I was over at my friends house and came across a rusted out block plane. Seeing such a high quality woodworking tool in this condition, I told him that I would do what I could to restore it.
This restoration project brought a lot of satisfaction. The end result is a pristine, good as new, fully restored beautiful woodworking tool - Enjoy!
Go buy a $10 block plane at the hardware store. Give that to your friend and tell him he gets the Lie Nielsen plane back when he's learned to properly care for his tools.
Dear sir, I couldn't agree more.
Good idea
Let’s be grown-ups. There was no friend. This plane was obviously rusted on purpose because he knows that restoration videos are popular at the moment.
@@Scatterpattern Probably. When you look at the corrosion on it, it looks like someone placed it about 3/4" deep in something corrosive. It doesn't look like it was just randomly left outside. But, for the sake of entertainment, let's assume that this "friend" actually exists. I do know a few people who habitually neglect their tools. It does happen. If you want to do a restoration video, it's not hard to find a rusted pile of junk.
@@Scatterpattern just goes to show ya how much money youtubers get if hes willing to possibly ruin a 200$ block plane..🧐 ik of at least 10 youtubers tht all recently bought brand new built from ground up houses and they're full time tubers.must be nice
-"Where did you get that plane Samurai?"
-"Oh that plane... she's a rescue."
As a lover of nice tools and beautiful wood it is my belief that we always give. No matter how little or how much we have been given, always give. The circumstances of this fine tool being in this terrible shape are unclear but the fact that you continue to call him, "My friend" lends value to him. The joy of giving it a second life is yours alone but, the joy of a second chance to show that fine plane the respect it is due by using it to create and taking care of it will always rest with him in the future. Maybe in giving it back you will save two things you value in your life. Just my 2 cents.
This is probably the best comment I've ever read on the internet.
i agree that giving the plane back is the nicest thing to do.
but he should also give him an a**whooping for mistreating such a nice tool,
but hey thats jus my 2 cents.
A bit from Wikipedia; "samurai were bound by a code of honor and were expected to set an example for those below them." To apply this in this current situation, keeping the plane would be dishonorable. Return it, along with guidance on its use & care. You both will sleep better in the end.
Love your work, keep it up!
You are correct the samurai would give it back and instructed him..
This Sicilian would have picked up the neglected tool walked over to the owner and slapped him. Then I would have restored it. And charge himm a hundred bucks for the restoration if he wanted it back.
@@ironmyno I agree, the amount of work involved restoring it is pretty much the value of the plane.
And the slap would be on him!
@@ironmyno no doubt bro 👍
YOU COULD ACT LIKE A MAN !!!!
To set example, he would have to force his friend to do a sepuku ritual for the dishonouring the carpentry practise.
The love of tools compels us to restore quality tools like this. Nice job!
Beautiful restoration, love it. I don’t think your friend see the value of his equipment, so you better keep it your self. Thank you for sharing your amazing story. God bless you and your family
Sir you have remade a masterpiece. I'm in love with that. Makes me wanna grab all kinds of wood and start shaving them now. Thank you. God bless. Enjoy. I really love watching your processes.
I wouldn't give it back... Anybody who leaves a beautiful hand tool out like that doesn't deserve it.
What a wonderful job restoring it back to it's former useable glory.
Wrap it up and give it to him for Christmas 🎄 don’t forget to include a polishing cloth some light oil and an instruction sheet on how to care for your tools.
Merry Christmas 🎅🏻
Excellent
My first inclination was "No way can you return this gem of a plane". But, rationality returned, and I'm reminded of how a gesture of kindness can change everything. Could be, upon it's return to your friend in such excellent condition and with little words of encouragement from you on how to probably care for it, the plane will never be abused again. It will be cherished by your friend as a sign of kindness from his friend, The Samurai Carpenter. Just a thought. But, well-done and good on ya for restoring the plane. AWESOME beauty! 👍❤️️
I have that same plane and it’s a beautiful tool. You did an awesome job saving it, the shop in Maine would be proud.
This is an educational moment. Many see no value in old things. They see old tools as just an old piece of junk. Why care that it sits in damp garage and gets rusty. If your friend (friends are many times reflections of ourselves, so I would like to think he has some love of tools) has a love of tools and show him value in what he mistreated. Maybe just maybe you'll have taught him a valuable lesson. Return the tool to him as a Christmas present. Yes he is getting back what is rightfully his, and yet you've had added something he didn't even know was there.
Oh and gorgeous work. Well done.
Lol these block planes are small fortune I have one of these
AAAAA!!!! Never give him this cute baby back! It deserves a better place to live long and prosper :) Great job man!
I love reading the arguments on both sides of whether you should return it or not, all of which are equally valid. My 2p is to just ask him whether he wants it back but that he also understands that in your hands it would be well cared for. I don't know the depth of your friendship but I would hope that he would recognise the value in the work and love you put restoring the tool and make his choice accordingly.
