I remember I taped this back in September '85 and actually wore the tape out on rewind as I kept replaying from when Penn is killed in the elevator to Crockett running down the street in NY. Jan Hammer was such a genius with music mixes and finding tracks, creating original mixes. The song that is playing when the two hitmen are in the street and the GMC truck is honking while looking for Tubbs is so dope. All these years later this whole sequence still holds up. "Too much excitement." Yeah, Rico you guys gave us a lot of excitement, especially these first two seasons. Such a classic show!!!!! Update: Many thanks to a poster below who identified this song as 'Rubbermiro' by Liquid Liquid.
I thought that The Prodigal Son wasn't going to be good because it wasn't filmed in Miami... Boy was I wrong! It's two part episode played out like a mini movie and was one of the best episodes of the entire series! Julian Beck's speech alone puts this episode on top!
@@isaachaze1 We had a Betamax too!! We couldn't get it to record worth a shit so you were lucky! LOL :-) But yeah The Prodigal Son, Out Where The Buses Don't Run, and Smuggler's Blues were my favorite episodes of Season 2 :-)
@paulbrown357 "He was my partner. Do you understand? You understand? Yeah." Out Where The Buses Don't Run was a fantastic episode that I saw when it first aired waaaaay back in 1985 :-)
I loved it when they traveled out of Miami. Gave the show a unique feel, because many procedurals generally stay in the city they're set in. This show set the bar for future TV and pop culture in endless ways, but it sadly feels like a forgotten classic.
Cody Smith not only travelling outside of Miami was so special for the show but also that many of the scenes were filmed outside of the studio so the viewers could enjoy beautiful Miami as well. That's what made it so special to me. In later cop shows like CSI Miami etc. they do 90% of the filming inside the studio so you see nothing of beautiful Florida at all.
Miami Vice definitely set the bar higher. Show runners wanted every episode to look and feel like a movie that you go to the cinema to watch. The Sopranos picked it up from there and then, Breaking Bad afterwards. I wonder what's next, but I feel like there's not gonna be something on the caliber of these series for a very long while.
Even just the first part of it within the apartment was high octane and intense. So well orchestrated. It was crazy how they had to get running the hell out of there when the elevator assassin's powerful machine gun started really shredding the place up.
I was military when MV came out never missed one if we were played or trading and I'd miss it I'd record it on my VCR and still have those tapes Lol. I have the DVD set now
So messed up when Jimmy's apartment elevator slides open revealing him as he is and then Crockett calls Rico's name in a disturbed tone. Rico has a calm expression and tone in contrast because he doesn't see what Crockett sees. So well done.
Dude, if I had some cash I would throw it your way. I thought this was an original mix by Jan Hammer all these years and have been looking for it. I remember taping this in Sept 1985 and playing the hell out of the tape as this track was playing in the background. I just found it on Apple Music and downloaded it. Many thanks!!!!!
A great start to the second season. In New York? Awesome. And then it was pretty much all down hill from here. If memory serves, the second season got weird. Zombies?
Seasons 1-3 were the stellar of the series. Season 4-5 got very strange. 1. The network moved the timeslot to 9pm to compete with Dallas. Replaced by an ill faded 60's based crime show "Crime Story". The ratings suffered a bit. Micheal Mann went on to work with Crime Story and left Miami Vice alone.
Season 3 was the best in my opinion. It had some real stuff happen . Red Tape/Forgive Us Our Debts/ The Good Collar/ El Viejo/ Streetwise/Duty & Honor/ When Irish Eyes are Crying/Down For The Count part 1 and 2. Season 2 was good too . Prodigal Son/Sons & Lovers/Yankee Dollar/Buddies. Greatest cop show ever. I put New York Undercover and Chicago PD as great too. Had real endings and storylines. Miami Vice actually used real cases as the backdrop for the episodes
Season 4 is when it went to pot. 3 was still pretty good even if the stories started getting darker around that time. I about nearly quit watching though with Season 4. Holy crap that was bad.
Yep. This was the second season premiere. Also had the awesome Glenn Frey song "You Belong To The City" playing during a montage of Crockett walking the streets of NYC at night as well.
I have studied this episode so much, I used it as the template for a feature film I am currently developing. I even named one of the main characters "Maggie" (who was played by Susan Hess in this episode). See teaser of my film here : th-cam.com/video/HrWu2HFqpbk/w-d-xo.html
I was in college at the time as a broadcasting/film student when this aired. That music mix that is playing as Crockett & Tubbs are running from the hitmen has stayed in my mind for over thirty years. Hammer was a genius. Heck, this show in its first seasons was so fresh. The action, the shootouts, cars, ladies, fashion, just 80s at its best. The Prodigal Son is pure genius. Starsky-Paul Michael Glaser did a helluva job directing.
love Miami Vice, so good. Also love how cheesy 80s movies and TV series look compared to today. In this scene they had 1911's, Uzi's, shotguns, discharged about 60 rounds and nobody got shot! Lol. They're terrible marksmen.
If this shootout were real at all, Tubbs would have been dead TWICE. He was in the direct line of uninterrupted fire, and would have received fatal shots to the head and torso at 1:49, and again at 2:18, even if the crooks were inaccurate marksmen.
Err, umm, it's called A) Dramatic License; B) Hollyweird; and C) The Magic Negro... take your pick... also note the *totally bloodLESS* wounded hitman @3:34, and how he magically dies--noiselessly--in Tubbs' arms... _rolleyes_
At the end of Part 1 Prodigal Son Crockett and Tubbs are roughed up by the NYPD standing in front of the Former Moon Dance Diner off 6th Av and Grand St. If you watch the scene closely you see passersby recognize the actors and point them out.
I think the one commentor is wrong, this upload is not the full scene, there is a few seconds cut out. I specifically remember when Crocket is being chased the one part where the camera is going along side of him while he is running past the taxis (keeping up) was also done with the two hit men running after him, which was cut out.
These men were the Truth they brought life to the series. I want my 80's back
Excellent example of why Miami Vice is the best series of all time.
Your comment has exceeded all, but nothing more than exceptional brilliance!
@@rell6028 Thank you.
Yes i agree i have season's 1 & 2 on dvd my favorite best season's of the series

