  • With the 300 PRC shooting good groups at 220 yards I was keen to explore the Aorangi ranges a little more in search for a deer. Comes along and enjoy.

Great vid Stan. Hunted that circuit many times over the last few years. Area gets absolutely thrashed, and many guys using those thermal gadgets in that area now. Definately noted the shyness and lack of animals more recently with a number of long range shooters profiling the area on youtube.

Thanks. Yea, thermals, I've heard that. I felt bad enough getting into long-range stuff, but thermals are next level weird....hungry people, I guess.

I used to go that way when I worked down there a few beers ago, always 50/50 chance of a deer, few fallow there now makes things interesting, good vid mate

Great video. I hunt this area a lot, it’s hit hard and like you said lots of hungry guys with thermals, and now showcasing it on TH-cam. You really have to spend a lot of time and put in many k’s to find the honey holes.

Hmm OK. Quads and thermals. Best to stick to bush hunting then in the Aorangis. Thanks

The Cotrill always comes home with freezer fillers from there!

Good video mate. I enjoyed the view of the landscape. Better luck next time. Also, I am interested to see how your Howa 300 PRC performs on game.

Deer well trained in there by hunters maybe? How abrasion resistant is the dyneema? I winced when saw it on the ground. Great footage by the way. Kinda has a a cool colour filter effect?

Or I'm out of practice 🤔. Dyneema is tough, crazy tough. When it punctures it doesn't tare, you just patch it. Custom filter, yea...secret

Mean filter. Retro. I think you boys down in Welly have too much choice for hunting! The deer are there. Don't give up. Think where would they be if they are under pressure. And get a dog. 😂

Thanks Stan, I think you have just saved me a few miles walking. I was thinking of doing that loop but will try something else. Out of interest, how long did it take to get to Mt Ross? Cheers

Haha I see. Not long but I glassed a lot along the way. I got to the carpark at 3pm and set camp up at 6:00pm ish. Walking time was under 2 hours if your going at a good pace.

Ive glassed deer from the carpark there at midday once and even saw a deer from the main track to sutherlands at 4pm this saturday but she disappeared before i got the rifle ready. Theres plenty of deer there but they are heavily hunted.

@hardantlerhunting9691 I tend to head in after it's been raining(since I don't have work when the sheep are wet) so I think it's a good time to catch deer out drying off in the sun.

There’s deer in there Stan. Don’t give in. I think you may have covered to much country. We just glass, glass and glass in there, change the angles from time to time and never give in! I’m 100% sure that you walked past deer. 😊

In pressured areas like this - how many deer do you pick up during the day ? I see animals in the morning but they evaporate back into the bush pretty quickly after sunrise.
      Cheers!
