While it had a checkered past the Brickyard 400 has had races that many races that draw people’s attention. Outside of the 2008 tire debacle the one that most look back on, especially newer fans, is the 2017 Brickyard 400. With nobody being safe and everything from crashes to weather to even the darkness threatening this race it is pretty clear why many remember it. Add to this the hard racing and you have an event that can be a shining example of why fans would love it in NASCAR. This is the craziest Brickyard 400 in NASCAR history.

Hi ice berg
Jimmie Johnson sending it 3 wide while BLOWING UP for the win at Indy will forever be one of the most badass moments in NASCAR history.
Even though he couldn't make it stick, you have to give serious props to Jimmie for sending it 3 wide on the backstretch and into 3 while his engine was blowing up. 🫡
I rewatch that moment all the time. True dedication on Jimmie’s part.
Didn’t my boy get mad at Rick allen for assuming he blew a engine
I miss Kasey Kahne
uwu
He was such a great underdog in his final few years.
yes
I do too, and I don't know why, I never really cared much about him, but I wish he had raced longer.
He was an easy driver to like. Didn't get involved in a lot of drama, and managed to bring the car back in one piece more often than not. I miss him too, but at least I can still watch him race in WoO
Imagine if Jimmie made the pass while going for the win while the car was blowing up. That would've been one of the most daring and impressive passes we've ever seen in recent NASCAR history.
Plus, the fact this race went past 8 PM CST, if I'm correct, that would've been the longest Brickyard 400 yet.
You should do review of 2004 Brickyard 400…
Lots of passes throughout the field, many racing incidents and Jeff Gordon dominated & won the race with a damaged fender.
Also, this was the first race to introduce the GWC restart in the Cup Series.
I remember this race! The fact Jimmie Johnson was able to keep racing for the lead while appearing to be blowing up has got to be one of the wildest things ever seen in NASCAR. Just imagine if he was somehow able to pull that off.
The Top Finishers from the 2017 Brickyard 400 were Kasey Kahne in 1st, Ryan Newman in 3rd, Matt DiBenedetto in 8th, Chris Buescher in 9th, A.J. Allmendinger in 10th, Danica Patrick in 11th, Cole Whitt in 12th, and Timmy Hill in 14th. That was indeed a crazy wild race.
Don’t forget that Trevor Bayne was also in the Top 5 for much of the closing stages until the wreck on the overtime restart
As a die hard 48 fan, Jimmie sending it in 3 wide, blowing up was so awesome even tho it didn't end well I remember freaking out at my TV 😅
I remember this race. It was insane. After my main driver Truex wrecked out I had to go with my second Kasey Kahne. Needless to say those last couple laps were stress inducing. I was so happy when he won.
This was a memorable final win for Kasey Kahne. The OT line rule is 1 of the dumbest rules created in NASCAR history. I'll never forget watching this never ending race live.
I genuinely don't understand what made them think it was a good idea. Hated it then, hate the thought of it now.

Really hoping the brickyard 400 comes back next year on the oval!
It's coming back next year. That's the worst kept secret at the moment. No need to hope.
Haven't been since I hope so
@@tatsupazuzu yeah I have never been to IMS but I’m waiting to see if they go back to the oval because that is the race I want to watch in person
No one liked the oval. The majority of fans got tired and bored of it
@@vidmasterK1 but with the next Gen I think the racing will recover… and the racing at the road course (turn 1) is atrocious
i appreciate all of the Eric Estepp shoutouts on the first caution by Jeff Burton. 😂😂😂
I remember tuning in to the race shortly after Stage 1 ended I believe, and loved every second of the race afterwards. So much happened in that race and Kahne winning was a really nice ending.
I started watching the race at my Nana’s at the end of Stage One. It was such a bonkers race and I loved it.
This was the first Nascar race I ever watched. Fell in love with the sport that day and been here ever since
Can all we agree that when the Brickyard 400 was reaching the end of it's time, it literally had the best races in the last five years for the event?
Nope because the 2019 and 2020 races both sucked badly and 2018 was the last good one.
