      @smack311magic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@fodolocraigo8426 shoe is definitely better than a single or double deck 6/5. Look at it this way: a $5 betting unit blackjack pays $7.50 per betting unit, $2.50 extra, whereas 6/5 only pays $6, $1 extra. You have to get 2.5 blackjacks at a 6/5 table per every one blackjack at a 3/2 table.
      This doesn't even take into consideration blackjack "even money" insurance in 3+ true counts. You can get "even money" at a 3/2 table to get a net payoff of 1:1. But at a 6/5 table if you get insurance and they have blackjack you get a net of 1:1; push your bet, 2:1 on your insurance. But if they don't have it, you lose your insurance and win 6/5, at $5 betting units you lose ($2.50) and win $6 for a net gain of $4.50 on your $5 betting unit.

    Please make a video on avoiding detection. It's seems pretty obvious to casino staff if we're consistently sitting out several hands throughout a shoe. ( especially at beginning of shoe) And also during team play it seems obvious when the "high roller" partner jumps in and out only playing a few hands. Or always bets big at the end of the shoe. I can't imagine the pit bosses don't notice that.

    If you start with a $20,000 bankroll, playing with $50 chips, and let’s assume your bankroll goes down to $10,000. Should you jeep playing with $50 chips or switch to $25 chips to reduce your risk of ruin ?

    This was super helpful! I'm a profitable card counter, but definitely just recreational, because gambling is illegal in Utah and I have to travel out of state to play. My bank roll is only about $500 each time I go out to play, but if I lose it, it's easy enough to replace before my next trip a few months later.
    I've been worrying a lot lately about my bankroll size because I've seen videos saying that if your bankroll is $10,000, only I can't lose more than $500 at a time. Haha
    You touched on this a little, but given that larger bankrolls accommodate more profitable strategies, do you think it would be more profitable for me to save up and play half as many hands throughout the year, but with double the bankroll each time? Or to keep playing more hands with the smaller bankroll?

    • @Blackjackapprenticeship
      @Blackjackapprenticeship  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    The way you could minimize risk is like what we do in poker. U move down if your roll gets beat up. So if you have 100k and are playing X level but drop 15K you could drop down to the next level where you would have 1% ruin again.

    • @Blackjackapprenticeship
      @Blackjackapprenticeship  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely! I recommend that people re-size their betting if they lose 20% or more of their bankroll. The only downside to this is that you have to win more bets to get back to even when you've downsized your betting.

    Hey Colin I’m loving the videos and I’m working towards the 200 hours you recommend before even stepping foot inside a casino, I’m currently around 40 hours practice, I have been curious about one question, I’m sure you have answered it in one of your videos, but I’ll ask anyways. Let’s say I walk up to the table and the count is -8 but I only start counting then, the count jumps to -4 however I think the count is +4, is the only way to counter this by joining a table as soon as they start a new shoot? Would be awesome if you could give me some insight

    • @Blackjackapprenticeship
      @Blackjackapprenticeship  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You need to wait for a new shoe before counting a table. You don't want to start counting a table mid-shoe. Keep up the good training! It'll pay off.

    ROR is time dependent as well. A 4 hour ROR is different than a 300hr ROR. And those 2D games have a higher variance which requires more capital, all else being equal.

  • @iveyvines3977
    @iveyvines3977 ปีที่แล้ว

    i think a good way to visualize risk of ruin is like this: if you have 1% risk of ruin over the course of a year after .5 = 1 - (.99 ^ n) solving for n years your chances of going broke are a coin flip. its like thinking of the fact that, playing like you are all the time, you have to never go broke ever. so take how long you plan to be playing black jack and put those many years in and play around with risk of ruin until you find a number you feel comfy with and stick with that number. alternatively you could do a booster method, consider that its acceptable to potentially go broke starting out when it wouldnt take a long time to gain back, then switch to a smaller risk of ruin when you have more than you could make back in a reasonable amount of time without counting.

    Recently while down in A.C I was on a 6 deck table with hand shuffle penetration about a deck and a half(dealer would let me get away with 1 deck most the time) tip! Anyway I was up 3k and unfortunately couldn't enjoy the beach cause the weather was horrible and was just killing time before a dinner comp could be used. Figured let me toss 200 bucks on the table and make a bit extra and if I loose it no big deal. 200 bucks lasts under 5 min since I was at a 25 buck min table. I buy in again another 200 and can go on and on. The pit boss laid the bait and since I'd been up for a bit over 24 hrs I fell into tilt and my winnings plus bankroll i had went back to the casino more idioticly then I've ever played before. Dealer just kept beating me by 1 point or pushing. So many 10s coming out,but playing 1 on 1 it can work both ways alot. Ultimately left with 100 bucks and am thinking I still got 5k more to put to work and really am at a crossroads in the best betting incrimints I should be using. Say I play 25 bucks a hand then push it when the count is positive but the same situation happens. Should I just play high limit or grind my money back slowly. Only thing is slowly against the casino bank means a less likely break even or make more money then I had to start out with considering the amount of time it will take to get where I need to. I play 1 on 1 cause I can count easier so,would it be better to be on a 8 deck hand shuffle shoe and what betting incrimints do you suggest to take on the casino to get my money lost back. Thanks this will be really important for my personal finances. I know you shouldn't gamble what you can't afford,but I'm kinda in a spot where I have to unfortunately. Keep making the videos that you are doing. Such a relief to listen to you rather then morgenstern.

