Get better is not get a 30 000 $ camera, Casey said that about creativity. You can spend less and make better vlogs, using a drone in monaco while you drive your lambo in example and paying the penalties for use that... This is cheaper and better, nobody will apreciate a daily vlog in 8k when the most of the people watch your vlogs on his mobile devices

Nothing changes except we get better st using a real camera and we are stoked to shoot more! 😃

Finally, someone that understands me. Casey inspired me to start vlogging and it upsets me when people blow money on expensive cameras for no reason. Ok you'll have better quality, but that doesn't make it creative. I spent $500 on my equipment and I make pretty awesome vlogs.

I have a RED camera, I've shot feature films and I also do some vlogging for my cooking channel. I think it's absolute madness vlogging with a RED camera, the SONY A7s II will do it all. But I must say that I truly admire Jon's dedication at going the extra mile and giving it 110%, that's the sort of commitment that separates the minority from the majority. Good luck Jon as you will need it, (Marcus too) and I look forward seeing awesome RED footage.
Since you own a red, I'm surprised you say you commend his dedication. I do not own one and have never operated cameras on any level higher than dslrs, but it would be my understanding that this camera would be too much a hindrance with bulk/workflow/color grading/worry about damage/theft/swapping redmags to actually expect much usability? I'm surprised you would even be able to admire what I would think would be just.... sort of stupid? Misguided? Dumb?
I admire people who push the envelope and get out of their comfort zone to achieve more. As for vlogging with a RED I personally couldn't think of a worse camera, I see that as short term only, storytelling is far more important than the gear you use. At least they will learn a lot in a short time, while others have their REDs sitting on the shelf 98 percent of the time.

How is he pushing it on a good way? A very expensive camera most can't afford is the same as Casey giving very relevant career advice? Or using his knowledge of filmmaking to tell a good story every day in a very creative way with a basic DSLR?
Not that i disagree I just would like to hear your justification for an 8k camera used to shoot films meant to be projected on huge screens is pushing vlogging...when 1% can afford to use the camera to vlog to begin with.

8K is 4 times 4K actually, it's mind blowing and TH-cam can't handle it yet. Wish I could see an 8K video but even my screen can't handle it.
You said Casey wanted something challenging and you went to buy a red camera to make it more challenging. Casey also said that camera doesn't matter, and he hated talking about camera gear. Yet every time I watch your vlogs it seems like you talk about the vlog, even tho you are doing a vlog. You have a cool camera but it feels like you are just throwing cool shots, talk about the vlog and no real story. The story is the most important part.

Jon has talked about this earlier, they get a RED cause they love camera gear, its not about "buying" yourself good content, and they know this.
Just because it's not done in Casey Neistat's way, it doesn't mean they do the wrong thing. Casey is a great vlogger but every people have their own vision of what they want to do. Casey's way is not the only right way.
8k is 4 times 4k :D 8k: 7680×4320= 33.177.600 4k: 4096 × 2160=8.847.360 :D

Looks good. Some over exposure problems and graininess but overall I like it. I'm sure in a few weeks you guys will get it dialed in. Can't wait for some epic slow mo shots in 4K, that is going to be amazing. Finally you can shoot in low light situations. Love the camo paint job!

Who cares, you guys will figure it out. No better way of doing it then DOING IT. Hopefully you got insurance on that bad boy. If so, lets mount it to a drone and take it to the next level in the air :) Not ideal for daily stuff but it would be a fun project.

Not sure what's available in Europe but I'm paying about $500/year to insure all the Leica stuff I have which is about $35K worth. Covers accidental damage as well as theft. I highly recommend it! Its called a personal article policy. Nice decision on the Inspire 2, that will do just fine.
*QUESTION: Can't you talk about why you're not considering a Panamera 4 E-Hybrid. It has four doors and surely must have a lot lower CO2-emissions than a FF or any Rolls. And why not also talk about why you're not considering a Tesla Models S.*

I have one question though, why go for for cine primes instead of a zoom like a Zeiss Compact CZ.2 ? More bulk but.. you can't really argue you aim at the most practical setup ever. ;-)

We decided to try the primes first and see how that felt. Agree that Zooms could be smarter but have yet to find one that we really like. The Sigma art 18-35 seems to be very popular so might have to check that out. As stated, this was day 1 and we have a ton of things to learn and test! ;-)
I have a Sigma 18-35 lens on my Canon, and its really great! You just have to buy the dock with it as well as it seems to need some calibration prior to using it properly.
Jon Olsson I have used the sigma art since summer and i only have good things to say about it. Razor sharp.
Sigma recently released cine version of the 18-35. it's identical optically speaking but 100% manual --> no dock. I think this is the version you need to get if you want to mount it on a red.
I ave been using the 18-35 Art for 3 years now, 24/7 on my camera, I love it! The very good thing is it's almost parfocal with very little breathing.
Nice Jon & Marcus! Always wanted to see a Red Camera used on Vlogs.. I understand a lot of people are like why such a expensive setup for TH-cam videos but at the end of the day this is #TeamOverKill and it is always awesome to see people doing different things. It is just like Casey being one of the first to use drones and time lapses and now Jon is the first to use a Red camera!

