Located in Mayrhofen is Austria’s steepest pisted ski run, Harakiri. The ski run has an inclination of 78%.
The run was filmed with two Gopro hero 7 black cameras at 4k in January 2020.
The run is north facing so regularly in the shade, with usually pretty hard packed snow. If you fall at the top there is a strong likelihood that you will end up at the bottom.

Can tell it’s steep by the number of turns vs the relative speed. He’s putting in a lot of turns to control his acceleration. Must be a damn hard work out on the quads!

hes not fully finishing his turns which is also making him make more turns to controll speed. But this piste is steep dont get me wrong.

Funny memories: I went down this slope twice in 2017. It was very icy, and sharp edges were a must :) Many people seemed to struggle there, and it was great fun to watch the spectacle on the way up. However, the third time I hit this slope, I was taking a short break on the very left just before the steepest section, and all of a sudden I was knocked down by a skier who fell right above me. We slid down to the bottom of the slope as one huge snowball :D No injuries, just skis and poles all over. Fun to watch for the people on the lift for sure ;) And yes, the slope is *way* steeper than it looks on the video.

Alright, American chime in here. :) first, I would love to ski this one day myself. I know wide angle makes it look flatter than it actually is. But it really doesn’t look that steep. 78% means 35 degree. In North America, 35 degree slope would qualify as a double black trails but this is a groomer which will bump it back to black, or red in Europe system. The harder double black in North America often has 40+ degree slope with moguls, cliffs or trees. It is hard for me to believe that this is the steepest for Austria. Maybe this is steepest excluding off piste?

After years of working and skiing at Tahoe resorts and skiing in the Dolomites and the Val D'Aosta Alps, I have to say, I just don't find European expert terrain nearly as difficult. I know people take yt comments super seriously, but if you've ever skied there, you know Kirkwood's Wall, chutes, and cliffs just hit different. Watching this video - and this is another thing I noticed in Italy - I think it's crazy that Europeans tend to favor piste skiing instead of heading off into the trees. There's no denying it's magical to ski in Europe, though. We were working on a trip to Hokkaido for this winter, but it looks like Japan has shut things down again. Our Epic passes work at Skirama Dolomiti. If anyone has any experience there and knows where the toughest terrain is, please share.

I've tried this fabled harakiri and to be honest I was disappointed, I feel like the most "troublesome" feature was the fact that it was very poorly tended to, had it been more compressed, it would've been an absolute carving joyride, whereas in the conditions I have encountered, I had to go for a more mogul-like turning style (still very fun but just a bit underwhelming compared to what I've heard about THE harakiri)

About a 38 degree slope. Steep for sure but not too crazy. Still, if it's icy it could be tricky. Howelsen Hill, the local hill in Steamboat Springs, CO, is 37 degrees. The winter sports club kids ski race down it for training. A slope really gets steep when you can stick your arm out at a 90 degree angle and hit the snow with your hand.

@Peter hunt I think the Harakiri is steeper, but its no way near as daunting. I spoke to a few people in the resort and Harakiri is pretty much always icy with no moguls. I think it's so steep at that first section and because it's north facing so always icy, I don't think fresh snow settles. The tunnel is a much harder run in my opinion.

How in the world is that run even have a name, i see super beginners on it. It can't be hard, your turns we're to basically check your speed from any possible surprises ahead instead of whats at hand, from what i could see, but your a good skiiersand your skis are quite fast

.... We have a ski run similar to this in Denmark; near our highest moutain [more than 170 meters high!]. Just like on this video its hard to do it justice on camera, but its Brutal and you sometimes reach in excess of 2kph - the years that there is snow on the hill. I wouldnt advise foreigners to try! Many get hurt at the hotel buffet'!

I tried once by snowboard. What it makes difficult is the surface of the track: it was icy as hell. I could make it only on my ass down :D

I really hope the steepest run in Austria isn't only 38 degrees. Is it steep, yeah. But is it crazy steep compared to other places, absolutely not. I measured a few runs at Mt. Bohemia in Michigan at 40-45 degrees (84-100% grade) with a gradient measurement tool.

Isn’t 78% the average gradient? I.e. it’s steeper in certain places? Fabulously skied though, fair play.

I'm surprised that 78% (38 degree) is the steepest slope in Austria?
I have been skiing at Väggen at Hundfjället, Sälen in Sweden whisch has a 100% (45 degree) gradient. It has often been used for speedskiing compentions besause it's just staight dowwn the mountian with zero turns and flattens out at the bottom so you can stop again after going almost 200 km/h. It's the fastest slope in Sweden with a record of 198 km/h.
Chocken at Idre Fjäll in Sweden is even steeper than Väggen at 107 % (47 degrees), the steepest slope in the Nordic countires. This is well suited for speedsking as it's also just straight down the mountian and looks very similar to Väggen. The record at Chocken is180,53 km/h, so a bit slower than Väggen.
I thought there would be at least some runs just as steep as these in Austria, but I guess not?

The video made it look less step, but comparing that to Squaw Valleys Iron Maiden Chair or KT22, not really the same. Geotropism, and Phototropism, slopes so steep I can touch the slope above my head, and the trees are shaped like Capital Letter “L’s”, growing out of the slope towards the sun...in other words, you can’t fall 😬

In the video it seems steep but in reality I bet that’s waaay steeper 😱
