To be honest, this sounds a lot like South Korea. The pressure to succeed, high suicide rate, hyper consumerism and materialism. Also, it is one of the most capitalistic countries in Asia.
Growing up as an autistic child those words hit different. I remember as a child when parents would discourage their children from playing with me in the name of "you might also become as dumb as he is in academics". I lost my best friend and I had to grow up without friends and worst of it all teachers also used to discourage kids from playing with me. If I knew what suicide was back when I was a child I'm afraid I wouldn't be here today
People look to ideas, not to the person, cuz success is rare and people are everywhere, don't worry, some people know u have a good cause(if u have it)
I became more and more dissatisfied with my country the longer I went into this video (because of the likeness of Richland and my country - in fact, they're almost identical!). Though, what I took from it was that if you are conscious about these factors you can work against them, and live the good life (defined by YOU, and not those around you). - Be satisfied with what you have - don't strive for material goods. - Try to live a good life - not the good life defined by those around you. (Yeah, I repeated it!) - Stop competing with your co-workers, and try to find a healthy job environment. - Don't define yourself by your grades, your title or your work performance or similar - find something that matters to YOU! -Don't work your ass off and go on vacations - you can get by without the expensive car (swapped out every two years) and the enormous house - yeah, your friends, neighbors and co-workers will define you by these things, but why should you care? And secondly, if you lose your job or go broke, it's usually not that big of a deal (compared to some guy in Sudan going broke) - Don't follow the news - it's a waste of time and detrimental to your mental health (just google "why you should stop reading the news, and you'll have tons of good arguments). - Lastly, spend time and love your kids and your family and (good) friends, and stop caring about what others think about you.
🌎 As long as people continue to see themselves as separate from everything else, they lend themselves to being completely enslaved. We can not separate anything from everything. Success depends on how well we relate to everything around us. Joy comes from that bliss of connectedness. I believe that unarmed truth and love will have the final word in reality. To love; you should have good heart. I am a good person until I see a person better than my standard of goodness. Being good is the progress towards a worthy cause. Love is God. Whoever lives in love, lives forever. How selfish it is to try to keep something forever? Love is all about nourishing, nurturing, sharing and expanding the love within you for all. The principle to which we adhere to is that we have kindness of love at heart for the whole of mankind. As long as there is the unnecessary differences within us; we can not live peacefully so we have to eliminate all the unnecessary differences among us so we can love all. People abilities may vary but not there true love. If we love a person/ God for a reason then we love the reason but not the person. No reason is the reason to love the person because true love never fails. So do not compare or measure the true love as first or the last but love all truly. If you love people truly then you can understand people. If you don't love then you don't understand people at all. People are controlled by system why? The Cyclical Consumption is the current economy all over the World. It is making the scarcity problems of the earth finite resources to deteriorate day by day. Current Monetary System is legalised theft. Real money is Gold and Silver. Scarcity gives the money more value. Real money won't lose it's value. When Governments stay away from Gold & Silver then very easy to transfer the wealth / resources to upper class the Rich (Corporatocracy) Elite. When the Governments are printing out more new fiat currency with reserve banks, our old currency is losing its purchasing power everyday. They are printing millions of currency everyday. All governments and laws are existing right now to transfer wealth to upper class the rich elite. The USA Government & other Governments are in many countries, bailed the investment banks & financial institutions in 2008 against the majority of the people. There is no democracy in any countries. Because of the Money System based on profits motive only above all else even humans lives and well-being. So, we do not have freedom to protect our values with the money so on. The violence, bankruptcy & all the negativities are build into the Monetary System of our society. All are owned (including ourselves) by Reserve Bank. Which is private cartel the corporation. So, in legal system, we are legally considered as chattel the properties. They make money in the capital markets with our birth certificates. They do not consider us as Humans. That's the truth. We are in the invisible war with the Elites (Corporatocracies). We have to fight for our Freedom. Resource Based Economy is the Solution. We have to declare the earth resources as the heritage of all the people of this world. So everyone has access to it. Please have your research about zeitgeist movement then you know the truth more. Truth About Health/Drugs Industry Because Of It Your Life At High Risk. The drug industry is a 1/2 trillion dollars a year worldwide conglomerate. Almost 300 billions dollars just in North America. That is really big business. What would happen if everyone were well? There is no money in health. You see, good health makes a lot of sense but it doesn't make a lot of dollars. Because everything they do is toxic. Every drug they use, prescription drugs, all drugs are liver toxic, bar none. If you've had amalgam fillings put in your mouth by dentists. It is highly toxic. There's cancer because most of the chemos are themselves carcinogens. To view the tumor as the cancer and we know the tumor is not the cancer. The cancer industry is 200 billions dollars a year. The more work they get, the more profit there is. You have to dismantle; If the truth ever came out about what we would need to do. 30% of people of females in America are at risk of getting, will get cancer of the breast. The ones that are already dead have been grossly mistreated by the medical profession and by the government that supposedly is supposed to encourage free research and development of all possibilities. Why would medical doctors who studied medicine and practice medicine and are heavily funded by pharmaceutical companies why would they go and look into vitamins? That they never had the answer orthomolecular. And as more and more of our population start taking their health into their own hands, there's going to be even more and more of changes. It can't go on the way it is. The system is failing apart. We must make nutrition the primary prevention strategy for the population. You are what you eat. You are everything that you have ever done to yourself. The choices you make directly affect the outcome of your life. - (Food Matters Documentary in Netflix)
Money is a very controlling entity of you let it do so, and yes it did escalate quickly. One time it was “oh this is how to get rich” and then “being rich also makes you question your own sanity!”
