@@ShadeShannonunfortunately that is not dot and dab, it always amazes me plasterers don't understand the concept, when we was doing this in the late 70s different these days with mf metal frame, anyway dot and dab, adhesive on the wall and put a packer into it with either 9.5 plasterboard or the green black yellow blue Packers we now use for double glazing, do this in 4 corners, string line across each one, so now you have four corners which should now be vertically un horizontally plum, so now you do this in a series of places through the lines, now you put your dabs of adhesive over the walls, you press your plasterboard to your Packers now the plasterboard won't go any further because they hit the dots, no need to smack the plasterboard with a Derby or level or even level a plasterboards up because they are plum, this is why it is called dot and dab, what he is showing you here is just dab, as a structural engineer master builder and stone mason is still amazes me people are being shown things incorrectly, if you're ever down Cardiff way look us up we will be more than happy to show you how things are done properly,

All systems go! You Did the right thing by living in it for a while as we can rush in and regret it later. I could watch a room being plastered all day, I'm in awe of how easily they do it. I turn my hand to most things but would definately leave it to the professionals. I'm excited to watch the progress xx
I moved into my 60 year old house nearly 30 years ago, I plastered the full house straight away, it cost me an hilarious amout , £350 for the WHOLE house, and its a large 3 bedroom semi with an extension, Im not kidding, but never plastered the ceilings at the time , I dont know what I was thinking, I then did all the ceilings probably 20 years ago , so I gave myself 2 lots of mess, and it was messy! I taught myself to plaster now , but only do cupboards and repairs, its not as easy as it looks.

Great to do jobs yourself but it is good that you learnt a bit about plastering but left the actual work to someone who has spent years learning how to plaster. There are a couple of youtubers who tried this themselves and made a total hash and had to pay to get the job redone. A dehumidifier can help dry plaster out. You can attend courses on how to plaster if you wanted to.
Definitely start upstairs, any dust you create from sanding plaster and cleaning up will make its way downstairs. The next, most important thing is storage so do your dressing room next (speaking from experience of 8 renovations). Then you can put away all your stuff and keep it clean. After that I’d do the master bedroom, as you say you need a retreat. I loved your bedroom in the previous home and I think board and baton is timeless and classic. It can be sophisticated or a little bit country if that’s your vibe. The raised decorative beading you used in your mum’s place was lovely but I much prefer what you did in your previous master. I’m just about to start a refresh on our master and am absolutely going to copy your bedroom from your old home.

You did really well trying to plaster! I think panelling of any kind would look great painted the same colour as living room behind your bed.. We had our downstairs rooms ceilings skimmed before we moved in {horrible fan patterned Artex} yuk!! We didn't have the coving taken off to do it though so wasn't as bad; Plastering is definitely an art!!!

Just a tiny thing all trades should adhere from don’t use your level to bang against your plaster board it will damage the level use a spare timber. look after your tools & they will look after you.
I had my artex ceilings skimmed over 5 years ago…and last week a massive section fell onto my husbands head!! I’ve had several plasterers come and look and they have all said they would never just skim over and we should have had over boards…..and that if you skim over eventually it could fail and come down like it has! Only one has said that’s not true and we can just patch up that bit……but with a young child in the house I’m petrified more could come down!! It’s so hard knowing which advice to trust, especially as the original guy was very experienced and I’m sure if he had said it may come down we would have overboarded in the first place. Now though we have platster corncicing and so we would have to remove this, and it’s a huge room so will cost us thousands rather than £300 just to patch it up….safety is my main worry…but obviously we dont have 2/3k just lieing around to overboard……. How do we get honest accurate advice?
Sadly there's no one right answer for dealing with artex. Different plasterers prefer different methods, and many are scared to even go near it. A lot depends on the type of Artex and the age of the house. A lot of older homes aren't ideal to plaster over as there's a good chance there's limewash paint under the artex which, when plastered, the weight pulls it off the ceiling. Most plasterers just don't want to risk it and suggest to overboard. Even the best plasterers have had artex ceilings fail on them after plastering.

Once you sort your vision boards you’ll see what is what and needs doing first. Personally I think starting with your bedroom would be good idea…your retreat at the end of a day’s work. It will all get done so pace yourself. The way you were describing your dressing room with an island reminds me of Gemma Louise Miles dressing room on YT which she and her fiancé Jamie kitted out with IKEA I think Pax system. Take a look. You did well with skim exercise, you didn’t look awkward at all, Alfie might hire you. He has a kind heart to let you and his young labourer have a go. Harder than you think - (and a very skilled job), that’s why they’re called Master Plasterers 😆 and very heavy on your neck, shoulders and elbows, which is why they tend to stop doing it in their mid-forties and start doing the tarting-up bits instead
Why don't you put your office on the wall opposite the wardrobes in the new dressing room? Make it a cloffice. Perhaps do that room first - then you have all your storage done before you start on the bedrooms.

what is their advice on asbestos? Can they do this over that as it doesn't look like they are disturbing it?
