Meet Alex the Parrot who was the only non-human animal to have ever asked a question!
Alex was hatched on May 1976 in the UK, just like any other parrot in the city he ended up in a Petshop.
Until Irene Pepperberg bought him when he was 1 year old, no one knew he and Irene’s work would change all the facts we know about birds and their intelligence.
Alex had a vocabulary of 100 words and had an understanding of what he said. He could identify 50 different objects, quantities up to 6, and understood the concept of bigger", "smaller", "same", and “different”. Looking at a mirror, he said "what color", and learned the word "grey" after being told "grey" six times. This made him the first and only non-human animal to have ever asked a question
Alex’s intelligence was on a similar level to dolphins, great apes, and even 5-year-old humans in some respects. He corrected Irene and her assistant when they made mistakes during conversations.
Alex died in September 2007, his last words to scientist Irene Pepperberg were "You be good. I love you."
