Life is composed of both joy and pain. When I tolerated and accepted the pain, then life became easier. As Musashi teaches, tolerance and acceptance of pain is part of discipline.
I live like this, except for treating others with respect and kindness. I only treat people with respect and kindness that treat me with respect and kindness and for the ones that do not, neither do I. I also would advise to not be so quick to have compassion for others. Compassion for others that have no compassion for you can be destructive.
I always give my respect to others until I see a reason to withdraw it. Even then, I wouldn't disrespect them or treat them poorly. They're just conditioned different than I am.
“Today’s victory is over one’s self. Tomorrow’s victory is over lesser men.” I’m literally tattooing this on myself while listening to this.

Also sometimes we need to give in to overwhelming emotions and accept it in order to control it, understand it, then resolve it

This sounds like a very self centered attitude.
