Continental UC7 [Tire Review] - Including a Wet Road Test Up Genting Highlands | YS Khong Driving

  • Being motoring enthusiasts, we all understand the importance of having a good set of tires, but the cost of replacement can be an obstacle for some. As for me, I am constantly on the lookout for reasonably-priced tires that can still do a good job while on the road.
    It seems that the Continental UC7 is a tire that would fit the bill - built with a new compound that provides a good balance between road grip and durability, and is great in the wet. As a bonus, the tire also features very much reduced road noise, thanks to its built-in noise breakers.
    We fitted a set onto my Golf Mk6 TSi, and took it up our favorite mountain road to check the tires out.
    Definitely the tires were quieter than the set it replaced, and the cornering was very good too. We managed to test the dry grip for a little bit at the start of the hill climb - it was drizzling slightly, but the road was dry enough for us to confirm the dry grip was good, but the real proof of the UC7 came later when it poured cats and dogs.
    Suffice to say, the Continental UC7 took to the wet like a duck to water - please watch the video in full, and let us know your comments.

    Changed to the UC7 this morning and was curious about it, stumbled upon Uncle Khong's video.
    I came from a Bridgestone RE004 which was a sporty tyre with hard side wall. The first impression of using the UC7 was dull was not as sharp and upon cornering it felt that the tyre flex is high. Good part is that the noise reduction, absorption of bumpiness and wet grip is superb.
    After watching Uncle's video, it gave me new confidence to try it in the dry once more. If Uncle approves, as a normal driver sure approve! :D
    Thank you Uncle Khong!

      Thank you for the great feedback. The UC7, as I said is for those who want a good ture that offers good ride comfort; this tyre delivers just that. Our test is to check out the handling for this ture meant for comfort and we found it to be excellent as well.
      Conti also has the SC7, which is a high performance tyre.

    Thank you for the excellent video and review! 🙏 Really nicely done.👍 Nowadays it is so very difficult to find a review by someone that is actually experienced and knowledgeable ...there are lots of "opinions" and "experts" who actually have little knowledge and do not really test a product. Thanks for the review and thanks to the weather gods-( i was hoping to see an on-road test in the wet with UC7`s and got it), i currently am using UC6 215/60/60 on my AU Falcon in Australia, the rears have been on for 4yrs-2Months and have done 49548kms and are almost due for replacement and was already looking for a pair of UC6`s which have become hard to find on the Australian East Coast, i was told by Continental only today, that the UC6`s are being replaced with UC7`s "officially launched today" and will be widely available in the next 2~4weeks-"good timing there". Sometimes we get very negative comments, and these are very upsetting, although in truth we have learnt to just ignore them: but seeing positive ones from nice people like you, despite being total strangers, is very heartening. Thanks again.
      As for the UC7, I think you can glean from my video that I am quite impressed with the performance, and under those wet conditions, you cannot pretend they are good if they are not.

Anyway, being a layman I shot in the dark and took the word of the wise (technician) and ended up with Toyo Proxies. He mentioned UC6 sidewall is too fragile. I would love to know the loading profile of the DNA architecture of UC7. There are many reasons tyres harden and crack, and infrequent use is one of the reasons, amongst others.
      I normally tell people to biy the best tyres that they can afford.
      The tyre market is very competitive, so the price usually is a good indicator. You get what you pay for.
      The UC7 is made for less noisy operation, good grip and good wet performance, as said in the video, and if those things match what ypu want, then go for it

      Honestly the CC is rubbish in wet conditions. I drifted twice in the cc (unintentional) thank god managed to save it and I was not speeding. Got fed up with it and switched to the Michelin XM2+ but since those tyres are more to longevity, the compound is harder than usual, hence abit louder noise. The Goodyear Excellence is just a regular budget tyre where the condition for everything is just fair. On the other hand i switched to the UC7 for the front tyres and found it more quiet and grippy for me. Really love them. My advice, if you travel alot it’ll be better to get the Michelin, if you travel lesser mostly city driving and maybe 5-10 outstation trips a year, get the UC7. If you’re on a budget then get the Goodyear or the Toyo Proxes TR1. Never go for the CC6. Another good tyre is the Yoko ES32 which is good for comfort and wet but wears off quickly. MC6 is stiffer, and more performance oriented. Tje UC7 is a good tyre for those who prefer comfort, but its cornering and wet performance is good as well. So it depends on your preferences. This is a good all rounder.
      If you drive normal 80 percent of the time, and fast 20 percent of the time, this would be a great tyre.

    Hi YS Khong ! My car was equipped with UC6 this whole time, and it’s not a comfortable tyre IMO. Is the UC7 more comfortable than UC6 ? Was choosing between this UC7 or Goodyear Eagle F1 Sport for comfy ride🤔

    • @YSKhongDriving
      @YSKhongDriving  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Eagle F1 Sport is a tyre that is leaning more to sporty performance, with stiffer sidewalls and more of a block type tread. As I said in my video, all tyres are a 'compromise', meaning the maker chooses where in the performance sorctrum they want to be, so most of them have a comfort range, and performa.ce range and perhaps something in between.
      Oerformance thres tend to have stiffer sidewalks, and soft compounds that give more grip. Soft compounds dont last, so that is a sacrifice on durability, with a gain in grip. Stiffer sidewalls mean more bumpy ride, sacrificing comfort for handling.
      Block treads give better grip, but are not so good in the wet; more water chsnnels mean less rubber in contact with the road, thus sacrificing dry grip for wet grip.
      Every now and then, tyre makers come up with new compounds and dedigns that provide some breakthroughs, and the UC7 is one of them.
      Thus, the UC7 provides better grip with a newly developed compound, yet can maintain the UC6 durability, and also the build of the inner thre to provide a soft ride while providing better handling in the wet, through venturi flow for water and also is wuieter due to the noise breaker feature.
      Finally it was proven by oure chance, because it rained and as you can see in the video, wet handling, and overall handling was pretty good.
      I would say it is a good overall tyre for those who lean more towards comfort, but want reassuring performance.

    Uncle how is it compared to ps4? I know both different categories but for city hatchback ‘not much power’ does ps4 worth it or uc7 just enough?

    • @YSKhongDriving
      @YSKhongDriving  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think for City HB, the UC7 would be a good all rounder and would cost less. You are right about not needing so much grip. The test car is a 2010 Golf 1.4 TSi which has more power and the UC7 was more than adequate.

    How do these compare to the MC6 and PS4, looking strictly for performance only

    • @YSKhongDriving
      @YSKhongDriving  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually the UC7 is not a performance tyre, but it performs close to its competitors, and exceeds some. I think it is equivalent to the PS4 (not PS4S), but sold at a lower price. Thus it is good value for money. It definitely is a quantum leap from the UC6.

    Better than MC6? 🤔

    • @YSKhongDriving
      @YSKhongDriving  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think MC6 is higher performance because of stiffer sidewalls, but this one is quieter, and good in the wet.

      This UC7 actually surprises me, especislly with its quietness and road grip, especially in the wet. As you can see in the video, the car handled the corners very well.

      We have only done the test on the UC7, so there was no comparison. You can watch the UC7 video and see the user comments.

      Continental buat R&D supaya tayar sesuai untuk digunakan di Malaysia. Bahan dan R&D yang digunakan adalah lebih sesuai dengan cuaca Malaysia so wet grip lagi cantik.
