Frog Fishing Fails | A Frustrating Day of Bass Fishing

  • If you've bass fished long enough, you've had the pleasure of witnessing a lights-out frog bite. And if you've shared this special time, you know there's as many incredible moments as there are frustrating. Well, on this day, for every incredible moment, there was an absolutely disappointing moment followed shortly thereafter.
In a short "half day" of fishing, 1-7PM, over 15 fish gave me the opportunity to pierce their lips and 100% of the time I failed to lift them into the boat. That is with the single caveat of a skunk breaking dropshot fish.
It's in these moments that I realize, sometimes you have to learn the hard way. Whether it be a user error, an improper piece of gear or equipment malfunction, we can learn something every day on the water. And on this day, I learned a very important lesson: don't expect to catch a fish on a hollow-body frog if you're using the wrong gear...
A rod with a strong backbone, but enough tip to flip the frog into the perfect spot, a reel with a fast enough retrieve to grab slack line, line strong enough to stay stiff during a strong hookset and a frog with sharp hooks are all keys to success. If just one of those pieces fails, you're likely to have an unfortunate day, just like this one, missing a potential fish of the year...
My frog setup for the day was partially acceptable and listed below, but I'll surely be changing a few things:
Rod: Phenix Bass Recon Elite Casting Rod 7'4" Med Hvy
Notes: I'm confident that this rod will do the trick and have had success prior to this outing while frog fishing with it.
    Reel: Shimano SLX 151HG
Notes: This could do the trick, but I'd be ok with a slightly faster gear ratio. Will likely be switching over to an old Daiwa Lexa with 8.1:1
    Line: Seagur Invizx 17lb Fluorocarbon
Notes: This is my go-to line for fishing anything with a blade; spinnerbait, chatterbait, spoon, etc. But, I can tell you, it won't be my go-to for frog fishing. As soon as I switch back to the Lexa, 40lb braid will join the party.
Frogs: 6th Sense Vega Frog 70 Mossback, Spro Bronzeye Pop 60 Green Tree & Jackall Kaera Frog Black Gill
Notes: The 6th Sense Vega spent 90% of the time on the end of the line, thus had the most misses. While it walks beautifully, stands up to my throwing it as deep in ever hole I can and simply gets bit, I would've expected atleast 1 pierced lip. That said, I may need to either soften up the body with a quick boil or simply try again with braid.