Brazil is the opposite of that, specially when comes to meritocracy and competition. Here in Brazil, you can't get a job unless an insider is your friend or relative, no matter how good you are. People hate competition here.
I thought the people of rich land don't go on holiday but then a few seconds later we learn that they go on expensive holidays several times a year. This country is confusing but reminds me of The Lego Movie.
absolutely true....I live in Silicon Valley, and this is the perfect description of our daily life....6 years here and still no close friends...very sad but very true.
So either: Be Rich and be Mentally unstable- Have I chosen the right career? What if I never get promoted? Etc... Or Be Poor and be Physically Unstable- Will you get enough for dinner? How long can you keep working until your back pain is just too much? Etc...
There's always a balanced way to life. This is a theoretical video of how to maximize one thing, wealth. When in reality, there is a lot more to life and most people don't only prioritize wealth.
Sadly, this video is REAL and ACCURATE. I previously taught English to students from Korea and Japan which one could consider as "rich" countries. Based on what my students told me about what life is like in those countries, the definitions/descriptions put forth in this video fit those countries. . . . Then they tell me about the social pressures creating depression, alcoholism and suicides which are very common.
If that video is real, why is it that Qatar, a muslim nation has the highest GDP per capita of between $130-145k per year? Then after that you have Luxembourg which is a Monarchy, followed by countries like Norway that are socialist countries. What's funny is the countries that follow the kinds of behaviours described don't even make the top 10 list (aside from the US). If you really want to know what makes a country rich, a well managed government + oil/natural gases = riches.
Huh? I don't know where to begin with your assertions?. . . I wish I had more time to get into a protracted TH-cam discussion but instead I'm going to put your thoughts for you and all the Internet to see and scrutinize: 1.) Are you saying that countries like Japan and Korea are not rich countries? 2.) This is because they are not "rich enough" because they don't belong to the "Top 10" richest countries? 3.) Which all of these leads to your conclusion of "what makes a country rich" are plentiful "oil/natural gases" (a "well-managed government" was already a given and considered in the video). Let's follow your LOGIC then, what you're saying is all boiled down to; "All ATHLETIC BOYS have RED CAPS. Johnny DOESN'T have a RED CAP. Therefore, Johnny is NOT athletic."
In Qatar, only a small percentage are actually citizens. Most people are foreign migrant workers, many of whom are badly mistreated. Qatar also has a vast abundance of natural oil wealth, skewing the game. Luxembourg fits exactly into the mold described in the video (I should know, I live there), as do the Scandinavian ones (I should know, I've visited them). They are democratic nations with high suicide rates, high productivity and demanding cultures of success. Just because they have a social safety net to prevent people from falling too far doesn't negate these "cultural factors".
Norway and the other scandinavion countries are not socialist. I don't know why so many people seem to believe this, the truth is that they are capitalist just like the rest of Europe, just with slighly more welfare and social security. The cultures are very competitive, materialist, and capitalist, much like what is shown in the video, though not entirely. Ps: i live there
William Bengt Sorry mate; I meant to say socialist democracy, I just inadvertently called it a socialism because a lot of american media refer your country as such. I looked it up though; I now get the distinction. At the same time I was simply trying to say that having a country that is a combination of being socialistic and competitive is ideal, because it drives materialism as a result of competition moreso than allowing companies to get too big to fail and then hoard their resources. I like your country a lot though; that's why I made a reference to it.
+Vaibhav Gupta only when you have a capitalistic mindset ingrained in your culture. It's hard to make people richer if you choose to define richness with the possession of limited resources.
tjrsasea Singapore is way more laid back than Hong-Kong which is absolutely merciless ( I worked in both places for the same company, just different branch)
4:52 "In Richland, people don't take many holidays." 5:10 "They pay a significant premium to have a car ... and for flying far away on holiday many times a year"
What they mean is that they fly away for all their vacations, so that the twice or thrice a year they do take admittedly brief vacations they go far away.
When the mid-level and higher level employees "holiday" they take their work with them in physical or electronic form for fear of falling behind or being seen as not committed to their job or career. That reputation can damage their chances of progressing upwards in the company. Nobody is genuinely taking a holiday from work if they're still doing work related activities everytime they are "away on holiday". Granted the holiday references did seem like a contradiction in the video and could have been explained with more clarity but as someone who's worked in those environments I'm hoping that I've correctly understood and conveyed the drift of what they were attempting to say.
