    The Blue Bottle Tree site recommends using Helmar Crystal Kote Matte spray in place of the PYM 2. PYM 2 was unavailable in Australia so they did testing to try to find something else that was similar and the matte worked really well for them.

    I use a very fine sponge to dab a very light coat of liquid clay onto the surface to seal in paint/pastel/pencil. This is a good replacement for the sealer for me.

    • @DonnaKatoArt
      @DonnaKatoArt  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      B, that is good as a final coat, the sealer offers separation in pencil layers and liquid doesn’t perform well for that. But, glad you mentioned it! 😊❤️🎉

    Hi Donna!
    I did some research online and found 4 possibilities (not in order of priority). I have not personally tried these, but I recently purchased Dorland's so maybe I'll give it a try. Anyway, they are:
    * Rustoleum Chalked Protective Topcoat Clear (matte or gloss)

      I always felt PYM was more of a fixative spray because it definitely wasn't thick. It also smells more like a fixative. 😬

    I love this! I use colored pencil on copper but I never thought about trying it on the polymer clay. I buy metal and tools for silversmithing from Rio Grande. They sell a high quality lacquer that I have used on polymer clay and it doesn't make it sticky. It's not a spray, it's the kind you brush on. But you can water it down about 50/50 and it makes a nice light coating to protect the surface without being goopy or thick.

    Hi Donna, my DH (darling husband) did the experiment for me in Nov, '21. Says so in my notebook for clay. He tried Duplicolor Gloss which must be US-based as the spelling of colour is incorrect, lol. Also, Mr Hobby Gloss and Matt sprays. All 3 were terrific and none melted the clay. The samples in my book are as perfect as when he did them for me. Hope this helps. I'm happy to email you pics of the cans, if you want xxx

I did the pencil method and sprayed on a very light coat a total of 3 times. Zero problem. Zero effect on the clay... I used Miniwax water based Polycrylic in a clear satin finish and Prismacolor pencils. I hope this helps in some way! Have a great weekend. ❤

    Thanks again for another fantastic and informative video! I have several Inro blanks I was actually hoping to use pencils on but wasn't sure how to seal. I have ONE can of PYM and I will cry when it's gone. The smell reminds me of the ceramic studio (plaster molds) my mom worked at in the 80s. I wanna say what they would spray seal on acrylic painted bisque because not everything was glazed. But definitely not a thick lacquer, but that's based in what remaining childhood decor items I still have in a box somewhere in a closet. 😂

    I _adore_ my CD Luminance pencils - I'd never have dreamt of using them on polymer clay! This is a fabulous technique Donna - thanks for sharing it with us.
    Given the manufacturer has now retired, a gracious thing to do would be to make their formula open access - so as someone else can take up the mantle. I'm in the UK, so wonder if some bright spark here with a chemical bent will take a look at the formula for PYMII and say _"Oh, what you need is anything with XYZ in it..."_
    I shall ask around this week and email you if I get a useful response! 🤗

      I think for some pieces, white would be better when the “canvas” you want is white. I have drawn bird heads on colored clay, blended green background, blue bird head, rather than white. The pencils don’t behave on clay the way they do on paper and if you begin with a colored base, you can deepen and highlight with ease. Good question, Brittany!😊❤️
