  • Today we'll unbox and review the Tecsun DR-920C portable multi-band analog receiver.
This radio is much like its Tecsun cousins (the R909 and R9012) in that it is an analog tuner (no DSP chip); but the 920C has a digital frequency counter display. This allows you to be more certain what frequency you're picking up.
We'll look at some of its features, then do a quick, pre-dawn scan of the AM (medium wave) band.

Nice review. I really like this radio. MW is not relevant here in France but on SW bands it's a very, very decent performer. On par with my more expensive Sihuadon R-108 or even better. The surprisingly accurate digital frequency display is a big plus. Its analog scale counterparts R-9012 and R-909 have tuning scales that are both imprecise and off by quite a margin. So you can't really know what you're listening to.
My only gripe is that the tuning button is really stiff and it gets uncomfortable with time.

I agree about the little tuning knob; uncomfortable to use for a long listening session.
      Thanks, Alain!

I have a Lextronic E1100, which is a rebranded Tecsun DR-920. So far, the only differences I know of between the older DR-920 and the DR-920C are that the DR-920C has a power switch on the right side, where mine has a Radio / Buzzer switch for the alarm. My two large buttons on the front are LIGHT/SNOOZE and POWER/SLEEP. BTW, I got an English language manual with mine (which says nothing about the external power supply charging the battery) -- but yours is newer.
The 920 is a single-conversion superheterodyne radio and as such it's prone to images 455 kHz off the main signal. It also drifts off frequency.
You got some good results in the video.

TH-cam ate my comment earlier, maybe because I mentioned a certain Chinese website that you mentioned in the video. The spam filters are a bit too aggressive.

Looks like this one passes muster. Anyways, I used to buy on there when I was more into hobbyist electronics. If I say any more I'll probably get filtered. Appreciated the comparison of digital and analog tuning.

Thanks for posting this, there are very few YT videos on the Tecsun DR-920C.
I almost bought one back in October last year for a family member but chose the analog R-909 instead.
Personally I would steer clear of radios that have that tiny sliding switch to select the various bands. From my past experience, the selectir switch is always the first to show problems. It's very susceptible to dirt ingress and also it's very difficult to choose the desired shortwave band by feel.
The Tecsun PL-310ET is about the same price point as the DR-920C and offers 5 bandwidth options. I had one briefly - really liked it but was forced to return the unit as it had AGC calibration issues from the factory. The AGC would increase and decrease the volume rapidly on a strong signal broadcast and it became practically unbearable to listen for more than a few minutes.
In the end I bought a Sihuadon R-108 to replace the PL-310ET - the R-108 didn't have AGC pumping issues but it's a bit of a battery guzzler on the Nokia BL-5C battery (the same type used by the PL-330). I think it's due to the high fidelity 3-watt, dual cone speaker that Sihuadon/Radiwow uses but R-108's audio (especially on FM) really blows my PL-330 and my former PL-310ET out of the water. 📻❤️

I can totally see that sliding selector being a weak point. And you're right about it being hard to see. On my R9012 I put a dab of red paint in that little hole on the slider, which is supposed to point to which band you're on. Did that help? Not at all.
I find it impossible to tell the position by seeing. On this 920C I just slide it to the left all the way, then count clicks as I slide it right. Kind of like putting an automatic transmission in gear; count the stops and I know where I'm at!
      Thanks for commenting!

@@ma-mo Glad to know that I'm not the only one who feels the slide action band selector switch is too fiddly to operate. 😏
The DR-920C is basically an update of the much older R-920C with an analog dial and fitted with an LCD display. Unlike your PL-330, I don't think this radio is equipped with a DSP chip. It's just an analog tuner with a digital frequency readout.
I should think selecting the right SW band wouldn't be much of a chore compared to the R-9012 as the digital display changes along with the band selector switch. On an analog dial receiver like the R-909, I have to memorize the number of clicks or detents from left to right (or vice versa) the individual detents become more difficult to distinguish as the sliding contact point succumbs to wear and tear. 😐
Tecsun dispenses with the cheaply made sliding switch for its all digital receivers, including the inexpensive PL-310ET and the PL-380. Its top end analog R-9700DX model uses a sliding band selection switch though.
Keep up the good work, hope to see you demonstrate your DR-920C on shortwave in a future video! 📰👍🏼
