I remember reading Dumas's "The Count of Monte Cristo" where Edmond Dantes talks about "buying a passport." While that was a novel from the 1840s or so, perhaps the passports from the 14th century were issued differently from today? Nation states of the kind that exist today came into existence only in the early 17th century anyway... Great informative trivia here!
