In fact, the grandest single Viking grave ever found belonged not to a man, but to two women-one about 75 years of age, the other around 50-who were buried in a funerary longship on the Oseberg farm near Tønsberg, Norway. Their burial was one of history's most exciting Viking-era discoveries. Could one of these women be the Shieldmaiden Lagertha.
@drend Putting stuff into a grave doesn't make anyone anything. Much more interesting is that she didn't wear typical cloths for that area but cloths from the eastern steppes.
But you got to remember they were not her pets she put them there as an obstacle. Probably thinking if he can slay a bear and a hound he can have her. I'm sure if she was close to these animals she wouldn't want to be with him or put them out there to possibly die at the hands of him. It was a test of strength and skill because she would not be with a lesser man being the shield maiden that she was.

I find it interesting that the original Saxons, Jutes, and Angles were originally from areas that were in and around Denmark. So in essence the original saxons who went to Britain in the late 400s and 500s were actually proto Scandinavians. So later in the Viking age the Saxons vs Vikings were actually somewhat removed cousins fighting each other. Vikings initially had the upper hand because the proto Scandinavian Saxons, Jutes, and Angles became less warlike because the land of Britain was fertile and life was better there and they became more sedentary and civilized and there was plenty enough to go around that they didn’t have to raid each other. It is quite interesting when you look at Norway and Denmark today. They are arguably one of the most humane, happy, and civilized people on earth today. They have the best run governments, the highest quality of life, and the least inequality as well as the best standard of living anywhere on earth. They also have the least corrupt governments. And to think back in the 800s they were the most savage and uncivilized people in Europe. Proof that harsh living conditions make a harsh people which I guess explains the Russians today.

Yes, great history indeed. However, I'm pretty sure Valhalla was only open to men who died in battle. No one else could get in - not women, not kids, not men who died by causes other than war. It's one of the reasons Christianity took hold so quickly. Christian afterlife was open to everyone. And poor people had a better chance of getting into heaven than the wealthy warriors who stole loot. Just sharing...!

It's funny because I've never had any interest at all in Scandinavia, though I've been there twice, until Netflix came out with these shows and out of boredom I thought I'd try just one episode of one show. her being a woman the sources would never say much about her since they concentrated on the men. If you visit St Paul Cathedral in London for instance you can see that Elisabeth I tomb is in a small corner of the church almost out of sight while the kings tombs are central and in evidence and she was one of the greatest monarchs England has ever had and that was many centuries after the so called viking age.

She's a myth. A very cool myth but most definitely not a real person. Most of ragnar is myth mixed with a couple of different rangnars from both history and myth. I think its very important that videos like this explain this and not lead people to believe they are true historical characters. Maybe 20% of the Vikings tv series is historical truth st most. The other 80% is pure fantasy. All really cool fun but not real. Even from reading the comments here, people believe these people to be real life people from history.
@Christine Hunt odd. I've replied to this but it's disappeared. Saxo Grammaticus's records of old oral stories and myth is the only real source. She's a mention in his mythos of Ragnar lothbrok. Sagas etc, whilst they contain "some" historical information are mostly fantasy filled with magic and dragons and impossible feats and so on. There's many scholarly writing's and interpretations on what is contained in these stories and it's best that people read on these than rely on TH-cam videos as much as the comment sections. 👍
The Gesta Danorum or as its also called Historia Danica isnt really a source that can be trusted word by word. Saxo Grammaticus writes about times and people more than ages ago and mixed it with myths and belives of the time. Lagertha is as real as Odysseus, amazons valkyries or unicorns.
@@PozoBlue No Ragnar is mentioned in different other sources. In the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for example or In frankish sources he is mentioned by name as "Reginheri". Lagertha is not as far as i know.

I need to read this source. The "Amazons" were Scythian women who were allowed to be warriors and could shoot a bow backward on horseback. The way the narrator calls them "barbarians" could be a clue that either Lagertha was of a Scythian lineage or else strongly resembled a Scythian.

There must have been countless warrior women their names lost to time as DNA evidence from the early Viking period attests. There were many cultures in which women warriors were prevalent. It was thought Greek tales of the Amazons were legends however recently several graves of Scythian women warriors have been uncovered. her being a woman the sources would never say much about her since they concentrated on the men. If you visit St Paul Cathedral in London for instance you can see that Elisabeth I tomb is in a small corner of the church almost out of sight while the kings tombs are central and in evidence and she was one of the greatest monarchs England has ever had and that was many centuries after the so called viking age.

She's a myth. A very cool myth but most definitely not a real person. Most of ragnar is myth mixed with a couple of different rangnars from both history and myth. I think its very important that videos like this explain this and not lead people to believe they are true historical characters.
Maybe 20% of the Vikings tv series is historical truth st most. The other 80% is pure fantasy.

Saxo Grammaticus's records of old oral stories and myth is the only real source. She's a mention in his mythos of Ragnar lothbrok.
Sagas etc, whilst they contain "some" historical information are mostly fantasy filled with magic and dragons and impossible feats and so on. There's many scholarly writing's and interpretations on what is contained in these stories and it's best that people read on these than rely on TH-cam videos as much as the comment sections. 👍
The Gesta Danorum or as its also called Historia Danica isnt really a source that can be trusted word by word. Saxo Grammaticus writes about times and people more than ages ago and mixed it with myths and belives of the time. Lagertha is as real as Odysseus, amazons valkyries or unicorns.

There must have been countless warrior women their names lost to time as DNA evidence from the early Viking period attests. There were many cultures in which women warriors were prevalent.
