Many changes to Tawas Point since I was a young child. I recall falling asleep at night on my grandparents' front porch to the sound of the waves on the eastern shore of the point and the old fog horn at the end of the point. My grandfather was among activists who prevented private developers from acquiring the point and instead enabling its development as a State Park.
For years in the 70s and 80s I enjoyed taking my dog for long walks along the beach on the east (open lake) side of the point. However, in recent years, the park has decided to prohibit dogs from being on any of the park's trails that extend out onto the point from the campground. I suppose they are worried that a dog's presence may frighten away some of the tens of thousands of seagulls that have defecated to a horrible extent in the shallow water areas sheltered by the point. From this video, it appears however that dogs are welcome at the Tawas Point Grille.