The absolute pinnacle of popular culture on this planet.

One of the best eps for sure. I remember I ordered a pepperoni pizza and watched it when it aired. My parents got me a beta vcr so I could record MV
Turns out The Prodigal Son was like a mini movie. What a great introduction to season 2.
By far the best episode of the show. A Two Hour Gem.

My Favorite Miami Vice Episode All Time And It Was Like A Movie

The Prodigal Son,filmed in NYC,1985
I was a kid back then but knight rider was my fav in 85.
@@thedarkknightman6150 As someone who now drives a 2000 Trans Am, I hated the 80s Trans Am and that era's US made cars.
the greatest shootout from my favorite MIAMI VICE episode (movie)
Even just the first part of it within the apartment was high octane and intense. So well orchestrated. It was crazy how they had to get running the hell out of there when the elevator assassin's powerful machine gun started really shredding the place up.
Yeah, I liked it too. And the chase music.
That is the most amazingly awesome ‘80s loft space I’ve ever seen ... And they shoot it the fuck up ... 😫
Great clip!!!! Love it.
And playing You Belong to The City while Crockett walked alone at night was great
That was a good shoot. Out scene in New York city with the show
That’s the crossroads of Broadway in front of Lincoln Center in the end of the scene.
ToniKoo
That’s a lot of running from lower Manhattan all the way up to 66 Street and Broadway
Sean Peterson not for Crockett, my dude
I can hear the POWER coming down on us.
My BEST FRIENDS for 35+ years.. Crockette and Tubbs I remember being in NYC during that year
The guy on the left in the elevator looks exactly like the guy that shot Tubbs brother…..in the pilot.
man what an action on a sunny day ..only in miami vice
Tubbs Hit it!!!!!!!
I was military when MV came out never missed one if we were played or trading and I'd miss it I'd record it on my VCR and still have those tapes Lol. I have the DVD set now
Tubbs the man!!!
And the set designers were pastel CRAZY !!
It was Michael Mann’s edict for the show; NO EARTH TONES WHATSOEVER.
So messed up when Jimmy's apartment elevator slides open revealing him as he is and then Crockett calls Rico's name in a disturbed tone. Rico has a calm expression and tone in contrast because he doesn't see what Crockett sees. So well done.
Yes! I noticed that too
The Best Show Ever It is on Tubi miami vice minus the Evan Episode
Sonny went into hyper drive across the intersection !
Nice Caddy
Great song - Rubbermiro by Liquid Liquid.
Tnx mate. Was reading the comments to look for the song

ソニィが柱の左側から発砲しているとき、ちゃんと左手で持っているんだよね。そういうところにリアリティを感じる。

Best shootout of the whole series
I've always referred to it as a "designer shoot-out."
Im wondering could this be the LOFT now ised for fil8mg the precinct on SVU
Anyone else notice the elevator shooter is the same guy who murdered Tubbs' brother?
He was, thank you.
3.23 what street is that
So art deco!
Rivas??! Hits to neat boy them dudes hit that door hard sonny laying down cover fire to much excitement lol

@Samson Crossword The S-2 ep. you're referring to is Tale Of The Goat.
4:20 rong site of the car for the two stuntmen - ending scene

Hallway to clean for NYC.
And NOT a single red brick wall in sight...even in NYC 🤷♂️

Funny how all those people walking by that building couldn't hear any of the shooting going on. Lol
No red brick buildings or walls in this series...even during this 2-parter filmed in NYC...where red brick buildings exist?
He who fights and runs away.....

This was great. But, why the heck not show Sonny needing to pause and replace the magazine? It would have added so much more realism.
When they go to new york city with penn and teller. Pam Grier was in this. Prodigal Son?
Just Penn was in this episode. Teller didn't appear until the ep. Like A Hurricane (S-4.)
Yes, Pam Grier (Valerie) is in this episode, Prodigal Son.
That shotgun next to useless 😑😑
3.54 hammy acting
