The Dance of Maya -- Orchestral and Metal in 4:4

  • So, for years, I have been mildly obsessed with this piece. It's got a thing that most other musics do not have: A mathematical/geometric bent that is non-musical in a very musical way. Schoenberg has this bent as well (the resolution of the quartal chord that starts the Chamber Symphony No. 1, and the resolution of the chromatic-motion chords at 6 bars before rehearsal mark 7 in the Gurre-lieder).
I have another video on YT that shows in excruciating detail how to play it, and therefore it must be mentioned that there is a thing called the "Maya Chord", which can be thought of in two ways. To 'notate' it, you 'could' use a "Major 7, sharpll' chord symbol, but it wouldn't even remotely denote the function (let alone the sound, which lacks a major 3rd).
The Maya Chord is a double appoggiatura, a three-note chord where the outer notes (the upper and lower) move chromatically in contrary motion 'inward' as the middle note stays stationary.
    The Major 7 sharp11 turns into a Dom 7 (without the 5th) spelled 1, 7, 3 (a Maya chord on G# would have a G natural and a D above it, resolving to an A with a G natural and a C# above it. That's the basic gist.
ALL THAT SAID (by way of introduction), I decided it needed to be orchestrated. So a few years ago, I orchestrated the introduction using Sibelius and NotePerformer sounds. I partitioned it out into 3 statements of 1 woodwinds, 2 strings, and then the 3rd in the brass, with a strings melody (which is Green Dolphin Street, if you didn't know already. I didn't until a few years ago. Cute, John. Cute!)
That arrangement has been sitting around for a few years doing nothing (except I did add it to the actual recorded performance by way of replacing THAT intro, so the orchestral intro leads directly into the solo section. It works pretty well) but today, unrelated, I figured I would see what would happen if it was performed in 4/4, so I plugged into Logic Pro X and used the metal 'Drummer' named Anders. Apple's 'Drummer' is a godsend. Its AI so it's not just by rote, and so many neat things that I wouldn't have thought of programming are done by a real musician (I know one of the musicians who recorded for this project and if he's a good example of the level of musicianship used for these, they're all A-list professionals)
The intro is only a few minutes long, so I took the 'metal' result (distorted guitar and distorted bass, regular bass, 'subby' bass synth, Velvet™ Electric Piano - heavily flanged - and the drums) and took it into Audacity™ and repeated it until it took up 10 minutes (I like to listen to things on infinite repeat). Then I pasted the orchestral into onto the front and now it's a 13 minute fake Maya that sounds good to me.
Oh yeah, then I set my phone on a tripod and caught some light drizzle in my backyard for video content. You can see reflections in the glass of me, my wife, and my daughter moseying about prepping our take-out dinner.
Funny thing: you can't use a pound symbol in front of a chord symbol number 'cause YT now thinks they're fucking hashtags. So lame.