I agree. Nothing really stood out to me in the early 2010's other than Menard and Gordan's victories. But the later years were most definitely better: 2016 had the battle of the Gibbs cars, 2017 already explained here and was something that never got boring, 2018 had strategy and very exciting final laps, 2019 had the chaos in turn 2 and the fighters for the final playoff spots, and 2020 had wild restarts, drama with tires (not as bad as 2008), and the potential of Matt Kenseth pulling one more possible win. So yeah, definitely some of the best years even if the stands didn't show it.
I had been a Kahne fan since 04. Was so thrilled when he got this win. The type of career Larson is having with HMS in the 5 is what I had hoped for Kahne. Disappointed it didn't turn out that way, but he still accomplished more than many other drivers and held his own with some legends.
As someone who was sitting in turn 1, and saw Truex and Busch collide right in front of me, i can day this was definitely the craziest, and best Brickyard 400 ever
Still one my favorite nascars races in the last 10 years, if not ever. I remember I was on vacation in Maine, and it was just crazy to see all the crashes and all the lead changes and just dramatic ending towards the end, it felt like a Talladega race with how many crashes and pile ups
I remember I was at a campout this weekend and found out about Kahne's win over instagram, and ended up going back to rewatch every bit of footage I could find that night. It had been so long since Kahne had won, i thought it may never happen again, and I hated that i missed it live, but i was so happy that he was able to get one more for himself. Hell, he was even able to reclaim the Brickyard victory that slipped through his fingers back in 2005, which made it even more special! He'll always be my first favorite driver, so this race will always hold a place in my heart
We were at this race and my brother is still convinced Jimmie had this race won. My mom has a picture of me crying after Jr DNF'ed and I remember it being one of the craziest races I've ever been to (it feels like every race I go to something major happens lol)
This was the race that got me back into NASCAR after about ten years of not paying attention.
I remember watching this race at home and although I wasn’t a Kahne fan by any means I was rooting for him for the entire last portion of the race. I was so happy to see him win.
9:46 is one of my favorite camera angles of all time and I don't really know why. I think it just conveys the speed much better than the straight on ones.
The 2017 Brickyard 400 was insane
This was one of the first nascar races in its entirety, and why I really miss the oval version of this race
The Inagural race is classic not just for Jeff's win but the Bodine brother fued. That #48 pass was pretty awesome. Another memorable moment is when Kurt Busch and Jimmie Spencer got into it!
While I was in Europe during the Indianapolis weekend, after Kyle got the pole I basically said it was going to be a repeat of last year. It looked like it after the first two stages. Until the impossible happened. When I woke up without knowing who won and pulled up the nascar website I was disbelief. Kahne winning and Kyle wrecking even with the fastest car in the field was absolute legendary for the ages.
Remember when the oval was arguably the most hated track on the circuit? And back when people WANTED the road course?
Yep an it turns out the road course sucks too.
THIS is my favorite Brickyard race ever, from one of my most favorite seasons I watched.
I glad to see the Brickyard 400 is back...Can't wait.
the best part of the overtime line was how NASCAR couldnt hide how they were using it to manipulate finishes
The 2017 brickyard, the 2021 and 2022 road course races were the most craziest races I’ve ever seen take place in Indianapolis ☠️
My uncle was part of the 5 team, and my mom was a fan of him to. Pretty special that he won
First nascar race i ever saw. After that, I was hooked for life.
I never comment on TH-cam videos but I had to drop one noticing the Avenged Sevenfold string tribute in the beginning. There one of my favorite bands and I thought no way they're in an Iceberg video right now. Love the content man!
This was the first race I attended, a memory I’ll never forget.
Love this race, always try to re-watch during the winter and Jeff Gordon's last win in 2014
You forgot to mention how dehydrated KK was during his post race interview
I saw it live, I was so tired of all the wrecking but glad to see Khane take it!
I don’t care what anyone says this is a top 10 nascar race of all time literally had eveything you could ask for in a race
Nope the most ridiculous race since the 2008 Brickyard. What an overrated race.
