Amazing comeback from Seles in the final set completely switching momentum with pure desire to win a tennis match..also amazing sportmanship from Sabatini, pure class in professional sport!
@Ilya Kuryakin Thanks for the English lesson! However, the fact that Monica has as you said the ugliest playing style in history of the open era and this player is at the same time great is at least contradictory. The"ugliest playing style" means: ugliest groundstrokes, ugliest power, precision, passing shots, winners, angles GS etc. By the way this ugliest playing style everyone everywhere bowed like Martina etc except Evert who never overcame that Monica won in Huston. Even Graf questioned after AO final 1993,admitted that she did not know how to deal with Monica. Isn't necessary to agree but your comment on Monica's playing style is at least inappropriate and completely exaggeraded. Personally i love to the fullest "the ugliest Monica's playing style.END
@Ilya Kuryakin uneasthetic? Try again to find an other word! However something is wrong with you.We do not compare visually the two players and what you write is completely irrelevant to the topic you orginally came up with, that is the way of playing Monica. If that were our issue i would tell you that Sabatini is much more beautiful than Graf and therefore according to your reasoning most popular than Graf, but all these are as i said irrelervant.
@Ilya Kuryakin All the above you say is still irrelevant to our original theme. Thanks so much for posting Cindy! Incredible match and the way Monica roared back in those last four games is just classic Seles! She threw herself at every single shot!
A better quality match than their 1991 semifinal encounter. And as amazingly talented as Sabatini was (her game was gorgeous to watch), this match shows what the difference is between a great player and a champion. While Sabatini took her foot off the pedal a bit in the last 4 games, Seles majorly stepped it up and roared towards the finish line.
@@rolandgreen7484 Sabatini had won 7 of their last 8 meetings . That wimbledon final was Graf's only victory against Sabatini since 1990 and on grass it would be a huge shock if the result was different. You might also want to remember the 1990 US open final where Sabatini outplayed Graf, but I suspect the only thing you listen to is the sound of your own voice.
People saying Gaby was talentless is hilarious! Gaby had a 76% win record in her career. Was in the top 10 best players in the world from 1986 to 1995 (in 1985 she was ranked 12). Gaby was also ranked in the top 5 from 1988 to 1993. Gaby also holds the record for most wins against current or former No.1 players. Gaby defeated steffi, Monica, Martina, Chris and aranxtra. Gaby was won the us open in 1990 def steffi. She also was runner up in the us open in 1988 and was 2 points away from winning Wimbledon serving at 6-5 in the third set in 1991! If Gaby had won Wimbledon she would of been no.1! She also won in Miami in 1989, the Italian open 4 times and 2 Virginia slims Championships (basically the biggest tournament outside the gs) in 1988 and 1994! Gaby also won a silver medal at the summer Olympics and was the first athlete from Argentina to win an Olympic medal!! She also won 27 career titles. I would say I’m terms of players in her era that were better then Gaby from 1985-1996 would be these players; 1. Steffi Graf 2. Monica Seles 3. Martina Navratilova 4. Aranxtra Sanchez Vicario 5. Chris Evert 6. Gabriela Sabatini 7. Conchita Martinez 8. Mary Joe Fernandez 9. Jana Novota 10. Manuela Maleeva Fragneire
The stunning Argentine with the flair like no other....she was almost too nice to be the very best but at her best, she could beat anyone and she did. :) I miss those days.
Thanks for sharing this classic match between Gabby and Monica, we can just imagine how many more grand slam titles she should have had if it weren’t for the stabbing! Stay healthy and blessed.
That 3-4 game to pull even…I mean Seles just was the most fearless and driven competitor ever. Those were four points that no player on earth would have won. For me, she is the greatest player, inch for inch, that ever played in the women’s game.
Who cares that Gabys tactics were atrocious? with a backhand topspin/slice/everything-very-nice like that, winning matches was always secondary. 90s women tennis was the best-est everrrr! RIP Jana! And, MASSIVE THANK YOU CINDY C! Enjoying these vids sooo much. :))
Her tactics weren't atrocious. She didn't have the weapons to punch through seles' game, so had to rely on mixing it up. It worked for her in two Italian open finals and very nearly worked for her here.
This match illustrates the major problem with Gabi's game. She just didn't have the weapons to really take control of points, or win quick points. So much of her game was about inducing errors from her opponent by spoiling their game, and when that wasn't working she couldn't just punch through them like a Graf or Seles could. Obviously, her poor serve was one of the major factors in that.
Sabatini's racket sounds like it's strung at 50 lbs at best! I'm not a professional, but I like my racket strings tight! I was never a real Sabatini fan. But after Parche tried to murder Seles in German, Sabatini was the ONLY player who wanted to freeze Seles' ranking. Always pulled for her after that.
To think this would be her last French Open Championship due to a crazy Steffi Graf fan who got what he wanted in the end. Graf would win 11 of her 22 slams AFTER the Seles stabbing and Monica would never be the same player mentally or physically when she came back in 1995. Thank you Monica for coming back to tennis in 1995. You have shown nothing but grace and kindness when you came back and you will forever be the best female tennis player ever no matter what the record books show. You would have won so much more...
@@craigmills3583 Most likely caused by the lack of support by the WTA, the failure of the German legal system, and her use of food as comfort. For her to come back to win the 1996 Aus Open and have the career that she did is a testament to her mental strength.
Cindy, you don’t happen to have Monica’s fourth round match against Kijimuta in your collection do you? If my memory serves me right Monica was a break down in the final set in that match too, but came back to win it! X
nick fit wrong! steffi in the final was the most difficult opponent of the tournament; their match was voted the best match of the 1992 kraft tour season
I'm curious to see that match. Because Kijimuta was a marginal player at best. I'd be curious to see if she truly was playing that well or if Seles was just playing badly.
@@gk891 I remember watching it at the time and Monica definitely wasn't at her best. She wasn't going for her shots and was rallying more than anything.

Wow 1992 tennis this is truly incredible 😍🎾
Monica Seles! The definition of aggressive tennis.I love her
Wonderful win for Seles! I love both Seles and Gabby! I love the bond these two have as well! Two wonderful stars of the game!
no fear ever - thats why i loved monica seles so much - plus, her groundstrokes were out of this world - also, she is a very nice person too
So true..
Después de años repasar este partido. Qué tennis aquel...gracias Gaby por aquellas grandes batallas en los Courts.
Great match i don't have words
For Monika simply the number 1 without other comments
Such an iconic match from the early 90s...just wish the quality was better.
It's impossible not to adore Seles!

100% agree but Sabatini’s serve was more effective on clay. Def a more technical player, but had a beautiful one handed backhand that she could rip.

Obviously. Anyone who disputes that she would have only grown more dominant simply doesn’t understand the trajectory she was on or her brilliance.
monica te extraño!!!!!!
Monica’s intensity is in full display here. After she came back she lacked that urgency to win.
I wouldn't say she lacked the urgency. She had PTSD. She was plagued with self-doubt and fear in the one place (the tennis court) she had grown up in.
Omar Gonzalez as well as an eating disorder. Odds were stacked against her unfortunately
no she didnt lack the urgency ... she was a different ... she had a knife in her back for chris sake! geez ... show some sympathy
