    Actually the answer to the question above is probably Damascus - as the 'Abd al-Malik was there when the system was created for him by the Jew Samair in 698. However - it came to Offa from Harun ar-Rashid in Baghdad in 793. Check out youtube "A History of Troy Weight" episode 6 for fuller details. Of course before that sterling weight came from Troy weight - got via Darius but which was in use at Ur before 2,000 BC

    wrong. ottoman empire didnt block any trade from east to west. they took tax from caravans(we still have official tax papers in treasury). author has to do proper research first.

      @@ertumuslu wrong again. Considerable part of silk road was in ottoman lands and they charged tax. We do the same now. It's called *import tax*. Ever heard of it? Didn't know importing meant blocking.
