The song has been playing in my head the last few days for some reason. Maybe I heard it used in a commercial or something. Anyway, without Cher, Republican Sonny would have just been a song writer for other people and we'd have never heard of him.
Au contraire, I don't think Cher would have been successful without Sonny. She had ambition and singing/acting talent but no drive and was rather pessimistic. Sonny was a songwriter, very driven and optimistic, and made connections. Even without Cher, I think Sonny would still have been successful but more as a composer/producer à la Phil Spector, like he originally wanted. He only joined Cher, his muse, as a duo because she was afraid to perform alone. At any rate, without Sonny, we would have never heard of Cher. And that's a fact.

I think someone else would have picked up Cher if Sonny hadn't. And, unless you're a close friend or blood relative of hers, there's no way you can know or prove the level of ambition she had. If Sonny had no ambition to go onstage, why did he continue to performing after they split? Why did he run for Congress? There are a lot of videos of him singing alone, but none worth 2 cents. Couldn,t believe it when an ex hells angel I know (Chuck Zeto) introduced me to her. He ended up marrying her. She is still beautiful and the voice is still OK! Jeff D.
Once anybody becomes a millionaire, they become weird. They are in a different reality than the common man so very few stay grounded. I didn’t like the way her outfits got too sexual as you couldn’t take your younger kids to see the performance & I also don’t agree that she’s going out with someone that’s less than half her age. Too weird to be with your Mother or Grandmother.

Say what you will about Sonny and Cher...sixties recordings were some of the best. This song and What Now My Love hit my teenage heart in a big way.