I was doing a research on how to make my country rich. After looking at this video, i think, just being rich comes at a heavy price and i agree with whatever is said here.
I guess making people comfortably happy with their lives in a way that makes them work more tho "less efficient" is a more better goal to try to achieve..
That is not how to make a country rich. This is one-sided criticism of the modern world at best. In a truly rich country people would first of all be aware of the fact that they are actually much less successful in their careers if they let anxiety and negativity rule, and secondly they would place value on much more important things than merely how famous someone is or how much money someone makes.
+PoisonHeadcrab Not sure I understand the goal of this video. Is it just to show that the goal of more wealth alone is useless ? It's all about balance. The UN report on World Happiness says: "Happy people live longer, are more productive, earn more, and are also better citizens. Well-being should be developed both for its own sake and for its side-effects." Looking at the report, lots of wealthy countries at the top where state provides for you in case of problems (illness, death of a breadwinner, etc.). Countries like Norway or Switzerland. What is interesting is Costa Rica is also ranked very high, even though it's less rich. But it's one of the greenest countries in the world and one of a few countries without an army. It ranks very high on topics like human development and equality in comparison to income. Also has a good history on political stability. The sun shines throughout the year.
autohmae I don't understand the point of this video entirely either. Money is certainly not everything and there are a lot of things that can go wrong if either a person or a country as a whole tries to pursue short term wealth at the cost of everything else. However if we were to imagine a country that is "better" and has happier and more fulfilled citizens, more than any country currently on this planet, then that country would be VERY rich. Wealth consists of two parts, first having a lot of money and secondly, the part this video COMPLETELY ignores, USING this money wisely. Why would a country want to be rich? It would want to be rich so it could provide more to it's citizens. So it's citizens would have better education, social services and support from the government, so they could work what they want and as much or as little as they want. However when you have such a toxic culture as depicted in the video, the people and the country might all make lots of money, but all that money goes to fancy cars and clothes instead of education, health and well-being. If the money is used right however, then a rich country would also be the best, and happiest country. Period.
+PoisonHeadcrab Well not really, i would argue that richland's citizen can be rich while being ruled by anxiety and negativity. Afterall both feelings are just love, just on the other side of the spectrum, towards who? towards yourself. Just replace negativity and anxiety with love and youll get it. . Its what drives people to take that one step. Its alarming depressing rates are balanced out by the indulgence rate. THus the creativity, production rate evens out even maybe outperform the model of kindness and security. "BUT BUT! WHAT ABOUT THE MISUNDERSTOOD GENIUS?? ALBERT EINSTEIN FAILS A LOT IN HIS STUDY YET HES THE SMARTEST MAN ALIVE, RICHLAND KILLS THAT POSSIBILITY" True enough, But logically Einstein is one man while richland produce many high quality human resource, well basically, do you want 1 Einstein or 20 people with a quarter of Einstein. Put it simply, anxiety, negativity, competitiveness, envy arent really that different from security, positive thinking, joy, and sharing. Its just the other side of the spectrum, the left ones is loving yourself and the other side is sharing your love. Here you are afraid of not producing anything the others because you love sharing what you produce, both are still producing, the product may differ, maybe one produces hi-tech alarm system, while the other 7 tasted candy that last 5 years.
Rieza Scarlet The human brain is wired to see negative feelings as more important, they are wired to our subconscious. Probably to avoid danger when our ancestors were still in nature. That is the only reason why it works.
+autohmae and its also what makes the indulgence factor works really really well. Thank you for pointing that out. Lets take the instinct as a whole not just one aspect. Richland pushes its people to be as rational as possible, as little spiritual as possible since its what makes people took unpredictable action which may or may not result in the act of produce and all was retributed by the high indulgence of instincts.
The video started well, but all of a sudden he started describing Japan and South Corea and it became completely depressing. Thought I believe you can build a balanced society where the people is taught to fight for excellence meanwhile enjoying life, building a true social network and sharing love with their close ones.
I agree. The inference and deduction here seems a bit too simple to capture the real patterns. It is depressing, and not optimistic. I have an optimistic mind that we can eventually find a way to be both rich and happy.
@@mr6462 "we" okay how? People like you say these things but are you really doing anything to push society towards that? No. People like you are optimistic and believe in shit like that but none of you try. You just hope someone else will fix the problems for you.
I generally have liked most of the videos on "The School of Life". This is a one-sided criticism and lacks the educational value some of the other videos contain. This is an opinion piece at best.
+Caty the Cat The fact that I exist is not an opinion that can be changed easily or legally. I am a man, I take up space and use resources. I exist and that is a fact. This is not the novel 1984 by Orwell like you suggest.
Logan Shirley you could be my imaginnation, that is the thing, the only thing i can know is that I exist in some way, the only thing you can know is that you exist in some way
+Caty the Cat If I am indeed your imagination then you're brain is certainly the best of any thing that may exist. For the 17 years of my life have been more diverse than a college diversity department. Certainly this is a good philosophical question, to which there may never be an answer to. I exist as much as you can know you exist.
