I love the facial expressions John made while reading the wife's letters. Perfectly captured the "sad British lady from a historical drama" aesthetic.
ngl the abundance of notes seem like kinda a step back for puppet combo. I feel like this could've told a decently compelling story without needing to fall back on long monologues about the great war and zealots
Coulda used some gore too.
Atleast it's optional to read the notes. Not to suck their dicks too, but if it was obligatory to read all of that, then I think it would be a bad choice.
Edit: my opnion changed, if they removed all the notes from the scientist's wife, we would have know the entire plot with less monologue and the game would build up faster :l, because the notes from the mad scientist pretty much just tells us again all that crap his wife was talking about.
I think they could have been a LOT shorter.
It's something that works better when playing the game rather than watching a video on it.
They are probably trying to be authentic, because that's how Edwardian, or people grew up with Victorian education would wright, a bunch of redundant words in modern eyes.
Gotta say, I do really like Margaret. Would happily spend a much longer game with a skeptical, rifle-wielding WWI-era lady in a cute dress and flats.

Puppet Combo is hands down my favorite game creators, i love the 90's appeal, the old vhs look the color the pixels.

It wasn't a bad game, but I feel like there are so many other Puppet Combo games that should get the spotlight on those gaming sites.
Too much reading... annoying controls/camera angles... lots of spelling/grammatical errors. "Eh" jump scares. And the auto-aim was buggy. I just feel like people who have never played a Puppet Combo game will try this and not want to play anymore of their games because of the issues this game has...
Fixed camera angles with tank controls has always been a conscious design decision. Look it up.
@@Vulgarth1 I never said it wasn't. I've played Silent Hill and Resident Evil. What I'm saying, and as John pointed out several times in the video, is that the controls and camera messed up the immersion and only frustrated the player.

@Alvare Gomez oh, I see what you mean. I like playing scenarios in games with characters walking and running like they're in a movie (at least when not during gameplay, but even that has its exceptions).

You know... For a classic survival horror throwback, I feel like this game was missing a few key features that those games used to have. In no particular order:
- The ability to save your progress at a given object (think of the typewriter in RE)
- The ability to carry items; Being able to carry health-items would have especially helped negate a lot of frustration, I think
- The player character interactions; A lot of these old survival horror games were kind of like point and click games, in that your character would give descriptions of various items in the game-world. This game barely had any of the sorts, which leaves a lot of the world-building up to the notes. Oh and speaking of notes: a lot of them need proper paragraphs, because I don't think anybody enjoys reading walls of text like that.
On a related note: this game featured a lot of chasing towards the end, which is not suitable for this type of game. I know it's easy to blame this on the fixed camera angles, but I feel like it's the designer's job to build the game around its "limitations". I know you can also point to classic survival horror games that had them, but I think we can all agree that those parts were not exactly the highlight back then either.
I actually really liked how the game started and I was excited to see where it was building up to. Too bad it wasn't building up to anything interesting... I'm honestly a little bit sick of those Amnesia-ish stories in horror games, you know the ones I mean: "Man experiments on people in his basement / dungeon, oopsies something and 'accidentally' creates a monster". I think this game had the most potential of all the Puppet Combo games I've seen, because it's clear that they put a lot of effort into it, whereas I always thought the previous games were cool, but a little bit rushed (not hating on them; that's just how they come across to me).
A puppet combo game and johns voice acting is something I desperately needed after the week I’ve had! 🤪

I really wish Puppet Combo found another way to give us the story and world building other than having to read all those notes... Instead of using them for additional details I felt that it was almost necessary for us to understand the plot as a whole.
Rock Candies note reading as world building is a staple in many adventure and horror games. I mean isn’t it just like one guy that does most of it? In which case people put far too large an expectation on the company for providing lovely little horror games
@@selty The problem isn't that there are world building notes but that he relied too heavily on them. The entire game wouldn't make sense without them but they are long, dry, and there are too many of them. They don't just slow the game, they bring it to a standstill over and over again. Good storytelling is more than just text dumps and good pacing is critical. There are numerous ways he could have given the plot info so that the notes he did have could be short and concise world building.
Notes are a very tired way of telling stories in horror games. Not gonna be nearly as good a game if it relies on using notes as a crutch
@@skullpunk475 As I said before, it's not the inclusion of notes but HOW they are included that's the problem. They are overly long, too many of them in too short a time frame, and the story isn't told in any other way BUT the notes.
There isn't any environmental story telling, characters, dialogue (aside from that one cryptic warning for each girl by the last one which was well done), or even atmosphere, just long dry notes. It slows the game to a standstill over and over again and that's bad pacing. And even the stuff that IS explained only covers who the monster is and NOT why this appears to be a boarding school, why it's only girls, and why they're told they are bad girls who's parents don't want them.
@@JamesMcmillianis11 Agreed, notes can help in story telling but it needs to be supplemental or at least just PART of how the story is being told. Notes can't replace good storytelling.

This was largely a love letter to Lucio Fulci's undead films (House by the Cemetery, The Beyond, City of the Living Dead, and Zombi). The human experimentation angle seems to take elements from House by the Cemetery, H.P. Lovecraft's story The Case of Charles Dexter Ward (made into a film called The Resurrected around 1990), and a bit of Frankenstein. Those statue zombies/undead seem to be straight out of the Tombs of the Blind Dead films and the normal zombies were definitely Fulci inspired as his often looked more rotten and decayed than the norm (other Italian zombie films like Zombie Holocaust and Burial Ground had similarly decayed zombies). Plus of course the homages to Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, and other fixed camera angle horror games from the early to late 90's.
I think fixed camera angles work well as long as either they are used to effect on occasion (the Fatal Frame inspired Wii game Cursed Mountain did this) and you mainly have another third person view, or you are given an option to change view to a more universal third person camera when obstructed by the view. I love the atmospheric effect of fixed camera angles, but they can be a pain sometimes. The view obstructing enemies can also make games much more intense, which I like, but it's not as guaranteed to work as traditional third person views.

I’ve only ever seen City but I really remember liking it. I’ll go check the others out! And yes I got such Lovecraft vibes in general with the impending and inexplicable doom, a cult surrounding it and a bunch of letters explaining it 😂

Is it just me or this game is very different from the other ones by Puppet Combo? He distanced himself a lot from his usual style. And there's those strange goofy moments. The idea is good, but the execution is kinda strange. His weakest work so far, in my opinion

@@charleswashington3973 I mean the letter and diary-reading aspect isn't novel to this game, Puppet Combo has used it in much of their other games too. The complaint is just that it's a LOT of reading as opposed to actual gameplay. I agree that it was nice to get a fully-fleshed story in this game, however I do wish there were other ways to go about learning about the story, such as speaking to the other characters or having the deformed doctor speak to us.

After having watched it, I feel I have some of the same gripes as John. The fixed camera angles aside, it feels different because it feels more like a regular old horror game. In fact, it feels to me like a less interesting version of Phobia or Blackwater.

honestly it was... not my fav puppet combo game for a long time. Until it amped up to a billion. I thought it would've been a bit more like rule of rose I guess? There are plenty of puppet combo games that gets right to it I suppose. Its interesting to say the least. Thanks for playing, editing and suffering through the uploading fun that's TH-cam! I am loving Puppet Combo’s more experimental and original stuff, and Puppet Combo’s progression as a game developer is wholesome and inspiring. I really appreciate the (what I feel are) cinema nods to Dawn of the Dead, Frankenstein, and House on Haunted Hill. The graphics are such a great improvement (THE DRESSES ARE SWISHYYY and the liiiighting). Great content. Can’t wait to play.
