    It really frustrates me that people would be upset/assume that you’re bandwagoning sustainability & LGBTQ+ - these are things that, even if you were jumping on a bandwagon, are good for society and should be celebrated!

    I personally enjoy hearing peoples assumptions about me, because it gives insight into how I come off to other people. From that I can rethink and maybe change how I behave so that I come off like my "correct" self.

    Even if people do become more aware of sustainability because it’s a trend, is that such a terrible thing? The positive changes still make a difference, and the more people who hear about it the better imo.

    • @kb-ih7ni
      @kb-ih7ni 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      MissGrace4 yes! I think the issue is when someone preaches sustainability or LGBTQ+ support without doing anything (social media activism). I don’t think Lucy does that, but some YTers or influencers definitely seem like they do. Spreading awareness is always a plus though, in my opinion.

    • @gothicwitch101
      @gothicwitch101 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There were articles discussing this in regards to the bucket challenge. Yeah, dumb trend, but contributed so much to research. Just don’t be fake about it, I guess.

    • @adeebasiddiqui9438
      @adeebasiddiqui9438 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      People pretending to care about a serious topic just because its a 'trend' could lead to the trivialization of the serious issue because there are people who don't know crap about the topic and could not care less about it that are going on and on about something serious without any research or regard.

    • @adeebasiddiqui9438

    I'm not british but I don't think "upper class" means aristocracy, I think it's a level lower than aristocracy but definitely wealthier than the average middle class, maybe equal to the "bourgeoisie" (tho maybe that term is outdated). like, pretty rich but without a title. also nowadays there are loads of upper class people richer than members of the aristocracy. like a family can still have a title but not have that much money (maybe lost by previous generations). anyway from how you described yourself it definitely sounds like you're from a normal middle class suburban family. glad to see that you have no problem addressing the issue! i feel like the wealthier people are the less they are comfortable talking about money lol

    Honestly I love the way you talk about sustainability. I can tell that your heart is very much in the right place just as many other's are too, but just as them you succeed in some places and in some it's much harder. The sustainable TH-camrs are great role models, but you are just like most people are, normal. Having the right intentions and doing your best, but often struggling and failing. And there is nothing wrong with that. I think its wonderful and adds a great deal to a healthy conversation about sustainability.

    There will always be people who won't like you or like what you do. Don't take anything personally !
    You seem are a very reflective person and I think that's what a lot of people/followers/subscribers like about you. You think about what you do and don't have double standards. You show the idea of living a sustainable life but also show that it is okay to not be 100 percent perfect. You are a human and that's okay. I just think that people forget that people online may not always be the exaggerated personas some people try to be. Some might just be themselves trying to do something they love. And its not like you are pushing your beliefs onto us, you are just chatting to us as if you were one of our friends.

    I have been subscribed to you for about a year and a half and I never doubted your authenticity. I am actually sad that so many people had such negative assumptions about you. Still you managed to answer them with grace, honesty and openness. I really admire that about you. I sometimes don't find your content relevant to me (I don't wear makeup, we seem to have very different tastes in music and right now I am trying to become as zero waste as I can), but that doesn't mean that what you produce is not good enough for me. I'm really surprised by a lot of these negative assumptions! When you said that it's difficult to hear negative criticism form people who *think they know you really well* I feel like that was very important and definitely makes sense to why it's hard to not feel hurt by these comments. Also, I'm happy that you aren't actively trying to ascend to "TH-cam success" because it doesn't always seem authentic and I really watch you for your authenticity.

    thank you for your honesty regarding the whole being posh and rich assumption. people constantly call me “bougie” , “rich” and “spoilt” because I go to nice restaurants and because I went to America recently. It’s interesting to see what people regard as being “bougie” and “rich”. I used to try and justify myself and feel guilty but I have nothing to feel guilty about, I’ve had a middle class upbringing, my parents are both teachers and pay their taxes😂🤷🏽‍♀️! That’s the way it is, that’s my reality.

