OLD Leather Smith here, interesting Daniel. Being OLD I have always put my line down the center and worked from there, I will have 2 try it this way. Since I do a lot with POLICE ALL THERE LEATHER EQUIPMENT IS DONE IN BASKRT WEAVE, so it won't be long 4 me 2 try this. Thanks 4 teaching this old dog new tricks. God's Blessings ✝️ 🥎 🙃
Another tip that I’ve learned the hard way over time is to make sure that I account for some amount of wandering when I punch the stamp down. This effect increases with the thickness of the leather (along with how wet it is). If the leather is very thick or very wet, it tends to “smoosh” a little more and the head of the stamp tends to move just a fraction or a fraction of an inch versus where I thought it would be when it lightly lined it up before striking it. These little movements compound if you’re not careful, and the next thing you know, your line is all kinds of canted.
Nice tip, I use a small 4" square to line up my stitching holes from one edge of the belt to the other edge. Because the ruler slides on the body of the square I can also use it to keep the slot punch orthogonal and centered to the work. For patterns where I need 30º or 60º I will use my wife's quilting templates. Thanks for sharing.
Great tips! To you have any tricks for keeping other styles of basket weaves or interlocking stamps from drifting? I have a few diamond shaped ones that resemble buttoned upholstery and one that is more circular with three interlocking sides (that one is a Weaver stamp that I love). I always stress about those and luckily, any hiccups have occurred on the back sides, lol. Again, great video and tips!
When you make something like this. As a demo piece for a video. What do you do with it? Do you put it to one side and save for a strap for another project?
Great effect using the stamp for the basket weave on leather 👌 but, I have a question for you, could this tool be used on wood ?? and could the same effect be achieved ???. Cheers Les. Not seen leather stamping before on here, looks pretty cool.
