  • Kevin E. Maloney journeys through his Synclavier Regen preset library, "Escape Artist"
    Kevin has had an illustrious career with Synclavier, designing sounds for Michael Jackson, Mark Knopfler, Kenny Loggins, Randy Newman, Julio Iglesias and many others.
    Kevin selected many of his favorite sounds from this career for this Synclavier Regen library: go-to sounds that he has used in the recording studio and at gigs (yes, he used to gig with a Synclavier Poly Sampling/FM tower rig!). Kevin has also added many new sounds, just for Regen, fully utilizing the new-to-Synclavier features such as the multi-mode filter.

    Thank you, Kevin! Absolutely beautiful timbres!

    Only someone like you could make the Synclavier sing. FM synth programming is difficult, and it is an art in and of itself. Admittedly, I've only had experience with Yamaha 4 and 6 op FM synths, and I found those absolute beasts to tame. I can't even imagine what a Synclavier is like to program.
    You're got an incredible touch with these machines, and I am in awe. It's also fantastic to finally get to "meet" the person behind all those iconic sounds on so many albums from the 80s. So glad I stumbled upon your channel.
    All the best.

    Hi, just to share an idea. Very obnvious but... Using the additive generator, an intersting thing to try and to train a bit on that type of soud design, is to replicate the harmonics (fund+ 8) of a hammond organ, replicating a string synth will be much easyer regarding harmonics settings (octaved squares, cheq a roland rs09's manual, that might be interesting), but in this case you might want to find a nice "string ensemble" setting that will work... Such a great unit for those kind of operations...

    Hi Kevin. Very tasteful sounds.
    I shall be attending Synthfest in the UK this year where I hope to demo Regen. I have a particular interest in the FM/additive capabilities of the original Synclavier II. May I ask for your view on Regen's ability to reproduce/emulate the specific tonal character of that instrument? I can't imagine anyone better placed to make that judgement! Thanks in advance.

    • @kevine.maloney2325
      @kevine.maloney2325  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yes it does! It’s the same digital code ported over from the original Synclavier and not an “emulation”. You can even set the bit rate to match the 8-bit original hardware as well as down to 2-bit grit or 12-bit smooth. I think I need to do a A/B comparison to my Synclavier. My A/B with 16-bit samples proved no one could tell!

    Use the B52 Bomber buttons, bring back the big dial, change the display from a iphone4 and make it 19" rack mount

    Does those sample are vintage 50 khz 16 bit from the original unit ? Who record those acoustic sound ? On E mu sampler some came from Joe Zawinul . Can i put my own 24 bit 96 khz personal sample record on this ? I work a lot with Reason studio and a bit of my nord keyboard and Arturia VST. I planned to get an hardware Regen to spice up some of my live gig, with also real analog synth.

      @kevine.maloney2325  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, the samples are 50k 16bit. Many are from the early Synclavier library and many are my own. You can load your own samples (96k 24bit), patch them across the keyboard, tune and loop them. If they already have looping data from other software, they will loop. Storage is on your own SD cards.

      @@kevine.maloney2325 Thanks Mr Maloney, im glad to heard that this unit work with 96 khz 24 bit, it's a rare feature the last hardware unit doing that was probably from Akai with the Z4 and Z8 series, i thing E-Mu do that to on there last Emulator 4 rack.

    These are great sounds! You're really making the new machine bloom. Can I ask though, the "multi" sample sounds - you're referring to multiple velocity layers right?

    • @kevine.maloney2325
      @kevine.maloney2325  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The “multi-samples” are patch lists of samples assigned to key ranges, tuning and some loops. There are a few multi-velocity levels on multiple Partials as well.

    • @rekindle
      @rekindle 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kevine.maloney2325 - hey thankyou for your reply and explanation. So a piano sound or cello sound in this set... would that be like a multi-sampled piano in say, kontakt? ie: round robin samples when you play one key repeatedly and different samples at different velocities? Or is there a different approach for the regen? Sounds great however you’re doing it.... also, where is this bank of sounds for sale? And you mentioned a demo song I think, is that online?

    • @kevine.maloney2325
      @kevine.maloney2325  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@rekindle Much simpler than a Kontakt library. In my library, the most velocity levels would be 3 with low pass filtering assigned to velocity in the piano or Rhodes. Strings typically have 1 velocity level with a 2nd attack portion and some low pass filtering. Repeated notes would trigger the same samples at the same velocity levels. These libraries are exclusive to the Regen.
      You can and should load your own samples to create your own unique sounds. Combining them with the FM, additive, and subtractive timbres will open up infinite possibilities! It’s possible to trigger 12 “tracks” of 12 Partials each with each key played.

      @@kevine.maloney2325 - hey Kevin, thank you for your detailed response. I've been very keen on getting a Regen for the "classic" Synclavier sounds that only it can do, so I hadn't thought of it as potentially being a go-to machine for acoustic pianos, string samples etc - wasn't sure if maybe part of the potential of the Regen was to replace other sample libraries on Kontakt etc ..... after your explanation it seems to me to be a more stylised approach - maybe like a mellotron kind of sampling... and a mellotron piano can often be better for a certain song than a full multi sample "realistic" piano library in Kontakt ... I imagine the Regen (and your library of sounds) would often be perfect in song contexts too.

    I've been looking to the Waldorf Iridium. But the Regen is a whole different thing and simply sounds 100x better than an Iridium !! What holds me from buying is is a missing DATA WHEEL !! That slider...euh 'swiper'is a huge mistake!

    I want to love this machine but that interface is one of the worst designs I’ve ever seen. Why did they have it make it look like an iPod touch is embedded into it? What an old fashioned design for something so incredibly legendary. Do you find physical interface cumbersome or inconvenient in any way?

      @@WSS_the_OG I don’t own one yet, so you might be right about that assessment. I’m interested in buying one but turned off by the physical interface. I don’t understand the intent behind the unusual squarish footprint.

    • @CmJr328

      @@kevine.maloney2325 yeah but why is it vertical? Most desktop devices have more of a horizontal design. This physical footprint just seems like something I’d get frustrated with. But then again, I haven’t tried one or purchased one yet which is why I’m asking the community for their experience here.