Cinema cam is just not ideal for vlogging! Bulky, not good in low light, super 35 cropped... I think u guys should really focus on the story telling side

ZOMG Cinema cam (like the Red) is not great in low light because it's usually used in a well lit environment. It's for professional use. Sensor size of most cinema cams is Super 35mm anyways, about the size of APSC

Leica Epic W 8K are you kidding me? It is a RED. Confirms again most people watching this have no clue about any of this gear. Really nice setup but I think it is not the ideal setup for the videos they do... the leica was the best middleground great auto focus good low light and beautiful colors

It's not the video, is your internet connection / PC. Streaming 4K takes a decent size pipe and a decent PC. Working sweet here on my 60MB fibre.

ISO noise has absolutely nothing to do with YT compression.
its either artificial film grain, or the compression algorithm. I think the Leica was better overall for what they are doing.

The best part about this video is the fact that I was beginning to realize how great the video quality of the iphone was. Then you watch the rest of the video and as soon as you switched back to the iphone, i was blown away by the huge difference in quality.

it probably is. good cameras aren't designed for low light conditions, as i understand it.
When you use a cinema camera.. you typically have time to light it.. its made for production
Josh Flori Good cameras are made for low light. They have absolutely massive sensors and are made to pick up detail in both the shadows and the highlights in perfect detail. There's a good chance that, at the time of filming, Jon and his crew didn't know much about picture settings like ISO and such. Cinema cameras perform very well in low light if you know how to properly adjust camera settings and edit in post.
He probably didn’t open the aperture. I garuntee you a red dragon or helium will destroy a mirrorless in low light

Pretty much noise in some scenes :/ why is that? I've heard that Reds are struggling in low light situations but it wasn't that dark...
Super dark in the garage, ISO 3200 so a bit surprised on the noise... Guess we will have to mount an A7S on the top of the RED for low light stuff... ;-)

You are meant to light for reds as they don't do that well in low light, they are designed for perfect lighting, not sure if the RED guys kept quite on that one or not, its just not designed for run and gun. The C300 MKii would have been a better choice as it is very very good in low light and has internal NDs so you can keep shooting at 1/50th of a second shutter speed in bright conditions without having to carry around a matt box and external NDS. Its a cinema/Doco camera which means you don't need a massive crew and lights to get good images as often. The downside is limited frame rates, but if that were a concern the Sony FS7 has pretty decent frame rates and gives the c300 MKii a run for its money in everything but skin tones.
You should look into it, the workflow will be much better for what you are doing and no one will notice the difference in the end. You also won't need 10 million hard drives to store 8K files that no one will be able to watch for the next 10 years anyway.
Also tell Markus to learn how to use scopes if he hasn't already. The waveform monitor can tell you if you are losing detail in the highlights or the shadows. I noticed quite a bit of over exposure which is often easily avoided using a waveform monitor to aid in exposure decisions.

props to marcus. just started working as a tv cameraman capturing live events. amazing cinematogarphy and editing skills to make a vlog seem to have a lot of prouduction value. however saying that shooting on a red and that too in monaco isnt just any average vlog.

Ascot Christie was thinking the same, a lot of people watch vlogs from a tablet or phone, i see no different and am watching from an amoled screen tablet, saw someone vlog with a Canon EOS80D and it looked higher quality!, must be loads cheaper too...4k is still niche..
RED is a film camera. Everything is manual. A red like theirs, with the basic attachments, would require 2-3 people to operate, one of them being a focus puller. that's the main reason it looks a bit grainy in some areas. . . ISO is also another culprit but over time though, markus should get used to it. Some RED rigs used in Hollywood could require upwards of 6 people to operate. . . hence why these guys truly are TEAM OVERKILL.

My prediction is that the "smaller camera" A7S you're looking to get will eventually become your main vlogging camera.
It can do everything the RED does minus the RAW and the ultra clear slow motion and is way more convenient to hold.
If one of your goals is to learn how to shoot manually then really ANY camera can help you achieve that.
In a few months however, I think you'll dig the GH5 for its awesome 10-bit color + superior in-body stabilization.
Why would you buy this camera for vlogs? You should work on your storytelling and make more interesting stuff cause your vlogs are all the same lately...a red camera is not ever gonna fix your storytelling abilities... i used to be a fan but this is just getting out of hand.

Dude for the content you are creating grab a 70D and use the money from that camera for great locations.... you are still a loooooooooooooooooooooooooong way to go before that camera makes any sense in your hands...
An A7SII is an awesome alternative ... you will have excellent image quality absolutely awesome lenses and STILL that one would be a hell of an overkill.

Canon is terrible for video at the moment. The sony A6300/A6500/A7SII far surpass the Canon 70D.
