  • After five episodes dedicated to testing parts from multiple brands focusing on brakes, wheels, suspension, and cockpit components, Brian Cahal runs through the final bike setup he will take racing this year. With no component sponsors this season, Brian is in a unique position as a professional rider to test and evaluate critical parts he will put on his Forbidden Dreadnaught for the EWS race season. With his complete package finalized, it's time to officially Go Racing! Enjoy!

    Sounds like you have a good perspective after the injury. I wasn’t even really interested in the eventual racing aspect of this series, just the bike setup and testing. Loved the unbiased (non sponsored) opinions on all of the different parts and just hearing what you actually liked the most

    First of all, thank you for sharing all your insights. Even though your goal was focusing on racing, you hit the nail with your videos and this might be a platform you can build up on.
    All the best for Trans Madeira, which is the right spot to just ride your bike and have fun.

    Really appreciate the detail you've gone into throughout this series Brian. The unbiased opinion on parts selection is very refreshing.
    Sorry to hear about the concussion and hopefully you can get back to full health and have a good start to next season.
    Also if you can go into detail of what you replace, service, how you go about it and what settings you run for certain conditions while racing that would be something to continue the series with (sus/tyre pressures, checking spoke tension etc).
    Maybe even nutrition.
    Cheers again 👍

    Great video series. Regarding cs lenght I find when moving body weight forward the longer cs lenght doesn’t up weight the back end as much as a short can bike. So it’s more stable that way, the weight distribution change is more subtle so easier to manage 👍
    Agree your call lengths for a size m, 440 max mine is 445 :(
    Sounds like your recovery has been tough, you’ll love Madeira it’s not exhaustingly steep and it’s a beautiful place.👍

    I agree with the longer chainstays. I have a pretty basic giant reign 2019, it was reviewed at the time as a barge, and a plow. That's why I like it, it's super predictable and can go fast with no twitchyness at bike parks.

    Sweet bike. I haven't really ridden a high pivot bike (at least not since some of the early suspension bikes of the early 90's), but I am more inclined to give one a try now.
    I also run the AXS/Shimano combo and agree it works really well. For cranks, I'm running Cane Creek eeWings.
    I also run Maxxis DH casing tires, and now that you mention it, I agree about how they make the bike feel.
    Following Anneke Beerten's concussion journey has been eye opening. Although her injury wasn't bike related, she has been really open about how difficult and frustrating the recovery has been. Apparently, Tawnee Seagrave has been going through a similar recovery, but it was good to see her in a recent Les Gets World Champs video.
    It's been a fun series to watch. I look forward to whatever comes next!

    Hi Brian, superb series! Thank you for taking so much time out to present your experiences, it’s a pretty unique insight. Can you speak to the performance of the frame kinematics under heavy braking? Is it still active or does the bike squat down into its travel and stiffen up some? Thanks!

  • @brokenspokesMTB

    Series is great, keep it up!! Something you could probably do w/ all your test footage you already have, how do you choose a practice track and what you're doing with each run. How do you go about optimizing each variable in general. You touched on it a few times in the individual videos, but a comprehensive 'here's how I test stuff and how you can too' video would be excellent. Good luck on the head stuff! I'm rooting for ya

    I’m a fan of AXS everything but have the same issue with the seat rail clamp. My seat always slides all the way back in the clamp. I thought it was slightly undersized seat rails or being on a shorter reach bike. Interesting to hear you mention that.

  • @TJ-gh6cg
    @TJ-gh6cg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    How does it pump? We have some rooty natural trails with a few flatter sections where you cant really pedal but have to pump the backsides of rollers and roots to keep going. I test rode a Kavenz VHP and I would just always loose my speed on those sections.
    Concussions can be scary. I had one last year where I had bad eye sight for over two weeks afterwards, that sort of stuff really makes you worried. So watch after yourself and take the time it takes to get well.

    • @briancahal
      @briancahal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was surprised how well it pumped. Suspension has a lot of support, I still find I can pump through rock gardens and even get around pump tracks fairly decently.

    Totally get the concussion “funk” you mentioned. I’ve had 4 myself and the 2nd gave me symptoms for 6-8 months after. I think what doctors don’t understand is they don’t know your head as well as you do so in the end just trust yourself. I think stressing over the doctors predictions for how long symptoms were “supposed to last” being wrong made my symptoms last longer.

    Worst part was I wasn’t even riding at the time (actually I was getting ready for a ride when it happened). I just got light headed while brushing my teeth and smacked the back of my head on the bathroom floor.

    I'm thinking of building a Druid but have heard the high pivot makes the bike less playful as the chainstay length increases as you compress through the suspension travel. Do you think that's a problem with this bike, or once you got used to it its just as poppy/playful as others? Other than the comments on the bike being less playful it looks like an amazing trail bike that I can also bring to bike parks. I also run flats so what you mentioned about the pedal kickback sounds great.

    • @briancahal
      @briancahal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think the Druid is plenty playful, And really depends on how you set the bike up. I’ve got my dreadnought set up as a race bike so priorities are different. Hopped on my Druid with an air shock and was laughing at how much pop and energy it carried through the trail. Also you’ll be surprised what you can get away with on that bike, forget it has 130mm of travel sometimes.
