My guess is that it has been outshone by the Hughes Crab. They were the LMS' defacto mogul, and there are technically three in prservation compared to the sole survivor of the Stanier mogul (which I've never even heard of as a class). It's probably the same situation as how the ex-LNWR Super Ds outshone the LMS-built 0-8-0s.
I was watching some of your old videos and when i checked your channel again, woah! Another video uploaded. Thank you so much for your time and content Sam! Greetings from Mexico
The smokebox / matt/gloss thing depends on the locomotive age and location- various types of paint were used on smokeboxes, some with different chemical construction to the pigment in order to withstand the heat and therefore prevent rusting, however, according to my research ( spent a few years worrying about this) it depends on when and where they were outshopped, it helps to spend ridiculous amounts of time on colour original footage on TH-cam- an easy way to sacrifice an evening or two, so you pays yer money, and necessary splash out on a tin of Humbrol 33 matt black if you are modelling a specific engine at a specific time... thanks Sam- want to see a baccy std4 mogul review which must surely be ready for a revamp, and of course the maunsell moguls must be in the sights of rapido etc al...
Well, once again you hit the nail on the head with this one and I do like the look of the thing. On a different note, I purchased two of the weathered cars you had in the latest sale, so I consider you Santa now and can't wait for my stocking stuffer. Great review, Jersey Bill
Bought both 42968 and 42969 when they were first released, love them to bits, useful medium sized locos. Interestingly between these, the Crabs and later Ivatt’s 4MTs the LMS and it’s successors had a lot of Moguls on rosta
I was running mine today, it's a good model which I got for a decent price. And it's good for what it is - if only Bachmann did a Black 5 in OO gauge as well.....
Surely there must be a market for a no gimmicks well modelled loco that runs well at a fair price. This would probably help to get more people into the hobby instead of outpricing at lot unles you want toys.
A similar thing exists for the Robert Riddles designed standard 4 mt. I have a Bachmann standard 4mt in a 2-6-0 wheel configuration and a Hornby 4 mt in a 4-6-0 wheel configuration. Apparently the 2-6-0 stayed in service until 1967.
Funny story Sam, I actually bought one of these just before Hattons close down. She runs absolutely wonderful, although the rods are a bit bent she still looks the part. Cheers Jasper & Willow
The Stanier Crab. Was it any better though? it was more standard in the LMS Stanier regime so it should have been more econimical overall. I don't know the answer but the Hughes crab was a hard act to follow. The Hughes Crab could have been better if the Midland tender hadn't been fitted.
Have you reviewed this before Sam? Can't believe you'd have had a model in your collection for nearly 5 years and not covered it on the channel. This one of my favourite models in my own collection, I've got the 2 you've not, the BR versions. Like you said the Mogul's weight is impressive. Apart from the Black 5 compare it to Bachmann's own 4mt 4-6-0 and the difference in weight is remarkable. Great job.
Similar story with the Collet 260 43XX. More were built, but to meet increasing loads Churchward switched the production to the Granges and Halls. On the LMS, the 5 gave much better operational flexibility than the 4, without big cost penalties.
i never lied the. original. They were no better than Hughes's Crab and if anything slightly worse although not as bad as Stanier's Class 3 2-6-2. tank. He brought GWs idea of superheating, which was inferior to that already in use by the LMS. Fortunately they only built 40 of them before they started building the Black 5s, which really were a good investment for the LMS.
I have the BR Lined Black as preserved version. I’m surprised they never offered a version of the preserved one with the Stanier Tender like it had for quite awhile in preservation.
Never thought of it obscure, then again my dad has shares in preslerved loco and when was younger and dad had own steam loco on the SVR then the Stanier Mogul Fund used to let dad make use of their support coach at Bewdley on the back line so used to meet the team that worked on the restoration back in the 80’s. Really nice guys and well organised for preservation making sure that generate and raise the money for the next overhaul which is Had a run on the return to operation run last Christmas down the Severn Valley Railway.
such a shame it didn't go mainline after that last overhaul, that was the reported plan originally. would of made a nice change from the relentless parade of black 5s.
