How do you do laundry on a boat? That is something that we are asked often, and it's a great question. With limited power, space, and water...laundry on a boat can be challenging. Our method has evolved over time, and we'd like to share with you how we do laundry aboard our cruising sailboat.

You managed to make one the more mundane tasks very interesting. I knew you had a washer but didn't really know the details. What I've always appreciated about sailing are the pragmatic ways in which the things we take for granted on land are carried out over water. Excellent idea, we added a front load washer similar to yours while refitting our 45ft steel yacht. Plumbing was no big deal, just had to mount it on a properly reinforced base to allow for the weight and inertia of rough weather and ensure good anchors and tie backs. Only use it in calm anchorages of course and hang the clothes in the dodger mostly. Next to a new Wallas Diesel stove and oven and the new engine this has us smiling every time we use it. " Happy Wife, Happy Life"

YEA I have been waiting for this for seems like forever I got the Omni Oven the last time.I just bought a Tayana 47 and it came with a Edge star washer/dryer combo and like you never use the dryer but I like the idea of your drying in the salon so I guess its time to get me some indoor clothes lines like you have. One more thing do you have any videos on boat organizing tricks and ideas?

I use a Drumi washer. Man powered. Dry through dehumidifier. Like the one you have. Works fine on my Kaskelot, 34 feet Danish design doubleender.

Some of our sister ship Westsail 42s/43s have big berth cabins up forward. But on Paragon we use the bow section for the washer, shower, head, and lots of storage.

I think, my Grandma's old house (now my uncle's "camp") still has a plunger like device made for washing clothes in a "zinc", wash tub, or bucket. Once modern convenience came in use, it got used for holding toilet paper rolls.
Gran always called a sink "The Zinc" because the first kitchen sink she had was galvanized, had a washboard built in, and the hand pump for water was right there in the house! (hot water required the stove and a pot)
As soon as you mentioned laundry, I wondered if you had ever used one of the Wonder wash things. Yes, yes you did! (~_^)

Hi Luis, Thanks, The dehumidifier requires between 420 - 670 watts, so we can only run it when we're hooked up to shore power. Likewise, the vast majority of the time we only use washer when we are on shore power. If I had to wash clothes on the boat while not being hooked up to shore power then I would use a Wonder Wash and hang the clothes outside on the lifelines.
We used a WonderWash (WW) onboard for several years, and agree with you that they worked great... a couple of tricks we tried (more or less consistently):
For most laundry, some 'ionizing laundry balls' (never learned which make) in the mix let us launder without detergent. Though their benefits have been challenged, they seemed to do a decent job. For heavy, greased laundry, we'd spot clean by hand with Fels-Naptha laundry soap which DEFINITELY works on most anything. Soap and balls stow in the WW between wash days.
A hand wringer is fairly compact, gets more water out of clothes than can be got by hand and is easier on fabric than twist wringing. Ours stowed in the WW. If adjustable, can make tortillas between Sil-Pat or thin plastic cutting board sheets (kinda overkill, though).
We got rid of the bulky frame and handle, and towed the loaded WW or let it trail in a turbulent section of a stream (lazy method). Definitely lose heat faster, but seemed to suffice, and all the agitation is handled by bouncing around. You can fit a custom netting to secure the WW for towing or use a net bag. If you want to prolong heat, hook it to a bungee from boom and bounce it around to agitate (good excersize).
If you do laundry every other week, you can modify the lid and use the WW as a wine fermenter... give it another hat to wear to help justify its storage. 😏

Thank Andy. I pretty much never use the dryer. I think the dehumidifier does a better job of drying the clothes because they end up being less wrinkled after hang drying. Plus I almost always do a few loads of laundry at a time, so it's much more convenient to hang them all up at once.
@@drakeParagon Itmwill be interesting to see if Mads uses his given he has a separate washer dryer. I guess he will need to sort his solar and a few other niggles before he can be fully functional. A
I knew a guy that would put his dirty clothes in a netbag and drag the bag behind the boat for several hours to wash he claimed it really got his whites clean.
I think the salt that would be left in the clothes would be awful for skin.
what your electric system looks like so you can handle 4 loads of wash and overnight dehumidifier?
one more thing what type is your fresh water pump so can handle the washing machine?
We have 4, 8D, and 4, group 31 Lifeline batteries for a total of 1520 amp hours + 15, 130 watt solar panels (1950 watts total) + a 400 watt wind generator. However, the dehumidifier requires between 420 - 670 watts, so we only run it when we're hooked up to shore power. Likewise, the vast majority of the time we only use the washer when we are on shore power. If I had to wash clothes on the boat while not being hooked up to shore power then I would use a Wonder Wash and hang the clothes outside on the lifelines. For the fresh water pump we just have one of the cheaper model Shurflo marine pumps. It works fine for the washing machine, and for all of our faucets. But does overheat when we fill up our bathtub after it runs for maybe 15 minutes constant. Luckily, when it overheats it just turns itself off. And then it works fine again after it cools down.
Very interesting. But what did that wonderful electric washer cost installed? Has it paid for itself yet?
in my area the splendide washer was about $800 10 years ago, i think the new ones are about the same price.
Hey k, I was just looking at pricing on the latest Splendide washing machines and they seem to average around $1200 depending on where it is purchased. The average cost to do a load of laundry (wash/dry) at a marina/laundrette is about $8 ish. Assuming we do one load of laundry a week then this washing machine paid for itself after about 2.5 years. Of course, we do more than one load of laundry a week which brings that number *way* down. I would say it is definitely worth the cost...at least for us. -M

I didn't get it when you said that the drying process consumes 2,5galons of water to dry the clothes.....
Yes, it seems counterintuitive, but it's true. The Splendide ventless combo washer/dryer can dry a load of laundry using a technology that actually requires 2.5 gallons of water to dry the clothes. All ventless dryers require water to dry the clothes.
