    Thank you! It’s tempting to want to upgrade, but in reality, the Mavic Pro is just as good as the day I bought it.

    Such a great idea to take care of the first Mavic pro and never forget how fun to fly this drone is.
    I will keep my Mavic pro for long and it’s still a great investment in my back country camera equipment.

    A great tip I got from Drone Valley is to let your drone no matter what it is to let it aclimate to the temperature differance before putting the battery in it,in some situations its like your glasses condensating when going in and out,that could not be good for electronics Ive even noticed my cheaper drones with barometers acually fly allot more stable when given some time to adjust.

    Thanks. I am still very happy with my Mavic Pro - and use it a lot for my "Golf & Tesla" TH-cam channel. It has survived getting stuck in a tree (requiring an expensive rescue) and a crash that that bent the gimbal mount (which I could bend back in place) so I still no need to replace it. I have not used a landing pad yet, but it is surely needed if you land on a dusty or very dry path (or a beach) as that can kick up a lot of dust that then gets "inhaled" by the cooling ventilation. Lubricating the rubber bands seems to be a useful idea. Had not thought of that before.

  • @glennk682
    @glennk682 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Great tips Russ especially about the gimbal securing bands. Speaking of which... applying the gimbal lock after your flights during pack up and especially remembering to remove it “before” powering up the MP.

    • @WillEDC
      @WillEDC 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glenn K I always do it but my friend doesn’t because he doesn’t “run” with his pack. So far he is ok since 2016.
      I did get the gimbal cover that has a lock built in. I hope it works well because simple is best I think.

    Thanks' for the tip on keeping the rubber mounts in good working order. There's a couple more reasons for using a landing mat/pad. If you're flying from an area with longer grass, it will stop the gimble fouling on take off or landing, and it will give the RTH something different from the surroundings to focus on. I always check my entire drone for insect residue between battery changes, especially the props. Any prop damage means I change props - the full set. Yes, I always carry a spare set for every drone.

    Thanks friend, always good info! Best tip is the pad, use one all the time as that cloud of dust freaks me out... Something that is often overlooked to maintain that great footage considering that dust cloud is to keep the lens and ND filters clean every flight. Good Flying!

    Russ, another area to check and to clean off is the battery terminals as any dust or light moisture can cause them to not charge correctly.

      One of the first quadcopters I built looked like it was dripping from under the motors on its first test flight. The "drips" were actually nuts and bolts falling off. Fortunately I landed before any of the motors came all the way unattached. I made sure to use Locktite after that.

    Just checked my 2 1/2 year old Mavic Pro's screws. They're all still tight. However, in two of the Allen wrench screw holes there's some clear glue or some type of epoxy which I can't dig out. Hmm. They're not backing out but I'll keep an eye on them anyway. I Love this Bird. This thing flies so damned well. Thanks for the Glycerin tip!

  • @alexsemine1

    My personal guess is that this 200 flights-to-change-props suggestion has to do with solar exposure of a key structural component of the drone. It's well known that the plastic degrades under sun light and the whole thing literally rests on the props. So it's probably a good idea to change them as preventive maintenance.

    Learn to hand launch and catch. You never have to think about the area around.
    Probably don’t want to fly around sea water as well.
    I believe the auto discharge set at the correct amount. Should be around 60ish.
    Has anyone actually wore any part of the Mavic yet? If I get 2-3 years out of it, I would be happy with it.
    So far I’m just replacing props as I have damaged some on my projects like carrying a FLIR and iPhone

    Interesting thoughts about DJI's recommended frequency for changing propellers. I have two maintenance schedules for each of my DJI aircraft. There is a 20 flying hour and a 40 flying hour cycle. Every 20 hours the props' are replaced - regardless of the visual condition. The props' just removed are kept for a further 20 hour maintenance period, just in case any of those in current use are damaged. They are then discarded at the next 20 hour maintenance turn around. The 40 hour maintenance cycle is utilised to implement any firmware updates, as well as checking the aircraft closely for loose screws, clogged ventilation areas, etc - basically a double check for anything that may have been overlooked or missed during pre-flight checks.
    The cost of the blades in my country, a little over $40 for 2 pair. The cost of a downed and possibly munted aircraft - priceless; especially for want of not changing a $10 individual prop sooner rather than later. It should be a no brainer!