@ sadly with 5ft 6” driving wheels would be limited to 50mph on the mainline these days. I suspect pathing could be an issue now plus the extra cost in having the mainline equipment that need these days. A bit like swanage finding that the extension to wareham is not paying with the extra costs vs revenue raised. It has run mainline previously but not sure would get enough revenue now to pay its way with that.
Word had it that at a distance the Stanier crab resembled a Jubilee and i can see why! It had a taller stack or chimney similar to the Jubilee. They were a powerful loco, and well suited to parcels trains and used frequently on suburban work. In certain areas it equalled the power of a five. It didnt have a steam dome like an early black five, just a combined top feed /dome. As always from you an excellent and well balanced review on this lovely class of loco. Really enjoyed, cheers Nick.
Had an issue with my own stanier mogul a few years back, the weight in the body shell itself was putting so much strain on the model I kept smelling electronics from the model every time it ran. Took it out and it's run perfectly ever since
Great review Sam, just for interest there's a pub called the Great Mogul in maghull north liverpool it's on station road next to maghull railway station were the late Frank Hornby once lived. He also based his early model station buildings on maghull station 😊
Sam, although i don't have a layout i do like model railways, however i think i have to take you to task on one issue. I applaude your testing of slow running however, when i go to model railway shows very few owners of layouts even make any attempt at slow running and as oftern as not coupling up is completed with either a crunch!! or by hand. I suppose the quality of running on fixed layouts maybe better but i am not sure it is the imperative that you would like it to be. In closing - keep up the good work. I ensure your shows
A great review, much appreciated. Also did know about these. Looks great and well detailed. Always wondered about sprung buffers. What is the deal with these, do they actually work with tension lock couplers?
Don't think that I have heard of this class before, and I'm sure this will be the first time I have seen one, . Not sure that it is one I would look out for on the scond-hand market, as I usually like the slightly bigger locomotives! But I will still watch the review! (Edit) Do we really need/want working lamps on a steam loco? A firebox flicker is ok I guess, but not sure about worling lamps, not if they have light leaks
Interesting that the 1959-60 Ian Allan handbook shows these 2-6-0 Moguls as Class 6P 5F while its 4-6-0 brother was simply classed as "5" and had an indicated greater Tractive Effort than it's 4-6-0 brother at 26,290lbs vs 25,455lbs respectively. Both great beauties. Thanks for the great video.
Hi - You're not confusing the Stanier Mogul with the earlier heavier Hughes Midland mogul introduced just before grouping & sometimes referred to as the "Crab", because of the angle & operation of the valve gear? (I believe Lima produced a great "ho" model of this in the late 1970's?)
br redid the power scales. they took the lms system and applied it to the whole br network but they pushed loads of things up one step. so for example lms duchesses and princesses were classed 7p which was the highest on the lms, in lms days, in br days they were classed 8p ,which was the highest step on the br version of the passenger scale
@@andrewyoung749 Ah yes, that would make sense. The above mentioned '59-'60 Ian Allen h/book references the Hughes 2-6-0 "Crabs" - mentioned by John - also as 6P5F at TE = 26,580lbs, so still slightly greater than the Stanier 4-6-0, and both the Princess and Coronation 4-6-2s at 8P (TE = 40,285 and 40,000lbs resp.) Thanks for the info.
@@johngreenwood9247Hi. No, I was just quoting from the book. However the early HO Lima Hughes "Crab" model sounds interesting, especially as I now live across the pond in HO land. Would definitely get a few o gauge mk1s unfortunately they have been discontinued at least in ready to run form and they don’t seem to have a loco to match ☹️
what continually surprises me with new releases is their inconsistent nature. Like, how does a company decide if they're going to have sprung buffers or the level of detail in the cab etc. It seems to be random, maybe to hit a price point?

Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Could be worse could say the flying pigs designed by Staniers successor Ivatt.