I had to watch this race in my motorhome cuz we were on vacation. Definitely one of my favorite racing memories to date
This Bayne fan is not over this race
I was at this race. It does not come across on TV how dark it was getting. I sit in the Stand E Penthouse, so I have a straight view down to turn four, and I was legitimately starting to have trouble seeing the cars come off that turn. Even if Kasey hadn't crossed that line to make it official when that final caution came out, I'm fairly confident that they wouldn't have had another restart.
I remember this race like it was yesterday first nascar race at Indy I ever watched so awesome so mad they race on the boring road course
Favorite brickyard for me was 2015 and 2016 when KFB spanked the field both years
Jr blowing his engine in his last Brickyard, Jimmie foreshadowing his downfall, Busch and Truex wrecking when they were arguably the most dominant cars all day, all those mid pack crashes, and Kasey Kahne winning his last race…
Crazy, yet great!
i will say seeing truexs car go up in flames in person was a wild experince i was sitting low in turn 2 and u could feel the heat comin out
As a lifelong Kasey Kahne fan, this was the best Brickyard 400 of all time!!!
Went to the 500 80-95 had awesome front straight seats.
Love Nascar but never thought a race there would work as you can't see most of the track.
The Indy cars quickly spread out- used to anyway.
Turn 2 is my go to, get to see nearly half the track from there
@@johnsluck. I haven't been since 95 and that was the 500 hopefully they have better sight lines where possible.
Not letting crew chiefs work on their cars really affects the Indy oval racing. Would be one of the best tacks as many speed, handling and pick up compromises can be made on those flat 90s- spreading out the field.
I was at this race and it was one of the most entertaining, frustrating NASCAR races I’ve ever been to
That move that jj made was sick all thought he spun man I loved this race
This was the first race where I actually got frustrated with how many wrecks there were.
Remember the year that they had to pit for tires after so many laps? That was the strangest race ever at Indy.
As a Kasey Kahne fan this was one of my favorite races ever
Same here. First win and last win are most memorable for me. Honorable mention to the All Star win and Coke 600 win where Tony Stewart had a flat on the last lap.
NASCAR didn’t have a choice on the final attempt. They had to wait for the leader to get to the line because of darkness
Yeah. Dumb rule looking back but they made the right call.
this was the race that got me back into nascar.
This was my first ever nascar race and I can confirm as a fan it was wild
Jimmie going 3 wide for the lead, while blowing up is peak NASCAR, change my mind
Being at that race I swear it felt like it was never gonna end, especially when the restart/wreck happened it was like "OH COME ON!!! Somebody win this race already!!!"
And of course its Kasey Kahne who hadn't won in like forever taking the W that day.
Could you do a video on the missed chances of Team Penske at Indianapolis in NASCAR Cup leading up to Brad Keselowski winning the race in 2018?
Moving it to the road course was yet another horrible decision on the mountain of horrible decisions made by NASCAR since 2020.
1.) Stewart winning his first one in 2005
2.) Kenseth vs Harvick raced for the win in 2020
3.) Bill Elliott dominating in 2002
4.) Ricky Rudd 1997
5.) Paul Menard beating Jeff Gordon in 2011
As a Kyle Busch fan, Martin truex became public enemy No. 1 that day. (It didn’t last long, MTJ is awesome)
Jeff Gordon winning the 1st ever Brickyard 400 and Tony Stewart winning at his home track. Smoke and the pit crew climbing the fence.
Dude I respect the grind but a minute long sponsorship in the first 30 seconds of the video when I just had to watch 2 15 second ads is ridiculous
I LOVE seeing that 5 car in victory lane
Rick Allen: "GRRRRRRRRRN FLARG BARCK IRN THE ARR!"
I was there. Still to this day it's the best race I have ever attended. We stayed the entire time... was a long day
When the oval comes back the crowd will be so damn good
I watched this race it was a wrecked fest indeed in this 2017. All the delays all red wrecks and also 78 and 18 pits jawing each other it had it all
12:27 There was a controversy because NASCAR waited to throw the caution. People tried justifying this by saying "It was going to be dark anyway get over it" but I disagree. Throw the caution the same way every time and THEN "shorten it" (it was already past 160 laps from OT) from darkness.
Great video man.
One of my favorite wins in racing history.
