For those who've seen this show... "I promise I won't break a thing." "Don't promise. You never know." ... Do you think Stew and Heidi were implying her heart? Fuck, I love this show.

My favorite line from the NYT Review:
“Whatever you do, don’t call Passing Strange a musical, because that will alienate the people who will love it the most.”

This is probably the greatest 8 minutes in Broadway musical history. In one scene we go from quiet a ballad to a rousing anthem, with Stew the narrator holding it all together. These are some of the most talented performers you will ever see. After watching the amazing Tick, Tick…Boom! I wanted to see if Passing Strange still holds up after all of these years, and if anything it is even more amazing now. Jonathan Larson who wrote Rent, and Stew who wrote and performed in this show, are two of the greatest musical creators we have ever seen.

I am soooo envious of the people that got to see this remarkable play live. I saw it on PBS and was instantly blown away. I know so few people will ever know of it because it wasnt a huge Broadway hit which is a tremendous shame. I keep hoping they will make it into a movie but probably wont happen :-(

I got to play guitar in a production of this show in Dallas in 2016, a month after my mother died. It helped me through the time, and also changed the way I look at theater in general. This is the best show I've ever seen.

Her accents are spot-on. In this clip she's playing a White European visual artist living in Amsterdam. In another scene she's a White German "pornographer" living in a house of artistic anarchists in Berlin; her art exposes the "economic pornography" practiced by capitalist businessmen. I H O W L E D when I heard her say that. She's "passing strange," too, like the Black guy lead, who's passing as a Black stereotype. I love this play, have the DVD, and know it by heart. It's brilliant. No art has affected me like this play has. I am a changed man for it.

It makes me weep with joy that this show exists. I saw this the night after it officially opened on Broadway, having no idea what it was about. This sequence - Keys/It's Alright - just blew me away. The energy that spread through the audience was euphoric. It's now years later and thank god Spike Lee put it on film. I still come back to it. To give myself a lift, and to remind myself that there are artists out there who have stories to tell and that music can lift the spirit and pierce the heart.

Stew when did you read my journal? The musical theatre has so much to gain from you, just don't do the Jon Larson (RIP) thing man we need your talent. Your lyrics and mood have helped me to find the crack of light that is always there in the dark. I owe part of being alive to you. Thank you so very much! Who would have thought successful, community theatre on Broadway.

This is an excellent document in its own right by Spike Lee. And you do have an amazing cast, as the man said we play our songs in people right around inside of them, just ask the song, Daniel breaker, colman Domingo, D’Andra Aziza , Eisa Davis - daughter of Angela Davis - But the person you have to think for this is Bill Bragin Of Joe’s pub, part of public theater of New York the Joe been Joseph Papp of course who said to stew that the funny stories and asides between the songs were better than the songs themselves, although Hilton Als Dad picked the album as his favorite of the year, and said that like he had done -where THEY had done -He never would’ve done any of this without having met Heidi- With this so-called drug suite -Including Arlington Hill which makes the final cut here on Broadway - if you stretch out that story in advance of your life you will be a Broadway star. And he walked him over to meet George see Wolfe and five years later now 15 years later here we are!
