      I guess it's because you and me, deep inside, already knows that it will be a successfull job... no tension in watching some one else working and maybe it's also because we enjoy only the good side of this work....

    Wow, concrete without sweating and watching metals chips fly, both in the same day....I didn't know that retirement was going to be this much fun.
    Thanks for the videos!

    I am not even a machinist but my mum worked in a machine shop on a press drill cutting threads on tiny fasteners for British aerospace and Boeing. I loved that place. the noise from the lathes and the smell of the machines. dude you are one of the lucky people that loves his craft and, obviously is shit hot good at it. if I get a chance to visit florid a the next time I'm over, I'm gonna try visit your shop.

    That's a work of art Adam. I love the radius you put on some work. That old shaft was trashed! Great work. No apologies needed if you don't tape everything, we know you're busy. We enjoy what we get to see.

    The amount of metal removal on this is kind of mind blowing to me. Not that it's a surprise; just that I haven't really thought about where massive shafts like this come from. Thanks for sharing!

    Tip from a 30 plus year lathe man: put polishing paper under soft jaws with backside of paper on job finish, keeps the copper off your bearing fits and looks nicer for the inspector.

    That's a beautiful piece of work!
    Everything you do could easily be in a museum and not look the least little bit out of place!
    I once helped a stepson with some plumbing in a small commercial kitchen and I'd made a mistake by one pipe size but the inspector said appearance was also important and, since it was so neatly done and looked good, he passed it. :)

    The material that you present on this channel is an education in itself! the techniques used in metal work are being lost on the next generations because of "educators'" decisions to eradicate them from the curriculum. Many of today's students would rather enter a trade than go to college and these programs were traditionally taught to provide a starting point for them. Now, there are fewer options for young students to find an entry path to this type of skill. I hope that you will come out publicly in support of these programs; maybe more kids will benefit from this kind of training. Thank you for your videos, I look forward to seeing them each week.

      Are you from the US or the UK? I'm not sure about American colleges but UK colleges teach BTEC diplomas which are praised for better practical aspects and for getting people into industry. Some colleges also do A Levels which are hard but get you into university quickly. In the UK as well, the representatives of industry go to the board of governors for education and say what they want students to be taught. BTECs are, like I said, known to teach practical skills but A Levels teach you to pass a test, nothing more. I did A Levels myself and I hated it, I'm doing my BTECs for engineering now and I feel I'm learning more there than I was in A Level college. I also feel more respected in BTEC college than A Level college as I felt like I was being treated like a child despite being 17/18 at the time.

    Another beautiful job, Adam. Man, you make that old Pacemaker sing! I've never run a lathe that big in my whole work life. Largest I've worked was a Monarch similar to the one you have in your home shop, and usually smaller ones than that. Now my shop is my retirement income, and I have all what you would call miniature machines, since my contract work is now focused on making tiny parts in short runs. I love my work still, but miss a big lathe sometimes.
    Thanks for showing what you have time to do for us. It's nice that your employer lets you share some of the work in your day job. Really nice workmanship!

    Another beautiful job. And I really like the concrete coming in. Wish I had a shop like that!Now for giggles: The plural/multiple of radius in Latin (as most of our language is based on) is radii. Ray De Eye.

    • @2lefThumbs
      @2lefThumbs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      just for more giggles: radiuses is a valid plural in British or American english (though the romans did pluralise it as radii). My latin teacher would have thrown his chalk or board duster at you for pronouncing radii with a long "i" as the last syllable! - Back in my day (70's) British classical latin teachers insisted all "i" sounds should be short, like the "i" in bit or the "i" in radius (a short "eee" sound), they reserved the "eye" sound for the ae diphthong, like in antennae :)

    when it comes to duplicating a part, how do you determine the precise dimensions when the original is so rusted?

    • @niwanagahide2235
      @niwanagahide2235 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the dimension of the rusted region is not so important.
      the important dimensions were edges and where the keyhole was. They had to tell him the precision of those. the rest as long as its not smaller than what is already there its good.
      the steps are there just to make the shaft lighter also to decrease the stress buildup on diameter shift.
      if those had to be pricise for some reason, then they would have to told him (they either already have the part and give it to him, or give him the dimensions)
      as for actual mechanical way, idk.

    • @mikeb1520
      @mikeb1520 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you know what component goes where, and the application, you can fairly easily determine what the needed tolerances are from the component manufacturers product literature. Motor shafts are typically k5-k6 tolerances for bearings, but gearbox shafts might be m5-n6, or even tighter depending on how much torque is being transmitted. Go to the FAG Bearings website and see if they still have publication WL 00200/5 available for download, they have some examples of various types of equipment and the bearing tolerances needed. Falk Couplings has similar design guides on their website.