I just remember saying this race will never end omg
Dude I have such a fun memory with this race . My family’s business was at a food and me and my brother were in the hotel room , sunburnt from silverwood, comic con was happening, I was so mad that Kyle Busch crashed leading and then it turned into excitement and mayham at who was gonna win
So you going to comic con again next year?
@@runrafarunthebestintheworld no I wasn’t at comic con , the race was happening the weekend of comic con . That was when we got Sonic forces and Sonic mania music and trailers , the infinity war leaked trailer , thor ragnorok trailer , regardless of how some of that stuff turned out , couple that with an insanely entertaining race and it was an awesome weekend
Timmy Hill scored his best career finish in the NASCAR Cup Series in this very race which was 14th
The 66 probably would have had a top 10 if Timmy didnt get into the grass trying to miss the last lap crash and rip the splitter off.
Kasey nearly collapsed celebrating too, severely dehydrated
Crazy to think it’s been 6 years since it happened
*Sad, incredibly depressed JIMMAY noises* 😭
At least JIMMAY got to go for the win. T-Rex Rawr had to wreck Buschy and take them both out.
The 1997 Brickyard was my favorite as a Ricky Rudd fan
It was fates way of gifting him a win at the brickyard after letting it get away from him in 05, 11 and 14.
Exactly! I wish Darlington and Dover had granted him that courtesy before he stepped away
The way NASCAR messed with the FWC rule.... the rule as it was was bad enough, but for the wreck to happen before Kahne crossed the overtime line, and for NASCAR not to throw the caution until after Kahne crossed the overtime line.... I understand that darkness was approaching, but still....
A little piece of heaven in the background sneaky a7x reference
Also my favorite moment, any time the cars are run on an oval.
What is your favorite Brickyard 400?
1995
2007
1994, 1998, 2001, 2004, 2014
2004
@@TheZPTR2008 was my first nascar race ever
Kasey Kahne had 3 Brickyard 400 races slip through his fingers. You can argue that this win was lucky, but considering how bad his luck was 60 percent of the time he was on the track, I think a lucky break was warranted.
I hated that it came at the expense of Kyle Busch’s bid for 3 in a row but it was a nice trade off anyway.
And I would argue that Kahne had a great car in practice that weekend but he had a terrible qualifying effort, which probably would have given him a better chance to fight for the win. But Kahne winning made up for that disappointing wreck with Truex and Busch
Favorite Brickyard - Harvick 2019
My 1st & only trip to Indy so far
Ah yes, the first nascar race I ever watched
This race was epic.
as a Kasey Kahne fan I will always love this race no matter how stupid it got
I was mad when that Kyle Busch/Truex crash happened, and wanted the race over with by the end.
My favorites were all 5 of Jeff Gordon’s victories there.
Didn't NBC switch this to NBCSN because local news was on in the east Coast?
Favorite Indy moment would be Briscoe dumping Hamlin that was hilarious. But Brickyard would be any of Harvicks wins.
My favorite brickyard moment was 2001
My first in person race and I correctly picked the Winner Jeff Gordon
When I saw this Brickyard 400 I saw top 6 usual suspects except Kasey Kahne through out the 2017 year was not doing well, and struggling and then wins the biggest race of his career and gets in the playoffs, and winning the last race for the 5 until 2021. But I think about some these other finishers Daniel Suarez 7th not a great big surprise but I say it was but Matt DiBennendetto 8th he got top 10's in both the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400 for 2017, as well as then teammates at JTG Daughtry Chris Buescher, and AJ Allmendinger, and Danica Patrick in 11th, but more shocking Cole Whitt and Timmy Hill in 12th and 14th if I am not mistaken that was their best career finishes or equaled it if I am not mistaken. But it was Timmy Hill's first lead lap Cup Series finish since Kansas of 2012. And the first for the 66 car since 2008 at Homestead-Miami. But no question this Brickyard 400 was crazy. Cautions everywhere, some unlikely strong finishers. given where a lot of them were in points for 2017.
I want this race back. It feels wrong running the road course and not the oval
It's gonna come back next year though on the oval. Worst kept secret nascar has.
@@runrafarunthebestintheworld I had no idea!