1. Work Defines who you are (Similar to some Eastern Asian countries, Japan,Korea,Taiwan) 2. Love is extrinsic (pretty common in East Asia) 3. Optimism (same) 4. Media (US) 5. Spare Time (pretty common in Asia) 6. Parents not spending time with kids (pretty common for Asian middle classes ). In Korea and Japan, stay-at-home moms are common. 7. Fashion (Pretty common for upper middle classes) 8. Celebrities(US) 9. Meritocracy(Asian countries) 10. Religions( China and Vietnam?) 11. Weather(England)
"Oddly enough"? Whaaaat? When it said richland or even modern capitalism, wasn't it obvious that this is going to be a critical reflection on the society and culture of the western world, especially the U.S.?
Let's hope we finally get the fuck off this planet, and go establish some mass resource development on some other planet, less chance of us killing each other over resources.
@B Sandstorm It's spot on, while things are bad, but they used to be worse, while some regions might be quite unstable, our world has steadily progressed overall (atleast until 2019). The most important thing is to remember that we, as humans are inherently imperfect and that we can't possibly create a "perfect world order". But we _can_ keep a reasonably flexible mindset and we can always try to improve the things, while obviously keeping in mind that we can't make anything perfect and that someone else can easily improve upon our work in the future. Thank you
I love scandinavian countries. I got friend from Finland and we talk a lot for this topic. Why? Climate or just well developed economic make norwegian people so lone and antisocial even I m wondering how exist babies there and population
@@abdalsalamsalah8183 It depends. I know people go to the city and visit each other friday and Saturday and drink alcohol. Or people do sports. Fotball, Tae-kwondo, and different sports hobbies. But Its not like you can say hi to strangers so much as Africa (I guess) . But I do have a freand who is very sosial and visit people and say hi to strangers. And people like that. Hehe. But I can Imagine lot of people staying in homes on pc or smartphone. Including my selfe. The things said in this video is around 75 - 80% true for norway I believe. Some things is more true for Japan or USA I think.
Coming from a poor country I clicked this hoping for answers to our corrupt state. But it looks more like an analysis of the current state of the world. Sigh!
i think its best you clicked it cause apparently , even a developed state has nothing to offer. We are all obliged to come up with new policies as a 21th century generation that will work for us.
point number 10, that whole "winner" and "loser" concept is one we really need to remove from our society. I work as a psychologist and i see it all the time. People who are jobless/homeless, people who have never had a relationship, people who don't have a lot of friends. We judge them as losers all the time and make them feel even worse, even laughing at their sorrows. My wife is American but her roots are in a tine 3rd world African nation (sao tome e Principe). Even though they are poor they have a sense of community, they don't judge, they pull each other up. Here in the so called developed world we have such high and quite frankly "basic" expectations of how we should live that we just isolate everyone who doesn't quite make it or fit these categories. We have all the buildings and cars but no togetherness, no love. I really wanna leave this country one day.
The problem is without the winner loser concept you get a generation of lazy people, like my generation. I might not be the hardest worker but at least when I don't succeed I blame myself, too often people want to blame society for their lack of success when really its just their own fault.
+Raisin Toast This is a faults dichotomy you draw there! The issue with the winner/looser concept is, that it pretends, that everybody can be a winner, if they just work and try hard enough and that can't be. Same with the "American dream".... "Everybody can be wealthy if they try and work hard" just doesn't work... it us impossible! So most will be losers and there is nothing we can do about it. (Of course an individual could try harder and become a winner, but while doing so he turns someone else who works a little less or has a little less luck into a looser) Even the "looser" can be a productive part of society, but with to much pressure to become a winner (something they will never achieve) they might break, shoot up a school or take their own life and damage the society!
Jakob Schulze The winner loser concept isn't meant to be a guarantee of you being a winner but it is something you have to work towards. Of course everyone can't be winners, life isn't like that, the winner loser is an incentive not a guarantee of success.
+Raisin Toast what's the point of having an incentive that a significant proportion of the population will never reach. what's worse is that they are expected to reach this goal or deemed "losers". when you see someone who has never been to college, or still living with his parents, or is still a virgin, you immediately isolate them. I know maybe you have your life in order but believe me when I say there is no worse feeling than being an outcast of society, I've seen "failures" with my own two eyes, our society is not nice. As the video says, the winners benefit while the losers cry and commit suicide.
+Raisin Toast Like I said that is a false dichotomy! There are not only the options of "you are a looser, it is your fault try harder" and "there are no winners/losers, everyone is equally productive". Everybody can have a positive impact on society, even if he himself isn't one of the winners! Do you really wanna promote a system, which by default makes most ppl losers and like the comment you referred to said, has serious negative psychological consequences on some of those ppl. The ppl in western society are getting more and more unhappy, take drugs to "perform" better, etc. many of those losers turn into outcasts and aren't part of the regular society anymore. Some of them seek attention or some kind of fame/recognition and start shooting up a school or jump out of the next window.