I wish my shop had space for a belt sander, the more I watch people use it, the more uses I can see for my own projects.
Nice as always 😁
Finally, someone who respects quality
You already have the best block plane on the planet. You did a noble thing in restoring it to it’s proper state. If your friend appreciates your effort and love half as much as I do, sending it home is the honorable thing to do👍
Wow!!...the restoration was impeccable as I knew you would do!!!...I agree with other comments that you give it back, but only when he proves he deserves to have it back!!! Amazing job as always and look forward to those carving knives!!!
Holy cow. Thats better condition then brand new!!! All tuned up. Nice job buddy
A friend is worth more than a thing. Even a beautiful thing like that plane.
I love videos when old things are given a new life and loved again.
Keep it! He basically threw it away by not caring for it. You took the initiative of bringing it back to life. Keep it!
returned to life again. it was very nice👍
you and i both know that you should and will return the plane to your friend. you and i and most of your viewers know that it was/is an honor and a privilege and fun to restore the plane. the friend is way more important that the plane. and i would wager that you return it without a lot of fanfare. thank you
So glad you're back making videos
If he's a good friend and you don't already have one ( which of course you do...), I'd ask him if he'd like to sell it, or trade for something . But in the end , contrary to what less honorable people might say, it is his ( stinkin' ethics). Surely the Samurai will do whatever will leave you both satisfied. What a labor of love to bring that beautiful tool back to life !
Speaking for all tool lovers, ( especially all Lie Nielsen ) tool lovers, Kudos to you!! Long live the Samurai!!
Tool restoration is so therapeutic!
Keep it, you earned it Samurai. Excellent Restoration !
Wow, that tool is beautiful again! Nice job!!! Keep it, you gave it new life!
Gracias por la Idea para la recuperación de una Herramienta ......
Great job Samurai !!!
OMG thank god you rescued that beautiful block plane you truly are a saint 😇 nice one
You brought it back to life, keep it.
Awesome Transformation. A Real Labour of Love... But So Worthwhile... 👍🏻
i just picked up a Lie Nielsen plane almost exactly like that one on my trip to maine last year. Mine is almost entirely that brass/bronze though. Beautiful tool! I'm glad you were able to breathe life back into this one!!
It's perfectly possible that the plane was lost, left there by accident and its whereabouts forgotten. It's easy for TH-cam commenters to be judgmental when not necessarily in full possession of the facts. You give the man his plane back (you've got plenty enough planes anyway, no doubt), and I have no doubt at all that he'll be very grateful, and look after it perfectly well from now on. I visited a friend's workshop a few weeks back and saw a rusty old plastic-handled tenon saw hanging on the wall. He gets it back this afternoon cleaned, sharpened, set, and with a new bog oak handle with shiny brass saw nuts. It's what you do for friends.
Keep it! You made it beautifull again and you deserve it!
incredible finished plane !
Thanks for the video.Excellent work. Take care. I wish you good luck.
With Great planes comes Great Responsibility!
Kind of amazing the japanning was still intact so well. 🤙
Of course you return it. It's not yours. The effort in the restoration, however, is admirable and honors the plane and the friend. Good job!
Are u kidding me , who neglecte a plane like that one 😖 good for u rescuing such a plane sir , well done indeed 👌 .
Words like, "daaaang" and "wooow" come to mind! 👍👍
Amazing, nice rescue.
3 dislikes after an hour ? Come on guys what’s the problem.... Thankyou Jesse ! Wicked content !
Give him a Dunlap plane and paint it gold and give that to him instead.haha.
That thing is beautiful! I have the Stanley version...I love it! Great job btw!
Fantastic jesse awesome job.looks thooper thekthy.
That plane is yours man! Good job👍
Thanks for the rescue job! Keep it as a long term custodian :-)
Beauty. Good job.
Those carving knives look amazing!
Bless you Samurai for saving a wonderful tool! Obviously, your friend has no use for a block plane nor does he care about it. I suggest an exchange, the plane for some nice bottles of wine, cigars, or something else he enjoys.
It's your friend's plane, so if it was me, I'd make a nice, but simple wooden box, wrap the plane in some of that wax paper and return the plane wrapped in the wax paper inside the box, to your friend. Nice video, thanks. Cheers, David
Great save !
Wow, now that’s restored!
Maybe the best course would be to offer to pay your friend for the plane. That way everyone can save face, preserve their integrity, and this beautiful tool at least has the opportunity of ending up in the hands of someone who will care for it properly, and do so in an honorable way.
Definitely keep it! Great work on the restoration 👍
I love YOUR new plane!!
