I was already a Gaga fan....but this night changed my whole view of her. She showed us her range of talent. No one was expecting this.
She actually asked Julie to give her notes on how to do it in the original key and all that and she tried her best. Julie herself said it was just amazing. To know she herself said that is crazy.
I love Gaga so much, she is such a versatile artist.
I was so skeptical I was: "Please please don't ruin this masterpiece I absolutely love this movie" and low and behold I nearly cried I was so overwhelmed because she made part of my childhood live twice 🥰
Gaga is just unique. Never been such a multi-talented artist in all of music history. Totally agree with your reaction and glad you let her performance run without interruption. One of her admirers is none other than Celine Dion. You see her applauding at the end. I reckon no one in that audience could believe what they had just seen and heard.
are you referring to the lady in the red dress after they cut from Meryl and JLo? That's not Celine... but on a fun note the man behind her to the right is GaGa's dad I believe
I think this showed the world that didn't realize how great a vocalist she is. Also singing in all types of various songs not just pop rock.
Even more amazing when you realize that all the vocals are in the same key that Julie Andrews sang those songs. Even better because Lady Gaga asked permission from Julie to sing those songs and sing them in the same key
I watched this on tv and I cried my eyes out of how proud I was of lady Gaga and what a fan I am of sound of music..and then Julie came out and I was dead....THIS was the turning point for all those people that dist her for being “weird” and wearing a meat dress..this is what you call a true artist and performer...she can do it ALL!

Phenomenal artist! Taste is personal and people have different favourites in songs and artists... but if we are talking about sheer talent in different artistic sectors and performances across a range of genres at the highest artistic level, then I see no one in all of music performance history to compare with Gaga. Truly a one-off.

Gaga is one of the most gifted and versatile singers today. I especially enjoy her duets with Tony Bennett of the classic jazz songs from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. The Lady can sing!
These songs are so interwoven with Julie Andrews and her vocals, it is hard to imagine anyone else singing them and not screwing them up in some small way, but Lady Gaga absolutely nailed it. You can see it in her reaction, the crowds standing ovation and then from Julie Andrews herself who came out clapping for her and giving her a big hug. When I saw the actual performance that night it sent chills up my spine it was so good. It is quite possibly the greatest Oscar performance ever.

I just want to thank you for actually seeing how Gaga reacts to Dame Andrews after the performance, Gaga did a great job but to have the full approval of the original on screen Maria is such a hug to the heart.

Wonderful wonderful wonderful. I had no idea before this that Gaga was trained as an opera singer. Have never forgotten this performance.
Many of the top singers you hear (Lady Gaga, David from Disturbed, etc) have had classical singing training which allows them such flow and wide range of vocal pitch.

...Lady Gaga asked Julie Andrews for permission to do this medley, and then said she would present in the same key that Julie Andrews originally sang it in; Lady Gaga practiced for two months to get the phrasing right; the collective gasp from the audience on Oscar night when Lady Gaga was announced was drowned out by their applause at the end of Gaga's performance; Brava, Gaga! Bravissima!
