We called them Communion Assistance in the former LCA, (NOW ELCA) CONGREGATION and the office was held by various people serving in the service on the Altar (namely, the acolytes, crucifer, Cantor, and Assisting Minister/Worship Leader, sometimes the Lector.) served in the various "lesser office positions" within the office of the Ministry.
Watching this while drinking me morning coffee from a non-Lutheran mug. Feeling a little less Lutheran 😆 but seriously...isn't the LCMS offering (through Concordia) a study course for deacons? Like a degree? Cheers from New Zealand, the Confessional Lutheran wasteland
In the US, the LCMS church did away with deacons because they saw too many of them acting in the called role of pastor. This was generally a result of a small congregation not being able to call a pastor. They were offered the opportunity for additional study to become a Specific Ministry Pastor (SMP). With this additional education they were allowed to be called by a specific single congregation.
@askthepastor....i know it exists that women have served as elders, but it's rare, as I've yet to see it. It's more common anymore in the Roman Church to find women distributing the Lord's Supper than even some ELCA congregations!!
Saying an elder or deacon is a" humanly instituted office" is clearly, unequivocally unbiblical. I Timothy 3 sets up elders and deacons. Furthermore Elders, pastors, overseers in the Bible describe the same office - Titius 1:5&7, Acts 20:17 & 28, I Peter 5:2
We in SEAVC(Slovenská Evanjelicka Augsbuskeho Význania Cirkev ;Slovak Evangelical of Augsburg Confession Church) in Serbia have Presbyters, Friars(farári; pastors), Seniors and a Bishop. Presbyters are common people; Friars are pastors or parish priests; Seniors are some way of elders and a Bishop is person who represents the Church among other Lutheran Churches or any other Church. So, is presbyter same as elder or deacon?

I’ve been wishing to one day be accepted in that role in my local church. The path is still long.
