  • West Virginia University made headlines in the world of higher education this year when it announced it was making major cuts to some academic programs and faculty. There's concern about whether other public universities may follow suit. Special correspondent Hari Sreenivasan has reports for our series, Rethinking College.
Correction: In this segment, we referred to the Morrill Act of 1882. The law was passed in 1862. We also reported that other land-grant universities, including the University of Utah, are making changes and cuts similar to West Virginia University. We attributed that to Lisa Corrigan, a professor of communications at the University of Arkansas, who studies these issues.
The University of Utah is not considering similar cuts. It is also not a land-grant university. Other land-grant schools, including Texas A&M, the University of Alaska and Iowa State, have either made similar cuts to programs or are considering doing so. We regret the errors.
