Fun fact: For this Excursion, 4014’s whistle was replaced with 844s whistle. The reason why is mostly because 4014 owned the same whistle during her freight career, before it was replaced with a stock whistle when she was donated in 1960s. The whistle from 4014 from her freight career was placed on 844 in 2011.
Wow, that engine is generating more smoke that the whole city of Los Angeles. Anyway, I rode on it back when it was in regular service. The pre-Amtrak trains had nice dining cars; they tried to make it like a fancy restaurant (with prices to match.😁) I liked being able to stand and watch everything go by from the back of the train. Amtrak took over passenger service in (I believe) 1964, after which Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, Northern Pacific and the eastern trains only transported freight.
They were nice. It must have been hard for those companies to handle both freight and passengers but they did a good job. There were dining cars with linen tablecloths and napkins and waiters in nice starched white uniforms and good food. If you couldn't afford a room there were cars with just bunk-beds with curtains. There was a dome car on long distance trains and you could watch out the back of the train. A little before my time there was even a barber shop.
Reminds me of a time when America wasn't a joke to the rest of the world. We were more united, honored the flag, understood patriotism, went to college for an education not an opinion and yes...probably had some things to work on socially and economically...but we were moving in the right direction.
