  • Debasis Mohanty was one of the unlikeliest hereo of Indian cricket the 1999 World cup. He was not a pacy bowler but he was suited to English conditions where he would nibble the around. By making this video, I like to show you his skill the ball.

he did not have any speed man. the action was also not sustainable with open chest and his speed was barely 130 . but could swing at will but india had plenty like that. bhuvi is a better version of him, RP/BALAJI and IRFAN before that!
there was no room for him with srinath/ajit/venki combo!
india began to change with back of the length hit the deck and also pitch it up bowler in zaheer/nehra/munaaf all could hit 140. result: world cup winning squad of 2011 and also all mentioned were part of 2007 t-20 as well( irfan/rp etc).
that is when india changed now you have everybody: bhum/shami/siraj/shraddha/nataraj/bhumi/yadav and more to come.
give sachin son a run as he can hit the deck. you never know. he bowls at 140's too. khalil had failed but you never know big stage where those genes can come out. I like his bowling.

The best of Debasis Mohanty was against Pakistan in the Toronto - Sahara cup ( 97-98) and specially against Saeed Anwar who was a class batsman of that era and was extremely consistent against India. Wonderful days, when cricket was not played every other day, there was an expectation before every series.

The unique thing about 1999 WC in England was that it was played with white Duke ball. After that tournament the white Duke ball was banned from ODIs because it swung a lot. Rahul Dravid was the highest scorer in 1999 WC with 461 runs. The white Kookaburra ball has been used ever since. Personally, I'm in the favor of swing! 😎

His first class bowling record much better than ajith agarkker... Agarkker took
299wickets in 110matches at an avge 30.. But mohanty took 416wickets in 116matches at an outstanding avg 21... But selectors always give first choice agarkker..... Its so bad

Please consider the fact that the majority of his wickets are taken against Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, Baroda i.e. against weaker teams in RANJI. Ashoke Dinda has also taken 400+ wickets does it mean he is a great bowler.

Actually agarkar not at all a match to Mohanty. Coming to batting how many times have u seen agarkar making 40+. It's very rare & that too he will score only when it's batting pitch. Now coming to bowling Mohanty used to bowl both inswing & outswing , similar to bhuvi where as agarkar just a medicore bowler neither swing neither pace. But yes, he is having some kind of batting advantage & that's why he got selected.

It is the misfortune of BCCI and India that such a class bowler was not nurtured like Zaheer, Bhuvaneshwar and their ilk. Mr.Debashish Mohanty was a class apart with any ball that was given to him, either the white Duke ball or red cherry. His overs particularly with the new ball, were almost unplayable and he got wickets with his genuine bowling skill.
Pity that India never realised his immense talent.
Mr. Mohanty now lives a humble life unlike his contemporaries who are drowned in riches. This is another paradox.
I appeal that a huge public opinion gains momentum to see that this brilliant player is rewarded adequately by the honchos of cricket.

Debasis Mohanty is from my state odisha. Myself have played few club level matches in the same club. He used to mentor us.
His career was cut short due to biased decision from bcci which used to favour Bengal bowlers like Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Mumbai bowler like Abey Kuruvilla . Mohanty could swing the ball much better way than both of them. One lacuna in his ability was non existent batting. Shukla was tried as a pace bowling allrounder.