    Re: the sustainability thing, there are *some people* that expect those that start down the ethically conscious/sustainability path to be perfect human beings *immediately* and don’t recognise that it’s a journey so whenever people announce that they’re eating less meat, trying to become more aware of discriminatory behaviour/language/habits etc etc there is always a small group of people that will overlook this betterment and demand perfection instead. I find it so irksome and I’m only a witness so I feel you, Lucy, especially because you cop it way more than non-influencers! Keep fighting the good fight ❤️

  • @sf7101
    @sf7101 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    A lot of people I'm subscribed to uploaded videos like this lately and I've noticed that literally all of them got assupmtions simliar to yours, so along the lines of 'you grew up rich/had everything handed to you/lived a comfortable and easy life/didn't have to work that hard to do this or that etc'.
    And I find it sad to see that those people assume just because that creator achieved something great, that they must've had it easy to do so..
    Like what's wrong with just being happy for somebody and what they have achieved, why do those people have to question the hard work that goes into achieving what you want no matter where you start.
    And I imagine, that the people who comment that most likely have a similar starting point and try to justify not having achieved that themselves by being envious of other people.
    (sorry English is not my native language)
    I love your videos Lucy!

I think talking about how hard it can be to make ethical decisions while also showcasing the ones that are sustainable lifestyle changes ~for you~ is v helpful and important for your audience! Mean comments can make you feel so horrible inside - I don't make videos, but I know this because after I made a TV appearance once, I read something negative said by a stranger about it on Twitter afterwards. They cut so deep - and I didn't even know this person! Their opinion shouldn't have mattered but it made me feel so bad. I don't know if the solution is to grow a thicker skin or to just try not to read those comments, but for TH-camrs both are difficult routes. I hope you continue to find peace with nasty comments :) xxx

I mean I’m vegan and I think it’s great that you care about at least a few animals but it’s true that we as a society should care about all animals equally :)

Sorry for jumping down your throat, think I’m a bit hormonal 🤦‍♀️ Diets are a complicated thing and if it were as straightforward as just caring about animals then I would stop eating meat like I have done in the past, but unfortunately things are harder for me now - so I do what I know is possible and shop cruelty-free with me cosmetics x

    I don't really understand how you can be against animals being tested for makeup while simultaneously supporting animals being killed and eating them?

    • @TessaAvonlea
      @TessaAvonlea 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Makeup is not necessary and we don't need animal testing to have make up. Good nutrition is necessary. For some people, good nutrition means meat. And animals dying is necessary for meat to exist.
      Also, facilities which undertake animal cosmetic testing are usually much less well regulated and live in much worse conditions than a decent, well regulated uk farm.
      Cosmetic animal testing causes prolonged animal suffering. When an animal is killed for meat, suffering is almost instantaneous.

    An IT Project Manager & a Teacher... that’s a couple of relatively well paid professional people. I mean, you aren’t a trust fund baby & by the standards of Hedge Fund managers & FTSE 100 company directors your parents wouldn’t be considered well off, but just google median salary for IT Project managers, and median salary for a teacher, then compare with median salary for UK workers. By that measure, you do indeed come from wealth...

    • @fat_biker
      @fat_biker 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jessieee_p It is interesting though how subjectively unless our parents travel around by private jet, almost nobody would consider themselves wealthy. Wealth is relative, & even if Lucy had been born in a council house & her parents had been unemployed in between low paid casual jobs, she still would have been wealthy by the standards of those kids collecting bottle caps from stinking landfill sites in Africa to amass enough cash to feed their families...

    • @fat_biker
      @fat_biker 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hiptop41 I got the distinct impression that on the one hand she didn't consider herself to come from a wealthy background, but on the other she also intellectually knew that she was born of two professional parents in archetypal upper middle class dormitory town Tunbridge Wells in Kent, speaks with an RP accent & appears to have survived a 3 year university degree without emerging hugely & unsustainably in debt, and that these two sets of information were in some tension. This is absolutely not a dig at her or you, just an observation for perspective purposes. We don't get to choose the circumstances of our birth.

    I think the lazy assumption probably comes from your 168 hours videos? Obviously you're going to pick weeks where you're doing fun looking things and of course that will never look like work (even though it might be). Also I think you don't show the work-side of your weeks simply because it isn't as entertaining. Just because we don't see you doing the work, doesn't mean you don't do it.

    I feel like receiving unfair/rude/judgy criticism online isn't really a gendered thing.

    • @duck6100
      @duck6100 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yeah I agree. I understand that different genders may face different types of criticism more frequently but I think it's weird to assume that women have a harder time on the platform. Although, saying that, I don't know anyone that's on TH-cam personally and Lucy seems to know a lot of people, so what she's saying may be true. It's kinda difficult because I think multiple factors probably go into the amount of hate you get, gender and race for sure but also the type of content you make and your outward appearance. So it's wrong to say women always have it worse but it's likely that they get more of one specific type of hate than men (slut shaming maybe)

    • @rosiehampton
