut 12” Sch 20 pipe sometimes, a tool like that would be handy, but for 12” it works OK to use 1/8” plastic sheet wrapped around the pipe and strapped as a guide for the plasma cutter. As an interesting side note, the Dakota Access Pipeline passes hardly a mile from me and it is built with 30” pipe like you have there. Most is 12” thick, under roads and bodies of water it is 5/8” thick.

      Everything I was ever taught about torching was thrown out the window when I started this setup. It's amazing how hand torching is taught to crank the heat and cut, but machine torching is totally different. Whole new learning experience, that is ongoing. But it sure is fun to learn you were taught wrong and start over.