Best video I've seen in a really long time. So true, especially the part where society calls "unsuccessful" people losers, only because they've enjoyed a privileged life and never seen how things are outside that bubble. I think this is officially my favorite School of Life video! Keep enlightening! Would love to see a video on animal rights and the cognitive dissonance between loving some animals and slaughtering others in the future :)
Not true. Unless you are the toxic kind of person that spread this kind of mindset. Unless you are the person that is so caught up in everything you fail to realise what is important. Unless you are the kind of person that complains about everything without realising how lucky Singapore is to be alive. This isn't Singapore. This is the life of the shitty ppl in Singapore who only think about money.
“In my kingdom you must run as fast as you can, just to stay in place. And if you wish to go anywhere you must run twice as fast as that.” Red Queen, Alice in Wonderland
Leo N nice troll nice bait, but just to take you up on it, how in anyway is this Denmark? It's the exact opposite lol. denmark promotes individuality, happy media stories, kapitalism doesnt thrive to well, nor does capitalism. Denmark and the nordic countries are like a liberal mix of socialism and kapitalism
+Oliver Joshua Jacob It's quite the different story we get all the negetive effects that the government has, we also get the negatives that are in this video for the personal well being. overall this video is only half like what is real life.
Unfortunately, it has a point: it works. Rich countries are in fact wealthy, but you can't have everything, you'll end up with de buffs on one side or the other, and frankly you really don't want to end up as a poor country. You get wealth, but more stress and anxiety. At the end of the day, it works, sometimes you can't have everything.
Index to cultural factors: 1:33 1. Work defines who you are - what’s on your business card is simply who you are. Friendships are usually linked to work and involve covert status rivales. You have to invest an enormous amount of time and effort in your career, less because you have to have money, but mostly because you can have a functioning social identity. 2:27 2. Love is extrinsic, not intrinsic - Parents value their children's scientific achievements very highly, and young people may become convinced that they will be better and more loved human beings when they have good grades in school. A belief is beginning to emerge that to be accepted in society, one must be the best in every field of science. 2:45 3. Optimism - From childhood, we are recommended to set ourselves the goal of becoming a rich and educated person in the future. We spend the years of our youth studying and we are convinced that our dreams will soon come true. However, when we enter middle age, we experience a huge disappointment related to the fact that we are at a much lower level of professional activity, not the one we have worked for all our lives so far. We are constantly bombarded with slogans: "you can do it!" or "You can be everything!" It increases our disappointment when we do not have the strength or the ability to achieve our goals. However, it makes us stay motivated all the time, which produces stress and depression. Although people don’t wanna talk about their emotions and weaknesses, because if they do, they will not fit the pattern of modern member of Richland. 3:27 4. Everyone is anxious all the time - Diseases of civilization are also caused by a lack of sleep caused by the fact that people of Richland cannot think about anything other than work, with which everything in their lives begins to be associated with. People need to be constantly alert in order to stay in their social and career positions that define them. 3:53 5. The consumer is king - In Richland, everything must be for the good of the customer. Consumers keeps the companies and corporations alive. To attract more customers and keep the attention of existing ones, the workforce does its best to make its products more pleasing. There are constantly sales, contests, customer service 24/7, stores are open longer and more often, people work on Sundays and holidays just to exist in the market. Such a system of continuous work introduces a kind of "rat race". Firms compete with each other on who will be more productive and who will do more. 4:22 6. The news is always terrifying - In addition to motivational slogans, we are surrounded by the media everywhere, and in them - news. Nowadays it is very difficult to live without knowledge about what is happening in the world today. Thanks to easy access to the media, we are able to find out almost everything that is currently happening (and has been happening) in different parts of the globe. This constant flow of information is heavy on our mind. We are more tired, we have to constantly filter which information we need and which we do not. There is also a lot of fake and contrary news around, which we are not always able to verify. Much more often than about positive things, the news gives unpleasant and disheartening information. In response, people again set their goals on having their material existence: you have money - you have influence - you are safe. 4:50 7. Spare time - As I mentioned before, the people of Richland have a hard time separating work from private life. This line often becomes blurred. Very often, the sense of individuality fades - we are unable to say what gives us pleasure, so we take advantage of widely praised pleasures. These are expensive cars, the newest phones, plane journeys, generally anything that is expensive. IIt is unheardable talking about pleasures that do not require spending money. People who write poetry or take pleasure from walking in the forests are considered eccentric and simply strange. Children are brought up in the absence of their constantly busy parents, which makes them aggressive adults, with a deficit of affection, spoiled by materialism and, like their parents, likely to be workaholics. 5:46 8. Fashion rules - In Richlands there's a pattern of what is acceptable to society and what is not. People like you when you keep up with trends, are eco-friendly, eat exotic food, have specific political views and you are generally speaking, up to date. You don't follow - you are out of the game. 6:20 9. Celebrities sparkle - In successive societies, cults of music, internet and film celebrities arise. On the side there are wise men, monks and traditional faith in god. In order to stay in the spotlight, scandals, changes, new songs, new films, new trends are necessary. It takes a moment for a celebrity to let their guard down to be forgotten. Because of constant presence of celebrities in the media, ordinary citizens repeatedly compare to them. Again, it makes the people of Richland work even more efficiently. 6:51 10. Meritocracy - The belief that a person functions as an individual and that only they are responsible for their fate is promoted . When they are successful, they are overwhelmed with pride and satisfaction related to self-fulfillment, but in moments of failure they are often overwhelmed by loneliness and self-esteem drops. The consequence of such tendencies is suicide, with is very common in the Richlands. 7:23 11. Little religion - I have already mentioned that faith is becoming more and more neglected by people. Spiritual goods are appreciated less and less, while material ones are becoming more and more important. God's followers are often ridiculed and considered foolish. Instead of worshiping God, the people of Richland choose a worship of materialism: money is the most important value, and that alone matters in life. 7:49 12. Bad weather - Bad weather is common for highly developed countries. It is caused by geographic location (Great Britain, the Netherlands, Scandinavian countries) and air pollution caused by endless construction sites and huge traffic due to large numbers of inhabitants. Bad weather has a negative impact on the emotional state of citizens and shows them that mother nature is no longer on their side and that they have to earn all goods for themselves with their hard work and commitment. You're welcome.
