  • In this video I explain and show how to remove the hybrid cooling fan on a 2010-15 Toyota Prius. This is a very important maintenance item as it helps to maintain the battery temperature and when the fan is dirty it doesn't move the appropriate amount of air to cool the battery.
Depending on where you live this will need to be done more often. I live in the Pacific NW and the fan was dirty but not terrible after 12 years and 135k miles. I've seen some very dirty fans cause hybrid batteries to fail long before they should have.
Also check the filter for the hybrid fan and clean it regularly. The earlier years didn't come with a filter but you can add one if yours isn't equipped with one. It is located on the rear part of the right rear door.

Thank you very much Sir, I used this video to clean my 2010 Auris hybrid battery fan, couple small differences, from prius , but almost identical! ;) great stuff!

Fantastic! That's the nice thing about most of these Toyota products, there may be some small differences but enough is the same that most of the time people can use it to figure things out as you did, good job! Thanks for your support, I truly appreciate it.

What is that cool tool you used? Like a cordless drill but for nuts and bolts? I'd love one of those! And what are the attachments called if they're sold separate? Are there different lengths for reaching into tight spots?

I love this tool! I use a lot of different Milwaukee M12 and M18 power tools. Here is what I have and use in the video. It's also available at Home Depot. www.amazon.com/IR-201B-Compact-Impact-Ratchet-Li-Ion/dp/B01A5YJ4VQ/ref=sr_1_50?crid=1P5B5WX33CY17&keywords=milwaukee+M12+3%2F8%22+tools&qid=1689982791&s=automotive&sprefix=milwaukee+m12+3%2F8+tools%2Cautomotive%2C173&sr=1-50

Is this the fist time that you cleaned the Hybrid Cooling Fan? I have a 2014 Toyota Prius with 65K miles. I'm not sure what the inside of the Hybrid Cooling Fan looks like. I replaced the existing Hybrid Cooling Fan Filter with the one that attaches to the outside of the external vent port (near passengers side rear seat). Last Friday, I used the Dr. Prius APP and tested the Life Expectancy of the High Voltage Battery. The results of this test: "Battery pack estimated 79.37% capacity left (is in good condition)". Have you performed a similar test on your High Voltage Battery?

Yes, this was the first time I had done the cooling fan cleaning. On the 2010 model we have it didn't come with a filter like later model years. I did add one to ours to help the cooling fan. I wanted to make sure that the fan was clean from when I added the filter. I'm fortunate to live in the PNW where the air is clean but for those that life in areas with a lot of dust/dirt/smog the filter and fan will need to be cleaned more often. I need to do the Dr Prius test on my battery too. I've thought about it and then I forget to do it. I need to download the app and see if my OBD wireless scanners that I have will work with the app. Judging from the way the car behaves the battery is in decent condition still. I have a high end scanner that is similar to the Toyota tech stream the dealer uses so I need to see what that can show me too.

@@jimsgaragetoys What is your opinion on disconnecting the high voltage battery plug prior to cleaning the cooling fan? I have watched several TH-cam Videos (same subject) where some people disconnected the plug and some did not.

@@user-ps7dd8hy9h For the cooling fan there's no need as the fan isn't high voltage. With the simple clip you can unplug it to clean it. Just like you don't need to disconnect the high voltage battery to work on other lower voltage parts.

How often should this fan cleaning be done?

  • @MrLuigi-oi7gm

Wow! That's a lot of work to clean the fan. I've seen a similar strategy employed on other TH-cam videos. I really wonder if all this is necessary, or could you use one of those long, flexible, and narrow vacuum houses that are used to clean down into the exhaust venting of a clothes dryer? It looks like it could be inserted into vent supply opening and snake around to the fan. Obviously, it won't do as good a cleaning job as what you did, but it's a lot better than nothing...which is probably what a lot of people will do after seeing all that you did in this video.

It's really not as bad as it looked. None of it was difficult but filming it takes extra time. Your idea is a good one but I don't think it would work. I found the dirt on the blades was caked on and didn't just come off with a vacuum. It needed to be cleaned more directly. Don't let the video scare you off from doing the job correctly, and the best thing for battery health.

@@jimsgaragetoys Thanks for the response and feedback!! I have a 2011 Prius. In all the years since then that I've brought it in for service, the dealership has never mentioned adding the filter cover that Toyota started installing on that inlet port to prevent dust and debris from contaminating the fan. 🤦‍♂️ It's a simple, $15ish clip-on item. I think Toyota started equipping Priuses with that filter in late 2012. Hm...I have a new idea based on your information. 🤔 What if I add a cylindrical brush that is about the diameter of the inside of the fan to the end of that clothes dryer vacuum hose? I could then agitate the fan blades with the brush while the vacuum sucks up the debris. What do you think? Kind regards, Luigi

@@MrLuigi-oi7gm Yes, I do believe that everyone with an early 3rd Gen Prius should add the filter and was easy to get from the dealer. You wouldn't know if that would work until you try but I don't think it would work well. You also need to completely clean the blades to make sure it's still balanced when spinning. I've found over the years when I try to do a short cut it only takes me more time after I end up doing it the right way. 🤣

Truly not really that much effort involved, & unfortunately no - especially if you've got dogs who shed a lot & don't already have a filter you really do need to disassemble to get in there.

Wow. The soft porn girlie posters on the wall are such a turn-off that I'm going to find a more professional learning experience. Jim that's really offensive.

How are some posters of Kathy Ireland offensive? She was a model that I've loved since she was discovered when we were both 17 years old. My wife used to get me a calendar of hers every Christmas. She made sure that the posters were dry matted so they wouldn't be ruined when hung in the garage. Even she doesn't understand how anyone thinks something that isn't soft porn in any way can be offensive. So when you go the beach and girls are in swim suits you are offended? I'm sorry that you feel the way that you do but I do these videos to help people. I might not agree with everything that they do but that's beside the case.
