I was there, it was hardly a riot but the MSM have always loved a bit of hyperbole, Stainrod and Curran clashed, Curran got sent off, then some debris from that dodgy crumbling Oldham away end terrace was thrown on the pitch and a group of Wednesday fans ripped down some hoarding at the other end of the ground, Charlton came on to plead with fans to stop throwing stuff and was ignored, just as he was at Hillsborough when he tried to stop the snowballs being thrown at Pat Jennings in the 1979 cup match v Arsenal, not much else to say about the incident other than the ref stopped the match for half an hour. The consequences were a 4 match away travel ban for Wednesday fans and no standing at Hillsborough for 4 matches, but some Wednesday fans did go to those 4 away games anyway.

I was there with my dad at the game, but I was only 12 years old at the time, so I can’t remember much, but your memory of the incident is much better than mine. Like you say the media probably blew it up out of all proportion. It’s really good to hear your perspective on it though.

@@andyforshortbutnotforlong5351 The stone throwing was the worst of it and the ref justifiably stopped the game, a small line of police stood across the pitch which made them become a target, but the stone throwing was generally quite sparse considering the number of away fans and the amount of debris available on the terrace, it was stupidity and hooliganism but certainly not bad enough to be interpreted as a riot in my opinion. It was a bad day all round, our football special train was late to Oldham so we missed the start, the match had a 30 minute hold up and Wednesday lost!

@@SheffMick I remember there was fences up back then, but I seem to recall Wednesday fans climbing over them. I share your opinion, that it was more of a disturbance than a riot. I appreciate your reply, I’m really interested in your memories of the day. Sheffield Wednesday had just been promoted back to Division Two and have always had great support both home and away. Did Jack Charlton resign and was he replaced by Howard Wilkinson soon after, can you remember Mick?

I was there, i remember it well, and i clearly remember Simon Stainrod's involvement in getting T.C. sent off. I don't know what we were thinking when we signed Stainrod for Wednesday.

Stainrod being a former Sheffield United player made the Wednesday fans more incensed.