this quote at 5:40 really defines me as a person today. My parents split when i was 6 and i was always told i couldn't do anything. I try to work harder than eveyrone i know.
This is basically a description of living in the Netherlands. I'm glad 'm leaving that place soon;) Don't get me wrong, it's a very prosperous, developed and industrialized country with great institutions but this video literally describes the mindset and life of the average Dutch person.
Obviously it’s important to have a balance, but different people find meaning and motivation in different things. You might consider them arbitrary, but going far in and succeeding your career because it makes you feel accomplished is not a bad thing. Without purpose in life, we become depressed and nihilistic.
and then add Feminism, Cultural Marxism, Affirmative Action, "equal outcomes", and white males no longer serve any purpose in any society on the Third Stone from the Sun. FML. Nihilism does have it's privileges I will admit. Laws are irrelevant. Money does not exist. Sex is over-rated albeit underwhelming social construct, marriage and education are failed institutions and mortgages are an inflated bubble, and work is nominal. (personally, I'm looking for a job that "blows"). Cheers Brendan.
Rusty Shackleford We are not living in the 1900s anymore. There's no such thing as an American dream anymore. It's not "only in America", you idiot. It's more like anywhere in the world other than developing and communist countries. Cause you can find "freedom" anywhere in the world these days.
+Eric Smith not sure what generation you guys are but I'm the current generation. Everyone is basically pushed to go to college and so we have this huge student loan bubble. My generation also has a high suicide rate. When my dad was a kid people did not have any issues going into professions that pay decent but is hard labor. Now it's seen as a joke and everyone is trying to become doctors or lawyers. Personally I've already gotten a degree in Computer Science. Yes, we do have corruption, so I'll have to say that this mostly describes life in the US from the viewpoint from a 20 year old.
+Sulfen I think you actually got the point of the video. I think we're supposed to see that the most "ideal" country western culture has taught us to imagine sounds awful when you're not blinded by the next iPhone or worrying about not losing your job and thusly your personal identity. Perhaps. I should add, what strikes the listener the most is the vapid dehumanization that starts to happen near the end of the video ,Specially the part about suicide. The work force is seen as fuses who will eventually burn out. The only consequence of this is that you have to change the fuse, hire someone else.
Here in the Philippines, we’re striving to become rich land. We’ve had enough of this underdevelopment and corruption. We’ll deal with the depression of rich land when we get there. I don’t want to be one of those who stops striving to become rich land just because of this video. Living in a corrupt and often financially challenged society is a curse in itself. That’s what we’re trying to fix in the Philippines, Poor land.
Andrew Pestano it's not only the US, countries like china do it through subsidizing their companies so they can undercut american companies prices (steel is a good example). the EU does this through their argiculture subsidies and food storaging as well to the point where their milk products are competitive in africa and undercut their prices, so much a farmer in europe will get less paid for a liter of milk than farmers in cameron.
I think this video is about how to achieve maximum productivity. I believe we should strive for a balance between excellent productivity and a good mental health.
One of your best video so far, with a great description of what modern capitalism is. Now we need to bring up solutions and make them popular, as people criticizing capitalism are often depict as communists or nationalists (rightly so most of the time sadly). Would you do a video about the 19th century anarchism ? I think it fits fairly well the philosophy of your channel.
For example in japan they go to europe or america for just 1 week lol. Most japanese can-t take long vacations. The trip is so long you lose like 2 or more days just in the trips. But probably they don't even know their own city.
A holiday in this country is more of a thing to impress your friends and family. It doesn't really mean anything and the least it makes you happy or relaxed.
