    Where I come from, reciting people’s poems is very, very common. It’s a way to honor the writer/creator of that piece. You’d start off by saying something like, “My Honest Poem by Rudy Francisco,” then you proceed to recite it. The artist always, always gets the credit.
    So, I don’t agree with the thought that people should go write their own poetry. Why? Because some people are very gifted with delivering a piece of poetry, but cannot write to save their lives. Why deprive someone of that gift and joy of recitation when they could present your work, give you your props, and bring the recognition back to you?
