NEWS ABOUT THE KALBELYIAS in 2023:
Recently, in August of 2023,, I returned with a friend to Rajasthan to look for the group of Kalbelyias featured in this video shot in Pushkar twenty years ago.
By a series of synchronicities, we found them. They show me how their life is now. I was struck by the profound changes that time had brought since I filmed them two decades ago.
They are now married with children, struggling with the weight of poverty and the overwhelming aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The government's enforced shutdown had devastated their means of earning a living, leaving them in desperate need of help and support.
I decided that all the proceeds of the videos about them are going to help their community in Pushkar directly by sending moneygrams. Let us know if anyone can suggest how to help them more in different way ! We appreciate your support!
This short video is dedicated to the Kalbelya Gypsies from Rajasthan who respond to poverty with dance, music, wit, courage, and dignity. Welcome to leave your comments.
The Kalbeliyas are a nomadic cast from the desert in Rajasthan, INDIA. They are known for their Music, Dance, and Snake Charmer's talents. The traditional occupation of the KALBELIAS was to catch snakes and train them to dance to the sound of the PUNGI (a wind instrument), for which they are also called SAPERA. Today, with the prohibition of hunting for snakes in India, this charismatic caste survives mostly as dancers, musicians, and singers. The dancers dressed in traditional black swirling skirts and dance to the accompaniment of pungi - the wooden instrument of the Snake Charmers. Some Kalbelyas still trade the medicinal snake's venom for income. Kalbelia women compose songs, known as the best dancers of the Thar desert.

I've always thought they were beautiful people, makes me want to move there for the culture and leave all of this "freedom" of the US behind for good.
I took a DNA test and found out I have Romani gypsy ancestry, upon further analysis my markers are related to Rajasthani and Punjabi peoples…my family is from Spain Portugal France Greece and Italy
Yes romanis are everywhere. Romanis are actually from dessert region in india, previously there was no separate states. U can say rajasthan, gujarat, haryana, MP, punjab share same roots. Same people or dna, basically all north indians are same or similar. And flamenco and belly dancing has roots from rajasthani dance, if u come here in rajasthani and see the culture, u will be shocked to see similarities. Romani people are from not just banjara (gypsy) community, but also from Gurjar/Gujjar , chauhan, etc. Communities in rajasthan too

My people are Romani/Sinti Gypsies. These are our cousins as our people started leaving India almost 1,500 years ago. Everything familiar I too am dancer and singer..it's like flying!! my clan are musicians. What pride♥️

@Money-printers you are rude as well as wrong. We left India long before the coming of Islam. And genetic studies have shown that we have 92% similarity with other North Indians. What's more, many Roma lineages, including my own family, share the Jatt Glaucoma Mutation with the Punjabi Jatts. AND we speak a language that is close enough to Punjabi that with a little bit of effort I can hold a conversation in Romani with my Punjabi friends. So stop being a bulaki-xev.

I suggest you check out the Mendizabal et al (2012) genetic study which will confirm how closely related we are to Punjabis. You think I'll discard the evidence of a five year genetic study (in which some of my relatives participated) and my own decade of studying medical genetics because of what some totally unqualified nationalist loon says on a TH-cam video? If you do then you're an even bigger idiot than I thought. The Austronesian Adivasi type are NOT the only "real Indians". You clearly don't even know where our endonym " Roma " comes from. Oh, and if Roma are "not real Indians" then neither can Kalbelia be, since we are closely related in both genetics and culture. And for that matter I have a friend who's Kalbelia, if I lined her up with me, my sister and a couple of other relatives and challenged you to pick out the one who wasn't a member of my family you wouldn't be able to do it (in fact my Kalbelia friend looks so much like a young version of my mother that it's spooky).
Then of course there's the linguistic evidence. My PhD is in Indian languages. You can try arguing if you really want to but you'll just make yourself look stupid so I advise you not to.
I also repeat that my ancestors left India BEFORE the first Muslim incursions so how could we possibly be descendants of the invaders? You really are daft, like all extremists/nationalists.

These dances are the best I have ever seen. They are intriguing and interesting. Better than African or American dancing. This is just my opinion.