I know that plenty of people think negative about wealthy countries and their values, but this video hits a level of cynicism that makes me wonder whether it´s supposed to make you think about western values, or if it´s just a parody on how anti capitalists think.
Coming from a third world country, i watched this in hopes of helping my nation. But to my surprise, you just made me realize that i should be thankful for the low suicide rate and depression lurking in my community. How its often a taboo for us to ostracized those who are professionally left behind, how some of things you mention are materially far from our reach, but most are blessing in form of manners and virtues. Thank you so much. Subscribing now.
This is such a jaw dropping video, everything was right on point. Great depiction of rich land and that is what the video should be named. I see all of this to be true .

In Islam there's this thing called zakat where everyone is obligated to give percentage of their wealth every year. If everyone does this it will boost the countries up.also manage inflation rate and focus on long term growth.
A lot of people don't. Besides even though south korean capitalism has a ton of gaping flaws (see the video), i would rather be anxious and have there be bad weather than be in a concentration camp with no food.
+mike tyson "transferable slave injustice memories..." Because you have to deal with the burden of slavery that people hundreds of years ago (that might not have even been your ancestors) had to deal with.
I just realized that all the countries that have working socialism (mainly Scandinavian countries) were rich when their ideas started and vice versa. Moral of the story, Capitalise before Socialising.
@@stephenelkington4971 the only way norway can afford their social programmes is because of their lower population and abundance of minerals and resources
I would actually like to live in a world with richland, and maybe live there. Due to the technological advances it would generate, it could speed up our path to complete automation of work, so they wouldn't even suffer that long, and the entire world would enjoy the benefits.
+Metsuryu Well the fact there isn't much regulation combined with advanced automation could produce a terminator-like situation. Its a risk but hey, maybe you'll be lucky and they don't want to do that.
i would join them too. i already work my ass off compared to lazy-ass "colleagues", might as well be doing that for much more purposeful goal, amongst like-minded folk...
+StormyDmaster I find it really unlikely that AI will result in a a terminator-like situation. I'm not saying that AI is not potentially very dangerous, but probably not for that reason. You should be more concerned about the paperclip maximizer scenario or the AI being used by evil or stupid people to do bad things.
I thought he was going to talk about how these "rich" countries invaded other countries, took the land, and either killed the people or forced them into labor!
Why did you disable comments and ratings on your 'Why some countries are poor and others rich' video? It reflects worse on you than bad comments. Not only does censoring criticism make you look weak but I can't even look at the criticism to see how much I agree and disagree with so I wonder if perhaps the whole video is just false.
The comments became infiltrated by fights between an alt-right agitation movement and marxists. It grew very ugly and it seemed wisest to shut things down. If, however, you have things to tell us, please free to do so here.
I just came from that video, and although you raised some good points even those weren't explored fully. Also how could you miss out colonalisation?? You can't talk about world poverty and exclude it. You also missed out the cotinued interference from Western countries and slavery. The whole video had a very Eurocentric outlook to it. Corn, yam and cassava are carbohydrate rich foods from the tropics?
They should have brought up colonalisation, but it is far less important than you would think, problems of poor countries in middle east and Africa stem primary from bad politics, institutions and culture not because british or french ruled them 70 years ago.
Imperialism and colonialism actively created systems that exploited and continue to exploit as well as promote corruption. This is also is a huge factor in why they are rich. I think it's far more important than you think.
Britain and France continue to be very rich countries even though they do not have colonies for last 50 years ,USA never had colonies and it is one of the richest countries in the world, this idea that everything wrong with poor countries is result of west and capitalism is laughable.
You forgot that also in Richland they teach the population that there is no more natural resources left in the land and that the government and the people should focus on working hard in order to make themselves even richer.
To be honest, this sounds a lot like South Korea. The pressure to succeed, high suicide rate, hyper consumerism and materialism. Also, it is one of the most capitalistic countries in Asia.
Absolutely!
From now I will call South Korea the Richland
Same with japan
It also sounds like every capitalist country on planet earth. Korea has no monopoly as richland.

Growing up as an autistic child those words hit different. I remember as a child when parents would discourage their children from playing with me in the name of "you might also become as dumb as he is in academics". I lost my best friend and I had to grow up without friends and worst of it all teachers also used to discourage kids from playing with me. If I knew what suicide was back when I was a child I'm afraid I wouldn't be here today

yea, i became depressed, cuz the title isn't this video
I became more and more dissatisfied with my country the longer I went into this video (because of the likeness of Richland and my country - in fact, they're almost identical!). Though, what I took from it was that if you are conscious about these factors you can work against them, and live the good life (defined by YOU, and not those around you).
- Be satisfied with what you have - don't strive for material goods.
- Try to live a good life - not the good life defined by those around you. (Yeah, I repeated it!)
- Stop competing with your co-workers, and try to find a healthy job environment.
