    My very first watch of any kind. I walked into a pawn shop and there it was. I had to have it, and I knew nothing about it. I now have a small collection which I treasure, but this will always be my favorite. I loved it before discovering the historical significance of the design, so I am not put off by the lack of a sub dial. The three central hands make a very clean and simple face. If I was looking for this watch because of it's history, I would want the sub dials, but it is not less of a watch without them in my opinion. I still love telling people about the marine chronometer connection.
    Size is not an issue on my narrow wrist. I buckle it on the second hole, and it is slightly loose, but it looks great because the lugs are so small. You get a huge amount of dial real estate without feeling it is too big or too thick.
    I also love that the movement and hands are so precise. It is easy to accurately set and keep time. Nothing to dislike on this watch for me.

    Lovely video, thanks! My first Swiss was a Swatch way back in the 80s. Kept it around for decades after the strap broke, always looking for a replacement strap, but could never find an original. Finally the crystal shattered after a house move and even then I hung on to it. After another move or two, I noticed the hands had been bent some how. Only then I threw it away.

    • @halfpastblog
      @halfpastblog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great story! Although many friends in high school had a Swatch I never did. More of a Casio guy back then but I admired the Swatches. I bet today you'd have no problem finding a strap.

      @@halfpastblog Thanks. Yeah nowadays it would be easy to find a strap, but back then the economy in this country was very closed, so it was all but impossible. I was one of the few who had a Swatch back then here as I picked it up on a vacation in the US.

    I really love more vintage watch styles that aren't just "plain" dress watches or blocky divers - so the Marine Chronometer has been on my radar for a while. I recently got the chronograph version of the same watch as the two sub-dial setup is IMHO closer to the look of historical marine chronometers. I really like how Hamilton went to the lengths of designing the case to be reminiscent of the historical instruments as well as the dial - which is something no one else has done.
    Its mostly personal preference, but given that a sub seconds register was one of their defining historical characteristics, Marine Chronometer style watches without a sub-dial look a bit off to me.
    Ideally it would have been nice to have the top register as a power reserve rather than a chronograph minutes tracker but as far as I am aware, only Ulysse Nardin makes Marine Chronos with a power reserve and those are now going for more than what I am willing to pay for any single watch. There's also a Glashutte Original Senator model, that isn't technically a Marine Chronometer homage/style watch, which has pretty much bang on the exact same functionality and dial in the style of a historical marine chronometer, but that's a solid gold model and I would have to sell of my entire watch collection to even afford it second hand...

      The chronograph version is probably the best looking version of the bunch. You did well.

    Im considering this watch right now... well the 40mm small second hand but I really want this one at 43mm. Its amazing how hard it is to find a white or silver dial watch in 40-45mm, auto with heat treated blue hands under $1,000-1,200. im 6'3" 210lbs so im worried the 40mm is going to look too small.

    • @halfpastblog
      @halfpastblog  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hopefully this video was helpful. I actually love 40mm watches on my 8.5' wrist. But it all depends on the watch and your personal preference. I will say both wear large because they are all dial. The 43 Hamilton wears much large than a 43 Diver would, for example. My complaint about the 40 is the miniature 3.

    This is my first Swiss watch too, needless to say your IG photos and some others were the hard sell. I personally love this watch, besides being a watch collector I also have about 8 clocks in my house, and all the “dead space” on this beauty really reminds me of a clock more than a watch. A primary reason why I love it vs the 40mm. It wears a bit large on my little wrist but this watch always gets attention. Great overview Alton! I saw you brought the gloves out! LOL