    AGAIN LOVE YOUR CHANNEL GREAT TIPS!!!
    STILL LOVE MY MAVIC PRO!!!!
    Bought mine used for only 750 with fly more pack and everything else you can imagine.. in perfect condition..
    I find absolutely no need to buy the mavic Pro 2 or the mavic zoom... Just not worth the money for the upgrade in my opinion.
    The mavic pro is still relevant because it's basically 99% of the mavic Platinum which they still sell... Only quieter motors, and different propellers, most of the added couple minutes flight time is from the propellers.... and I guess there was one small upgrade added to the camera CPU that the original mavic Pro also had depending on the date...
    I talked to so knowledgeable people. mine was made ( build on: 30. October 2017 ) so it does have the upgraded camera... Which also fixed that blurry problem people were having with automatic noise reduction..
    Also not to mention I used DJI assistant in the computer to change the premier motors in my mavic Pro ( it goes 46 miles an hour now, decent speed of about 15 and ascending at about 22 miles per hour ) haven't had any issues or problems... but it's not like I beat it up going those speeds continuously like using a racing drone...
    ;)

    As for getting the dust out of the mavic pro..
    And working with electronics fixing them for 30 years..
    I know you're being safe.. but in reality the fan that's in there in the wind that's going through when it's being flown blows far more than the little bulb thing..
    if you want to get any more dust out than that you would need definitely an electronic spray blower..
    Or the small little vacuum blowers like I use.
    no you don't want to use full power but you could definitely use one of those blowers and be just fine..
    Also I don't know if people realize they do spray the inside of the mavic pro with a special water resistant spray.. so the spray can would be just fine..
    You would have to be blowing in there a ridiculous amount of pressure to cause components to fail or come loose..

    Great tips Russ, thanks. Is there a life time counter to see how many flights the drone body has on it? To set up the discharge number of days for the battery, you need to load each battery while the drone is on and connected to the remote, correct? Never going to bother discharging batteries in less it's for long term storage. IE More than a few days. I just threw the towel in from the get go. I prefer to fly. If I get a few less cycles from a lipo oh well. Discharging is over rated. I haven't really noticed a drastic decrease in performance. Running your batteries low seems worse. On an fpv drone battery though. It may be worth it especially to keep the flight time up.

  • @davej318
    @davej318 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Even tho this is 3 yrs old I would add one more. DO NOT store your battery in the drone. This disables the auto discharge function which can end up harming the battery - so I've read. DaveJ

Not so much so now. Several feet off and lands in a different orientation. I have gotten a lot of joy out of it and I am thinking about an Air 2S? Like to stick with DJI. Which one would you choose to replace my Pro with?

    Great video. I am new to the drone world, quick story and question. I recently found mavic pro about 45 feet up in a pine tree at lake tahoe, pretty tricky getting it down. it appears the drone was there at least thru one winter ( battery possibly froze and is swollen). My question, all I have is the drone and I would like to keep it and get the equipment necessary to use it but is the cost to replace items worth it and what would you estimate the cost to be for necessary equipment.

    3.85v per cell in any lipo polymer battery is the ideal store voltage for the batteries..

    Great tips, I'm curious (because I was asked) Is it still a good drone to buy? That is how much longer will DJI make/support the Mavic Pro?

      Oh yes. Even when it gets the "end of life" label, it will still be supported.

    I'm curious about something, I've been told Lithium battery systems for solar and off grid can't that be brought below a certain level of discharge without damage. I'm assuming that there is a similar depth of discharge for our flight batteries though never see it referenced, does the DJI documentation not specify this?

    You don't want to use any type of petroleum oil based liquid. The petroleum swells and decays rubber

    Hey Russ, how about the mavic Air battery? What is your suggestion on how to store them.

      The same! All DJI batteries have the same attributes.

    FYI the glycerin that you put in the description.. ( it's a pack of 3. minimum That's like $22 for something plus shipping if you don't have Amazon prime that you won't even come close to meeting ) it would be cool if it was 1, but that's just wasted money.. )

    I wanted a Mavic Air for a while. But lately I stated to like the original Mavic Pro too. Is it a bad idea to invest in the older version?

      There is a video that Ready Set Drone did about the Mavic Pro vs. the Mavic Air. I've got the Pro. Just got it about the time you posted this comment. And still loving it more daily. The comparison went the way of the Air, but I'm still glad I chose the Pro for a few reasons. Just depends on which features mean more to you. Was a good informative video though.

    You recommend to store the batteries with a level of charge between 20% to 50% But what if I store the batteries with a level of charge less than 20% like 15% 10% or 5%?

    • @51Drones
      @51Drones  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is bad. The actual best is around 50% according to several commenters on this video.

    Hello from 🇺🇸Harrisburg Pennsylvania 🇺🇸 I have both Phantom 4Pro with 5 batteries 🔋 & Mavic Pro with 3 batteries , 🔋 The Mavic Pro I pretty much take everywhere when I’m Jetskiing or riding around on both of my motorcycles 🏍🇺🇸🛵 cause the Mavic pro is small enough to fit inside both of my compartments on my Big Boy Toys ,If I’m not taking my Woman 👩 with me I always take my Phantom 4Pro plus and can put it on my back seat 😎 My question is should I upgrade and get the Mavic Pro 2 with fly more kit $1900.00 or keep what I have ?