And secondly, if you lose your job or go broke, it's usually not that big of a deal (compared to some guy in Sudan going broke)
- Don't follow the news - it's a waste of time and detrimental to your mental health (just google "why you should stop reading the news, and you'll have tons of good arguments).

Kuya Leinad that’s a very limited perspective...
Or have a balanced life.
yeah Kuya, this video doesn't take any dialectical approaches...good or bad only
There's always a balanced way to life. This is a theoretical video of how to maximize one thing, wealth. When in reality, there is a lot more to life and most people don't only prioritize wealth.
In the USA, yes pretty much.
In first world countries in the other hand, you can have a good life with an humble job.
Huh? I don't know where to begin with your assertions?. . . I wish I had more time to get into a protracted TH-cam discussion but instead I'm going to put your thoughts for you and all the Internet to see and scrutinize:
1.) Are you saying that countries like Japan and Korea are not rich countries?
2.) This is because they are not "rich enough" because they don't belong to the "Top 10" richest countries?
3.) Which all of these leads to your conclusion of "what makes a country rich" are plentiful "oil/natural gases" (a "well-managed government" was already a given and considered in the video). Let's follow your LOGIC then, what you're saying is all boiled down to;
"All ATHLETIC BOYS have RED CAPS.
Nice description of Japan.
This also came into my mind after he said that people in richland don't take vacations and spend more time in office.

4:52 "In Richland, people don't take many holidays."
5:10 "They pay a significant premium to have a car ... and for flying far away on holiday many times a year"
no holidays not cuz they have no money but of fear to lose their jobs
Bwahahahah!

That's the whole truth
Well-being should be developed both for its own sake and for its side-effects."
Looking at the report, lots of wealthy countries at the top where state provides for you in case of problems (illness, death of a breadwinner, etc.). The sun shines throughout the year.
autohmae
I don't understand the point of this video entirely either.
ALBERT EINSTEIN FAILS A LOT IN HIS STUDY YET HES THE SMARTEST MAN ALIVE, RICHLAND KILLS THAT POSSIBILITY"
True enough, But logically Einstein is one man while richland produce many high quality human resource, well basically, do you want 1 Einstein or 20 people with a quarter of Einstein.
Balance and excellence don't go hand in hand
I agree. The inference and deduction here seems a bit too simple to capture the real patterns. It is depressing, and not optimistic.

"Oddly enough"? Whaaaat? When it said richland or even modern capitalism, wasn't it obvious that this is going to be a critical reflection on the society and culture of the western world, especially the U.S.?

I never really noticed how much emphasis our culture places on wealth and one's job until now
well, not exactly, because most of the American populace is religious in some way.
Yes but America is an exception in this regard most other rich countries are indeed secular.

This video makes me sad :( the future is dark and mysterious for young individuals so let's all hope for the best.
Let's hope we finally get the fuck off this planet, and go establish some mass resource development on some other planet, less chance of us killing each other over resources.
Push it to the Limit good fucking luck
@B Sandstorm It's spot on, while things are bad, but they used to be worse, while some regions might be quite unstable, our world has steadily progressed overall (atleast until 2019).
The most important thing is to remember that we, as humans are inherently imperfect and that we can't possibly create a "perfect world order". But we _can_ keep a reasonably flexible mindset and we can always try to improve the things, while obviously keeping in mind that we can't make anything perfect and that someone else can easily improve upon our work in the future.
Thank you
The main problem for me in Norway is loneliness. But Norway is also a greate country.
I love scandinavian countries. I got friend from Finland and we talk a lot for this topic. Why? Climate or just well developed economic make norwegian people so lone and antisocial even I m wondering how exist babies there and population
Do people not sociable in Norway ?.

Coming from a poor country I clicked this hoping for answers to our corrupt state. But it looks more like an analysis of the current state of the world. Sigh!
Lol same here
Just do everything opposite to what the video says and you're golden. :)
Lol same
i think its best you clicked it cause apparently , even a developed state has nothing to offer.
+Raisin Toast
This is a faults dichotomy you draw there!
(Of course an individual could try harder and become a winner, but while doing so he turns someone else who works a little less or has a little less luck into a looser)
Even the "looser" can be a productive part of society, but with to much pressure to become a winner (something they will never achieve) they might break, shoot up a school or take their own life and damage the society!
+Raisin Toast
Like I said that is a false dichotomy!

+Aqier No matter what happens. We will always be prisoners of the evolution of society.
Index to cultural factors:

Now it's seen as a joke and everyone is trying to become doctors or lawyers. Personally I've already gotten a degree in Computer Science.

By the middle of the video, shit was so deep I couldn't see the bottom.
You forgot that also in Richland they teach the population that there is no more natural resources left in the land and that the government and the people should focus on working hard in order to make themselves even richer.
wow very deep. the truth of cultural factors is hard to swallow
This is the definition of South Korea and Japan.
*Soviet anthem starts getting louder in the background*
Windows Vista Germany alone is richer than all of ex-soviet and eastern bloc combined btw.