    • @Blackjackapprenticeship
      @Blackjackapprenticeship  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't think about "Getting your money back." That's how a gambler thinks. And please don't gamble with money you can't afford to lose. That's really risky behavior that will likely result in losing more.
      Stay away from casinos, work on perfecting your game, and if you can get a perfect game with at least 500 betting units (500x$25=$12,500), then you can consider investing again in card counting.
      That might not be the advise you're looking for, but that's my suggestion. I really hope for the best for you!

European no-hole- card rule is used (or almost similar to that), and rules of dealer hitting on soft 17, splitting only once allowed, double down allowed on any first 2 cards, blackjack pays 3 to 2, no surrender, insurance pays 2 to 1. Penetration is about 90%. You think card counting on this game can be profitable in the long run?

    • @raven7389
      @raven7389 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no difference in how you play (unless you mean back counting or full shoes), only how much you bet. ROR is basically a measure of how protected you are with a given bankroll and bet spread. Let's say you have 20x your max bet ($100) in your pocket. If you had 40x that max bet, you would have less of a chance of losing the entire thing. And of course. Because you would have to only lose $2k in scenario 1, and $4k in scenario 2. It's easier to lose less than more, assuming the same top bet. Make sense?

    • @VG-em1jy
      @VG-em1jy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The difference between the 1% RoR and 5% RoR, assuming the same bankroll, would be the bet spread. A 1-5 spread would have a much lower RoR than say a 1-20 spread.

    Question for Colin: Suppose your bet spread is $10 to $100. Would you reduce your risk of ruin by betting 2 hands of $50 instead of 1 hand of $100 during a high count?

    • @officially8210
      @officially8210 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      When standard deviation is in your favour, the more hands you play, the more likely you are to profit overall. Assuming the count is the same across two hands, it would be safer to play two hands instead of one.

    • @KubisKopp
      @KubisKopp 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Expected Value (EV): The statistical amount that any given time period is worth. Even though results rarely equal a player’s expected value in the short run, the Expected Value is the amount a hand is theoretically “worth.” Given enough time, actual results will inevitably catch up with Expected Value.
      It's from their website, to be more specific, from the Glossary of Blackjack Terms.

    Your channel is making casinos finally come clean that’s why the rules suck so bad exposing them if they’re going to deal a beatable game then deal it correctly and let smart people play. If you decide not to deal a beatable game then shut them all down.

    Can I beat blackjack with the Red 7 count, a decent spread, and no changes to basic strategy except taking insurance when applicable? I just play recreationally and can't do division well in my head.

    • @Blackjackapprenticeship
      @Blackjackapprenticeship  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the rules/deck penetration of the game and what you mean by a "decent spread," but yes, in theory that's doable.

      Thanks - I studied card counting several years ago and am getting back into it now. Also, in an early surrender game facing a dealer Ace, should you surrender your hand or take insurance in cases where the count merits taking insurance? I recently played 3 max bet hands against dealer ace and took insurance instead of surrendering. I lost all 3 hands and my insurance bets.

    IDK when you put it in the example of "You have a ten sided dice... You roll it and if you hit the 1 side you don't want to hit you lose it all" really makes me think.... fuck, I certainly don't wanna take THAT much of a risk.... which I think is the opposite your conclusion at the time lol
    I play poker though so.... That's why I don't fly on airplanes... you have a like 1 in 2million chance of dying or some random high ass number.... And yeah............ I've seen quads over kings full run to a running straight flush so.... no flying for me.

    • @raven7389
      @raven7389 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Back counting is the safest way to do it. You can also jump in and out of the same shoe at any time if the count tanks. Or sit out till shuffle

    • @Blackjackapprenticeship
      @Blackjackapprenticeship  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nah, you can totally do it playing through the shoe. That’s what I do most places. You just need the skills and the bankroll. 😉

    • @SirJoelsuf1
      @SirJoelsuf1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have a low bankroll (anything under $5k) then yeah you need to wong. Or just play basic strategy, hope for a big streak, then leave after losing like two hands in a row after winning four of five. I used to do that when I was learning basic strategy haha. Good way to get comps too. I'd enter a table with $150, play my $15 minimum table for like 10 hands, see where I was at after those 10 hands, ask for a comp, get my food (I would get comped like $15 lol) then leave. Good times. You need iron discipline for that tho.
      But from what I have read, anyone who wants to play through the shoe needs to have at least $5k, and that's if the minimum bet is $10. $10k for $15, probably $30k for $25 minimum. That's assuming its a six deck shoe, dealer hits soft 17, any two cards double, double possible after split, no surrendering.
      It isn't a solid form of income like full time advantage playing is, but it's a good way to have some "safe" fun in a casino where you aren't just giving the house money which is what you do with every other game lol.

    • @raven7389
      @raven7389 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SirJoelsuf1 That depends on how long you plan on playing. For me a 2% ror for 4 hours takes about $1,800k on a $10 table, at a 10-1 spread (minimum you need on 6D). A 100 hours would need a lot more. A lot of those decisions depend on whether you can replenish your bankroll, win or lose. In total though, a $10 base bet with a 10-1 spread, playing full shoes is more like $11k for me, at 2% ror. When I started I had $200 and wouldn't play even 1 negative hand. I flat bet $10 on every positive hand I could. I slowly raised those bets to $40, again always wonging. At that level I was able to pull out $675 one night. When I got home I counted all my money. I had about $4k. $1,100k of that was in the prior 2 sessions. That was 2013. I quit my job and never looked back..
