    I am the co-founder of soylent.com and lucy.co, both of which were funded by Y Combinator (Summer 2012 and Winter 2018).
    I've been an entrepreneur for nearly a decade across multiple companies. I've done a lot of work in silicon valley, so that's mostly what I talk about. I've raised over 10 rounds of venture capital totaling over $100m in total funding.

    When I was 14, my friends and I were all using Skype to play League, and it boggled my mind there wasn't something better. I definitely expected something like Discord was only a matter of time, and we were so happy to start using it the moment we found out about it. Still use it almost everyday, about 6 years later.
    The product was desperately needed, and with the insane growth of the creator economy we see today, the importance of community building will only increase. Discord is still perfectly positioned to fulfill that need!
    Great video John!

      For sure, that’s a big part of the reason I moved to Silicon Valley in the first place. I didn’t study CS in college and didn’t go to an Ivy League school so I probably couldn’t have just waltzed into Google. Best decision ever IMO.

    • @CharlesWeill
      @CharlesWeill 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnCooganPlus Yeah I think Naval would agree that was a great decision too. I took the opposite route of going to Ivy League then Google, but in NYC, and the perspective I think is quite different. I often wonder what the counterfactual of moving to SV would have produced.

      @@CharlesWeill the good thing is that it’s never too late to start a company. David Duffield was 64 when he started WorkDay and the company is worth $60 billion dollars now! I believe there is actually one key factor that got completely left out. Every person I know that switched from teamspeak to discord did so because it's free. Sure it is not the the highest on the list but when it comes to building things, especially things like communities that are constantly changing, cost to try something new is a huge road block. The quality of discord is far higher than their competitors and they made it free, if it hadn't been free, it would have never made it to where it is now, even with the far better quality.

      He's in bed with the game devs probably... give them the first scoop of whats-what and they get a leg-up against the competition (ppl say they love Warzone or something, make a carbon-copy competitor--ppl say they h8 it, make something tangential/opposite/improved).
      Keep in mind the service is FREE. This means You are the product, yes... YOU! Paying for the perks is akin to paying for Reddit Gold or something similar. It is just a way to show support, even though the service is still free to use plainly, anyhow.
      Discord is the tool you use to sell 'info'. Maybe not really information about you, but w/ even ~100mil semi-active users, it is equivalent to casting votes for a medium size nation that doesn't really exist (we are talking a Japan/Mexico/Russia sized population). They see it all on the other end. Everything!

      It's actually mainly the so-called "silicon valley startup model". By being able to constantly show investors your company is growing, they will keep investing. Obviously this can't go on forever and the growth will plateau. We are already seeing signs that they are in the process of this happening by them introducing, removing or changing things in a way that could indicate a more sustainable model without huge investments coming in regularly, but time will tell exactly how they will manage. They will then indeed have to make *you* the product (even more than they might already) or they will have even more options or features behind a paywall.

    Top 1-10 Universities is 35% of founders meaning 3.5% per university...
    Top 11-100 Universities is 30% so 0.333% per university
    100+ is 35% but the pool contains 1000s of universities so it is very small fraction of the previous 2 per universities
    So yeah the top 10 universities produce a lot of the founders... the comparison only looks equal because your including so many more universities in the pool.
    More universities = more chances the pool will produce a founder...

      100%. The key to Discord is to disable all notifications as soon as you join a server. I'll join a server and then mute it, and suppress all @mentions (including @everyone and @here). Then I just check the channels when I'm interested and have free time. You can leave notifications on if you're in a server with like 5 friends. If it's a big community, you have to disable everything or it will be too crazy.

    As a parent I hate Discord. It’s caused so many arguments between my 13 year old son and me. I don’t let him use it because it effectively has no parental controls. I know there are people that would say you should trust your kid. Well, I trust with limits but there are no limits with Discord. My router can for the most part block the age inappropriate content on the web but Discord is the cheat code to the worst content on the internet. I understand there are good things about Discord but since I have no control over the bad things I just have to block it outright and have constant arguments about it.

      All the channels on Discord, that have inappropiate (NSFW) content are marked as NSFW and you get a warning that the content is indeed NSFW before you enter the channel, it`s a rule that every server has to follow to not get terminated, so this is really not the Discord`s fault. Your child can just as easily look up inappropiate content elsewhere, you have to have an honest talk with him and explain things instead.

    How does that data compare to the the type of degrees that lead to a longer-lasting company?
    Whose to say those 40% with a bachelors made it past 2-5 years vs ceos who’ve made to 10+ years with a different degree?

    I don’t use Discord. I use Guilded instead of Discord. Guilded is like Discord but better because Guilded has more features and is 100% free. Many people who use Guilded think that Guilded is better than Discord. I too think Guilded is better than Discord.

    • @LJ-np3gc
      @LJ-np3gc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Guilded sucks. It is just a big company with unlimited funds with people who don't what they're doing they just keep copying discord and come up with barely any original designs seriously I downloaded the app once and it is just a sad excuse for a chatting app.

    • @Ryhr
      @Ryhr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LJ-np3gc They didn't copy Discord. Sure the UI might look like Discord's but that's to help if someone wants to switch from Discord to Guilded. Guilded has features that Discord does not. There are channel types that Discord does not have. You can have unlimited emotes for your server and you can use them on other servers all for free. You can put a poll or a form into the chat. You can have your own profile feed and post stuff there and other people can be able to post stuff on your own profile if you want them to. If you don't want then to, then, you can change that in the privacy section of your settings.

    While I use Discord on regular basis and clearly it's best on the market for something that popular I have quite a few issues with it.
    It's annoying to find and invite friends. You can't just look for servers, you gotta have link. Notification system is a mess. It doesn't keep history of my messages if I message someone who is not on my friend list. It's still pretty restrictive when it comes to what you can do with servers. Cool emotes locked behind Nitro. ._. Strange UI bugs when interface to close it just dissapears when I open it on top of game in windowed fullscreen mode.

    • @JohnCooganPlus
      @JohnCooganPlus  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, it’s for sure not perfect. It’s definitely a little weird that they haven’t nailed the general one-to-one chat angle. It’s always super hard to find people and quickly switch to personal conversations.

    • @Darkempire-ef6zc

      You can actually find servers that are public only on pc tho the others I agree

    • @X_irtz
      @X_irtz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are websites dedicated to finding specific servers, if the server owner has put them on there. Notifications can be annoying, but they are manageable, you can turn off mentions pretty easily for any of the servers or channels. It has always kept the message history for me no matter if the person is or isn`t on my friends list, unless that person himself deletes their messages, not sure what this is about. Restrictive? With all the bot options, channel settings etc. i would say there`s quite a bit you can do to your server, i myself have managed a server before. Discord is a business after all, they have to have some sort of a paywall, you cannot expect everything in a free app, to actually be free. Really the only thing i can agree on is the occasional bugs whenever i am browsing Discord and Discord sucks on mobile platform, so they have to improve it there, it`s really laggy and unresponsive on the mobile end of things.