By the way, Beautiful Job on the Restoration of that Beautiful Tool.🤗👍👍
Love it bro shows nothing is beyond repair😎😉🤙 I do miss the old samurai tho you seem to have a lot on your shoulders hope life treating u n yours well bro! 👍
No entiendo nada de lo que dices pero sigo tu trabajo desde hace tiempo. Eres un maestro
You should have done a slow slide show with dramatic piano music of it all rusted, then swapped to video and lifted the music when you started restoring it. Like on of those Dog rescue videos that I definitely dont cry too.
Oops forgot to add...you da man for saving it.
Looking forward to the next two projects 👍🏼
Nicely done
Beautiful job
Cracking job! Brought that lovely tool back to life an Id say it’s all about the story behind your friend if he’s had some major disruption in his family life that would warrant the neglect of the plane then maybe he deserves another chance but on the other hand if it’s just laziness that got the plane in the condition you found it then don’t give it back!👍🏻 it’s found it’s respectful owner
I have a similar plane to restore. Very helpful video. Oh, and HELL NO, don't give it back to your friend! LOL
Give it back in full heart , if he declines to accept it , keep it
Give it back to the guy that left it outside to rust like that? Lol nah...
Since he is your friend, give it back to him as a Christmas gift. Remind him that the Good things in Life don't come Easy.😉
Im reading the coments and most of them are like "no dont give back the tool" but, none of you considered that the friends might actualy use the tool. Samurai has a lot of tools in his disposal. This tool might be the gateway to "fine" woodworking for his friend, once he sees how much work has been put into restoring that tool, he might take better care of it, and use it more often.
Who puts tools in his disposal ? :-)
Awesome work my friend...👌👌👌"Long life 2 handplanes" 😉
Is this crime on par with murder?
Isn't it a bit too fluorescent orange though Eric ?
I'm sceptical as to what the real crime is here.
Beat it
yes
Did he realize it was out there and was just blowing it off? Then sorry Charlie, finders keepers! Anyone who knowingly treats high quality tools like that shouldn't be allowed to have them; ever! If he'd been looking for it frantically all over the place and didn't realize it was out there? Well, he'd owe you for life if you gave it back to him. Amazing, comprehensive restoration job. Would love to see it in action.
Happy thanksgiving to you, your family and your very lucky friend!
There's keeping it and there's simply holding onto it. It is his plane, but you've done him a big favor restoring it because you are a good friend. If and when he shows appreciation, give it back to him. Cleaning it was your first favor. This lesson will be a second favor and even third one: if he destroyed it again because you gave it back before he learned his lesson, he would not only have lost the plane, he probably would have gained "These Samurai Hands". Therefore, keeping him safe from violence by not allowing this situation is also a reason you are an excellent friend. Another thing a good friend would do is make sure the plane stays in shape with periodic exercise until he realizes the error in his ways. Take as long as you need to let him come around. That's what friends do.
Of course, you give it back to him. He will appreciate both it and you more and will now take care of it... especially if he watches this video.
Nice work sir.
I think it depends on what the story is with your friend and his use of it, meaning, is he going to actually use it or will it just lay around and get rusty again. If it's going to just sit around, then ask him if you can have it since he won't use it and you've already brought it back to life.
That's a keeper!
Well done samurai.
A worth while use of your time, the dollar isn't the only reward.
Excellent!
Beautiful
If your buddy let get in that condition in the first place he’ll only let it get in that condition again. Keep it man.
Gorgeous 😊
Absolutely give it back. First make a gorgeous little case for it, with compartments for the anti-rust oil you used, and the oiling cloth. Maybe a little dessicant box in it, too.
Make it a teachable moment.
What a treasure .... Love it ❤️👍🏽
I liked this one.
Give it back. But on behalf of all of us who wish we could afford such a great tool, your friend also deserves a sack tap. And film it please.
Great job!
Don’t give it back, he doesn’t deserve it.
Awesome.
good lord makes me cry.... real tears...
If he cried like it was a long lost love when you found it then yes give it back. If not well...
I found a Speare and Jackson carcass saw in the bushes. I know who it belongedto, and after I cleaned it up, I kept it. Its a 300 dollar beauty that I use often.
He doesn't deserve it back. Keep it and treat it well.
Send her to me! She'll have a loving home with plenty of attention and proper use. I would love to finally have a Lie Nielsen plane in my shop.
Let's get some furniture videos :D
A tool like that is meant to be both used and appreciated. Is your friend a woodworker? Was it an heirloom that was passed on to him? Was he the one that let it get to that state? Does he know what a gem he actually has? These are all important questions. I would take it back to him and show him what you did with it. Explain to him that a tool like that doesn't deserve to sit on a shelf forever. It's meant to be used, cared for and passed on to a loved one that would do the same. If it holds sentimental value to him then give it back, no matter what, along with an education on how to care for it. If he would never use and it doesn't mean anything to him, then ask if you can keep it for yourself or if you can make it a giveaway for your channel. Either way it would get used and cared for properly. Sorry for the long comment. Hope you actually made it to the end. :)
Shut the front door, I cant believe that's the same Plane! Good job man
